Poll: The Hafeez-Haider question and the spin dilemma – what should Pakistan do against India?

Pakistan played the same batting line-up in both warm-ups, but there is a case for them to look at their bench for the opening encounter

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Oct-2021Pakistan could scarcely have dreaded being handed as tough a start to the T20 World Cup as an opening game against India – given their miserable World Cup head-to-head record – and India’s status as one of the favourites.Additionally, Babar Azam’s side have also shown their hand slightly when it comes to the starting XI for that contest, going with identical batting line-ups in the two warm-up games. On the bright side, that may suggest an element of clear-headed stability when it comes to Pakistan’s gameplan, but defiantly sticking to the same side doesn’t mean there aren’t any concerns worth addressing.Even if they get everything right in terms of selection and preparation, the odds favour their opponents. But in a couple of positions in particular, there’s compelling evidence to suggest Pakistan might benefit from a bit of a reshuffle.Haider, Hafeez and Malik
Two of these three will play against India, and let’s face it, we all know who the other one is. Haider Ali didn’t get a look-in during the warm-ups despite being called up to the side late owing to his form in the National T20 Cup (317 runs at a strike rate of 146.75 at 63.40 runs per innings), Pakistan preferring instead the comfort blanket of Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez. Haider wasn’t born when Malik made his Pakistan debut and six months shy of his third birthday when Hafeez showed up, but at present, makes a compelling case to pip one of them to a starting slot.

Malik was an injury replacement after Sohaib Maqsood had to withdraw, and like Haider, benefitted from an excellent National T20 campaign, though it did follow on from a truly horrific stint in the CPL. All signs point to him starting, but Hafeez’s position should be more precarious. Since April 2021, Hafeez has scored 388 runs in 24 T20 innings at a strike rate of 103.2, and his poor form with the bat continued in the warm-ups, where he followed up a golden duck with a 14-ball 13 in a game that saw 186 chased. Given five of India’s likely top six batters are right-handers, the theoretical advantage his part-time offspin might offer appears diminished, so it is worth considering if those batting numbers merit a start over a more explosive Haider.Nawaz over Shadab?
Again, unlikely, given the rigid, conservative framework to which Pakistan tend to stick to, but that Indian batting line-up arguably makes Nawaz the better match-up. If India do indeed stick to a batting line-up with five right-handers in the top six, Nawaz’s left-arm orthodox turning away from the bat might well match up better than a struggling Shadab Khan’s legspin. Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav have notably worse strike-rates against the former class of bowling, and while Rishabh Pant is more destructive against left-arm spin, his T20I record with India isn’t as impressive as his IPL numbers. Shadab’s economy rate, meanwhile, has trended upwards in recent years; he conceded 7.96 in all T20s since 2019, while Mohammad Nawaz’s economy rate is 7.04

At the National T20 Cup, both were expensive with the ball, though Shadab managed just four wickets to Nawaz’s eight. Both had similar strike rates when batting (just under 145), though Nawaz hit a purple patch – 216 runs at an average of 54, while Shadab managed 94 runs at 23.50. But with Shadab appointed the vice-captain and with vastly greater big-match experience, he’s overwhelmingly likely to get the management’s nod come Sunday evening.

Man Utd ready to join race for "unbelievable" £75m CM amid interest in Bruno

Manchester United are now ready to join the race for an “unbelievable” £75m midfielder amid the interest in Bruno Fernandes and doubts over Casemiro’s future.

Man Utd keen on new midfielder with Casemiro's future up in the air

Casemiro’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, but the Brazilian has remained a key player for Man United, having arguably proven Jamie Carragher wrong since the Sky Sports pundit infamously suggested he needed to “call it a day.”

The 33-year-old has made seven Premier League appearances this season, with the only game he missed being due to suspension, and the midfielder’s defensive attributes have been on display on a regular basis over the past year.

There have been widespread reports suggesting the former Real Madrid man could still extend his contract, but his future remains up in the air, while there are also some doubts over whether Fernandes will remain a United player.

According to a report from The Mirror, the Portugal international, who is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, is attracting interest from elsewhere, with Saudi Pro League clubs known to be keen.

Consequently, Man United are now ready to enter the race for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, who has been a shining light for the Tricky Trees amid their poor start to the season.

Having impressed for Forest and England, Anderson’s asking price is now a whopping £75m, with a number of rival Premier League clubs also keen, including Manchester City and Chelsea.

Ruben Amorim views rebuilding his midfield as a priority, having previously looked at signing Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, with United now big admirers of the Forest star too.

Carragher said Man Utd star was "awful" in 24/25, now he's their best player

Manchester United appear to have conducted incredible business with the addition of one star.

ByEthan Lamb Oct 21, 2025 "Unbelievable" Anderson impressing for club and country

The 22-year-old has become a regular starter for the Three Lions under the helm of Thomas Tuchel, recently putting in a fantastic display in the 5-0 win against Latvia, completing 121 passes and making four tackles, the highest number of any player.

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has also made it clear he is a huge admirer of his former teammate, taking the time to praise his performances for Forest.

A £75m asking price is steep, but Anderson is a very well-rounded midfielder, also placing in the 85th percentile for assists per 90 over the past year, compared to other midfielders, so he would undoubtedly be an exciting addition to Amorim’s squad.

Manipur's Lamabam Ajay Singh given out for hitting the ball twice

The last instance of this rare dismissal in the Ranji Trophy came in 2005-06

Shashank Kishore18-Nov-2025 • Updated on 21-Nov-2025Manipur’s Lamabam Ajay Singh fell to one of cricket’s rarest dismissals in the Ranji Trophy plate league match against Meghalaya in Surat – given out for hitting the ball twice.Ajay had defended an Aryan Bora delivery, but hit it again to gently push it in the direction of the bowler. The Meghalaya players appealed and the umpire M Madhu ruled it out after giving it some thought. No one, including the batter, protested the umpire’s decision.Clause 34.1.1 of the MCC Laws states that a striker is out hitting the ball twice if, while the ball is in play, it makes contact with any part of their body or bat, and the striker then wilfully strikes it a second time with the bat or with any part of the body (other than a hand not holding the bat), before a fielder touches the ball – except when the second strike is solely to protect their wicket.

This dismissal does not fall under obstructing the field. Nor was the batter returning the ball to any fielder by hitting it for the second time. The last instance of this rare dismissal in the Ranji Trophy came in 2005-06, when Jammu & Kashmir captain Dhruv Mahajan was ruled out in similar fashion against Jharkhand. Before that, only three other Ranji cricketers had suffered the same fate: Andhra’s K Bavanna (1963-64), J&K’s Shahid Parvez (1986-87) and Tamil Nadu’s Anand George (1998-99).Ajay’s 20-ball duck on Tuesday was part of a lower-order collapse that left Manipur conceding an 88-run lead to Meghalaya. Manipur will hope to salvage a draw from this contest; one point will be enough to help secure a top-two spot and qualify for the Plate final.

Thelwell signing is a bigger waste of time than Chermiti & Miovski at Rangers

Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohl should be relatively pleased with his start to life in the dugout at Ibrox, with four wins out of four in the Scottish Premiership so far.

The Light Blues beat Livingston 2-1 at Ibrox in a controversial clash in their first game back after the international break, as no penalty was awarded for handball against Emmanuel Fernandez, who also scored the opening goal in the match.

Rangers got the job done, though, and claimed all three points thanks to a second-half strike from Mohamed Diomande, who tapped into an empty net at the back post.

The Ivorian central midfielder had an open goal in front of him because Bojan Miovski made a brilliant run over the top and poked the ball to Diomande as the goalkeeper came out to meet him.

It was a moment of real quality from the Macedonia international to help clinch all three points for the Scottish giants on Saturday, after what has been a difficult start to the campaign.

The Light Blues bolstered their attacking ranks with the £8m signing of Youssef Chermiti and the £4.2m signing of Miovski in the summer, and supporters may need to be patient with both of them.

Why Rangers fans need to be patient with Miovski and Chermiti

Rangers splashed the cash to bring those two centre-forwards to Ibrox, particularly Chermiti, and you can understand why some supporters may not be happy with what they have produced so far this season.

Both strikers have only scored one goal so far in the Scottish Premiership under Russell Martin, Stevie Smith, and Danny Rohl combined, which shows that they have rarely provided much in the way of quality in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, Chermiti and Miovski have both failed to offer value for money in the league since their respective big-money moves from Everton and Girona in the summer.

Rangers and their supporters should still have some patience, though, because Miovski is a proven Premiership goalscorer who can offer quality if he hits his stride.

The left-footed attacker, as shown in the graphic below, was a prolific scorer during his time with Aberdeen, before his move to Spain last year, and this suggests that there is still hope that he can turn his Ibrox career around.

Chermiti does not have the same history of goalscoring, having failed to score a single first-team goal in two seasons with Everton, that Miovski behind him has to suggest that he will come good, but the Portuguese striker is only 21.

The former Toffees flop has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and signed a long-term contract at Ibrox, which is why there may need to be patience with him to allow him to flourish as a player. It is not his fault that former sporting director Kevin Thelwell spent £8m on him, and he should be given a chance to prove his worth in the years to come.

Whilst patience is needed with Miovski and Chermiti, who were both permanent additions signed to long contracts, there are some other summer signings who should not be awarded the same patience.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Nasser Djiga was brought in on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers during the summer transfer window in an attempt to bolster Russell Martin’s defence, but he has been an even bigger waste of time than the two strikers.

Why Djiga has been a worse Rangers signing than Miovski and Chermiti

The Burkina Faso international is only on loan from the Premier League side until the end of the season and the club do not have an option to make the deal permanent next summer.

That means, as it stands, the central defender should only be judged on his performances in the short-term because he is not a player who the Light Blues will benefit from if he develops and improves by the end of the campaign, as he will be off down south to England again.

Therefore, on current performance levels, Djiga looks to be an even bigger waste of time than Miovski and Chermiti, because he is not delivering quality on the pitch for Rangers in the present.

The Wolves loanee, as shown by the table above, has been in and out of the side in recent weeks and months, which has been because of his inconsistent performances.

Injuries to John Souttar and Derek Cornelius provided him with a chance to impress against Livingston, but his error for Tete Yengi’s equaliser was described as “appalling” defending by reporter Tom English, as the centre-back allowed the forward to run off the back of him to score from a long pass.

That mistake against Livingston on Saturday is far from the first one that he has made in a Rangers shirt. Four Lads Had A Dream claimed that he

“genuinely looks lost” during the 3-1 defeat to Celtic in the semi-final of the League Cup earlier this month.

Djiga also got off to a poor start to life at Ibrox in August. He was sent off in a 1-1 draw with Dundee at Ibrox before making a ‘disastrous’ error at the start of the club’s Champions League play-off qualifier against Club Brugge.

These examples show that the central defender has been an unreliable performer for the Light Blues throughout the season, for both Martin and Rohl, which is why he has been a dismal signing on current evidence.

That is also why he has been an even bigger waste of time than Miovski and Chermiti, because the two strikers were permanent signings on multi-year deals and have time to turn things around, whilst Djiga was a season-long loan signing who should be making an instant impact.

The new Ryan Kent: Rangers can unearth "electrifying" Gassama upgrade

Rangers have a possible upgrade on Djedi Gassama who could be their next Ryan Kent, but he has not played any minutes this season.

ByDan Emery Nov 23, 2025

Unless the Wolves loanee can drastically turn his form around and prove himself to be a reliable figure at the back for Rohl, he may go down as one of the worst signings of the Thelwell era, which lasted one summer.

Dodgers Fan Gets Iconic Tattoo of Freddie Freeman's World Series Grand Slam

Freddie Freeman had a legendary World Series run with the victorious Los Angeles Dodgers this year, starting with his walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning of Game 1 over the New York Yankees.

He went on to hit a home run in the first four games of the World Series, and eventually won the World Series MVP award.

One Dodgers fan, The Bismarck Tribune's Maeve Hushman, decided to commemorate Freeman's World Series performance with a tattoo of his grand slam. The tattoo shows the numbers of the three players on the bases when Freeman hit his homer—No. 50 Mookie Betts on first, No. 25 Tommy Edman on second and No. 3 Chris Taylor on third. It then shows a ball being hit outside the ballpark.

What a creative way to celebrate the Dodgers' title. She will never forget Freeman's historical walk-off grand slam, that's for sure.

Klusener to remain in charge of Super Giants in SA20

There could be, however, big changes in their squad’s make-up, with the auction scheduled for September 9

Firdose Moonda15-Jul-2025Lance Klusener will remain in charge of Durban’s Super Giants in the fourth season of the SA20, despite the team finishing last on the points table in the previous one. Klusener has been with the franchise since the tournament’s inception and was in charge when they reached the final in 2024, when they lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape.”It’s a privilege to continue this journey with the Durban’s Super Giants and the RPSG Group. The support and belief shown in me is deeply appreciated. I look forward to building something even more special this season,” Klusener said in a statement. “We’ve laid the foundation over the past three years. Now, it’s time to build a team that can consistently challenge for the title and make Durban proud. Durban is my home. Coaching this franchise is more than a job–it’s a mission to build something enduring with our fans and players.”As Super Giants coach, he has worked with two different captains: Quinton de Kock in season one and Keshav Maharaj in the next two. While it is expected that Maharaj will continue, there is a player auction on September 9, and Klusener indicated there will be big shifts in their squad’s make-up. “We’ve done a deep review of our past season and have identified key areas for improvement. This auction gives us a crucial opportunity to strengthen our squad and return to our best,” he said.It is not known whether Klusener will keep his support staff, which consists of Jonty Rhodes and Morne Morkel. The latter is now India’s bowling coach.

Hansi Flick's Clasico call questioned by Toni Kroos as ex-Real Madrid star criticises Barcelona failed defensive plan to tame Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr

Toni Kroos has criticised Hansi Flick’s tactical setup in Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid, questioning the German coach’s choice of centre-backs and failure to contain Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. The former Real Madrid star also highlighted the loss of Inigo Martinez as a key factor behind Barca’s defensive struggles at the Bernabeu.

  • Kroos questions Flick’s defensive setup in El Clasico

Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu has reignited debate over Flick’s tactical approach. The German coach, who watched from the stands due to suspension, saw his side outpaced and outclassed by Madrid's forwards, with Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham on target in a statement win for Los Blancos.

While the Catalan giants showed promise in possession, their defensive structure crumbled under Madrid’s high tempo and direct transitions. Former World Cup winner Kroos voiced his surprise at Flick’s decision to start Eric Garcia alongside Pau Cubarsi, instead of opting for the more physical Ronald Araujo, a player known for his speed and strength in one-on-one duels.

Garcia start called out by ex-Madrid midfielder

Speaking on his podcast , Kroos explained that Barcelona’s defensive setup made little sense given Madrid’s attacking threat, singling out Flick’s centre-back selection as a major flaw.

“In the centre of defence, I don't understand why Garcia is playing,” Kroos said. “Football-wise, he’s slightly better than Araujo, but Araujo has the physical strength to chase down opponents more, especially when you're defending so high up the pitch. He would have been the ideal player for that style of play and that opponent.”

The ex-Los Blancos midfielder went on to emphasise how Barca’s lack of pace at the back played straight into Madrid’s hands. “When you have Mbappe and Vinícius up against you, you need someone who can match that pace,” he added. “Araujo can do that. I was very surprised by his absence.”

Indeed, Barcelona’s defenders struggled to contain the electric duo throughout the game, with Vinicius repeatedly stretching the backline and Mbappe exploiting the spaces behind. Flick’s decision to leave out Araujo left many fans and pundits baffled, with Kroos’s comments echoing a growing sense that Barca’s defensive organisation cost them dearly.

  • Loss of Inigo Martinez still haunting Barcelona

Beyond the tactical choices, the 35-year-old also pointed to a broader structural problem in Barcelona’s defence: the failure to replace Inigo Martinez, who joined Al-Nassr in the summer.

“I already mentioned it at the time: Inigo Martinez was very important,” Kroos noted. “Last year, he was Barca's centre-back with the best ball distribution. He wasn’t the fastest, but he was an excellent defender and had great build-up play. Against Real Madrid, his absence was noticeable when the team suffered under their high press. They didn’t replace him, and that’s taking its toll.”

Kroos did, however, acknowledge the difficult circumstances Flick faced on the night, adding: “It’s fair to say that Barça arrived very weakened: from the goalkeeper to the coach. They were missing key players like Raphinha, Dani Olmo and Lewandowski.”

His assessment underlined how Flick’s Barcelona remain a work in progress this season, capable of dominating possession but still searching for balance, particularly in defence.

Post-match El Clasico chaos and Flick’s next steps

Tensions boiled over after the final whistle, as several Madrid players confronted Lamine Yamal in a heated exchange. Dani Carvajal told the 18-year-old: “You speak too much. Speak now,” referring to Yamal’s pre-match Twitch comments joking that “Real Madrid steal.” The incident quickly escalated, with Vinícius Jr. and Jude Bellingham joining the fray before officials intervened to separate the sides.

The defeat leaves Barca five points adrift of league leaders Real, forcing Flick to reassess his defensive options and tactical setup. The German coach has acknowledged the loss of Martinez as a major blow and is expected to shuffle his backline in upcoming fixtures. Barcelona now turn their attention to their next La Liga clash against Elche, hoping to regain momentum before the international break. With injuries still mounting and tensions rising, Flick’s immediate task will be restoring belief in a squad that remains talented but fragile after a bruising Clasico setback.

Will Hazlewood and Chahal come back for Qualifier 1?

What will the PBKS and RCB line-ups look like, and where will the IPL 2025 Qualifier 1 be won and lost?

ESPNcricinfo staff29-May-20252:31

An 18-year wait to end this season?

Are the top-two teams the right top-two teams?Moody: Probably the two best teams consistently over this year’s IPL find themselves in the right positions of one and two, even though every team sort of had their struggles to attempt to get into those preferred slots of one and two. Both [are] in form. We’re in for an absolute cracking match.Abhinav: Punjab Kings are sort of rejuvenated under this new duo of Shreyas [Iyer] and [Ricky] Ponting. Ponting’s a serial winner while he played and took MI to the title [in IPL 2015] and DC to the playoffs – didn’t have a last couple of good years with Delhi. But Shreyas Iyer’s been exceptional as captain, and he deserves all the praise for taking Punjab to No. 1.RCB, again, I think their biggest conversation would have been: ‘okay, we have qualified, we need to qualify top two’. I think GT’s loss is RCB’s gain. Because if GT had won both, RCB would not have qualified [in the top two]. But I think RCB have done very, very well to get there, and both are very deserving. What will the playing XIs/XIIs look like?Moody: I don’t see that [Jamieson playing] changing, particularly given that [Ponting] has made that comment [about Jamieson being in PBKS’ plans]. And it makes perfect sense to give him a decent run before the all-important final. I was surprised, I must admit, that Jamieson got in ahead of Bartlett, given that Bartlett’s been part of the whole team set-up throughout the whole campaign and already played a few games, but Ricky Ponting and the gang there know exactly what’s happening within that squad better than what we do.Related

Unstoppable and unsatisfied: how Punjab Kings marched into their first IPL playoffs in 11 years

Giving up big names for big impact: RCB's reinvention pays off

Abhinav: I think so [Chahal will play]. I think they will play both the spinners [Harpreet Brar the other], because last year, that was one venue which surprised us all in terms of the degree of turn. New Chandigarh had a lot of assistance for spinners, and even Punjab Kings vs KKR, that was the game where Chahal did his magic and they ended up defending that low score. So he [Chahal] will be huge, especially in the context [of the game], and there’s also this little element of him having played for RCB.Moody: Thushara was brilliant in that last game, and… obviously we know what Hazlewood’s done and what his record stands for. So, you can guarantee he is coming into the side. Whether they opt for both those overseas players and look at either Romario Shepherd sitting out and playing another Indian batter, or Suyash [Sharma] might be one that steps aside.Abhinav: It’s a tough one. You’ve got to understand who gives you that extra option. So, in case of [Liam] Livingstone, what happens is if you’re playing both Thushara and Hazlewood, then maybe Livingstone is your spin option, and you can toy with the idea of having that impact sub. Then Romario Shepherd sits out, unfortunately. Have you got enough trust or faith in your players for another Indian batter to come in as a pure batter at No. 5 or 6? That’s the question. It’s a tough call.Moody: That [David’s absence] will be very much in the front of their mind. It’s very hard to judge Livingstone on one ball – we all know what he is capable of doing – and he hasn’t quite caught fire this season, but he’s played a lot of international cricket, played a lot of big games, so there’s no reason why he wouldn’t step up in the final.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

What should we expect from the New Chandigarh venue?Abhinav: New Chandigarh is basically a venue where you don’t know what sort of pitches to expect. You’ve got a 111 and you’ve got a 219 at the same venue. So that is a very big difference between the kind of scores you see in New Chandigarh. I really hope it is a surface that is true and plays good cricket.Picks for match-defining head-to-head contests?Moody: I am quite looking forward to the Arshdeep Singh match-up against Phil Salt. I think that’s going to be intriguing because, to this point, Arshdeep’s got his measure, well and truly. He’s got him out four times for just 25 runs. So that is quite a significant difference.Abhinav: I’m going the other way. I’m going Josh Hazlewood – if he plays, and I think he will – up against Shreyas Iyer. Five innings, three outs, nine runs. Think he got him out in the World Cup game as well, at Chepauk.Who goes through to the final from Qualifier 1?Moody: I’ve got RCB’s nose just in front.Abhinav: And I’m going with Punjab.
