Shohei Ohtani Provides Encouraging Update on Shoulder Injury After Dodgers’ Game 3 Win

One win away from a World Series title, the Los Angeles Dodgers are thankful to have Shohei Ohtani in the lineup, as injured as he may be.

Ohtani, who partially separated his left shoulder while trying to steal a base in Game 2 against the New York Yankees, gritted his way through a Game 3 outing on Monday night in which he went hitless. Sporting a sling before the game, Ohtani was 0-for-3 with a walk and was hit by a pitch, and he was visibly uncomfortable while swinging at the plate.

After the Dodgers’ 4-2 win, Ohtani spoke briefly about his injury and told reporters “the pain has subsided,” an encouraging update all things considered.

“I taped myself up today, so it did feel different compared to when I don’t tape myself,” Ohtani said, via his interpreter. “The last at-bat, I felt like if I took that ball it would have been a walk, so I still felt like I had a pretty good at-bat there.”

Ohtani also provided details about what he was wearing before the game, saying that he was told by trainers to wear a device “that keeps my shoulder warm.”

After his injury scare in Game 2, Ohtani remained the designated hitter and opened the night with a leadoff walk before being brought home by Freddie Freeman’s two-run homer, helping Los Angeles extend their series lead at Yankee Stadium. With a commanding 3-0 advantage in the World Series, the Dodgers have to feel pretty good about their chances of winning the championship.

As for Ohtani’s long-term future, the two-way superstar had a cautiously optimistic response to whether or not he would require offseason surgery on his shoulder.

“I haven't had further conversations about the future plan,” Ohtani said. “I think it's something that's going to happen after the season is over, do additional testing. But in terms of how I feel now, I don't think so.”

Gerrard has already made key Thelwell demand at Ibrox as Rangers return draws near

In a fresh Gers update on the potential arrival of Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, reports are now indicating that Teddy Bears chief, Kevin Thelwell, has been asked to change his role slightly at Rangers.

Who could join Gerrard at Rangers?

It looks as though Gerrard is almost certain to become the next Rangers manager at this stage.

The Liverpool legend is reportedly on the brink of an agreement and his backroom staff is already a topic of discussion in Glasgow. After admitting the need to lean on his staff, the Gers could yet welcome back some more familiar faces in the coming days.

According to recent reports, Gary McAllister and Jermain Defoe are likely to join Gerrard by returning to Rangers and the incoming boss also wants to bring former England coach Steve Holland to the club. Perhaps in an ideal world for Gerrard personally, Michael Beale would be coming back to his role as assistant, but his return to the club would not be as welcomed.

Getting things right in every department, from the manager to the rest of his staff, should be a top priority for the 49ers.

The last thing they need is to fail twice in their first year in Scotland, having already watched Russell Martin crash and burn.

Gerrard’s arrival should steady the ship after such a disastrous start. Whether it’s enough to keep hold of the likes of Nicolas Raskin is another question, however. Recent transfer rumours have suggested that Besiktas are ready to rescue the midfielder as soon as January in what would be an early blow for the new manager.

After telling one Ibrox chief to change his role upon his arrival, though, it’s the type of situation that Gerrard will be hoping to avoid.

Steven Gerrard tells Kevin Thelwell to adjust Rangers role

According to talkSPORT, with his return drawing near, Gerrard has indirectly told Kevin Thelwell to adjust his role as sporting director, with the incoming new manager demanding a “decisive say” on transfers and Rangers’ recruitment drive.

Celtic warned Gerrard has immediate Ibrox plan that Rangers fans will love

He’s already got lofty ambitions…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 11, 2025

Whilst Martin received his fair share of criticism in the summer, Thelwell hasn’t exactly enjoyed an impressive start to life at Rangers.

The sporting director helped bring as many as 14 fresh faces to Glasgow in the summer transfer window, and it’s difficult to pick one name other than Djeidi Gassama who has got off to a positive start.

Former Rangers ace Kris Boyd recognised that when Martin’s tenure came to an end.

Whether Gerrard’s influence turns things around on the recruitment front is now the big question, as Thelwell looks to turn his own poor start around at Ibrox.

West Ham "sensation" could be the biggest winner from Nuno's appointment

West Ham United officially confirmed the departure of Graham Potter as the club’s first-team head coach with immediate effect on Saturday morning, less than 72 hours before their Premier League clash with Everton.

The English manager, formerly of Brighton and Chelsea, only won six of his 25 matches in charge of the club in all competitions, a win rate of 24%.

He can have no complaints with the decision by the board, given that record, but the timing of it, after he took the press conference ahead of the game against Everton, is slightly strange.

Former Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo has immediately replaced Potter in the dugout, as the Hammers look to get their season back on track.

Why Nuno Espirito Santo is a great appointment for West Ham

The Portuguese head coach led Forest to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last term, before a fractured relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis led to his dismissal earlier this season.

Nuno has led Wolves and Forest to European football in England, which shows that he has a successful track record in the division, and his skills as a defensive coach are exactly what West Ham need.

Heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures, not taking Saturday’s results into account, West Ham were bottom of the Premier League for goals conceded (13) and 16th in the division for xGA (7.6), per FBref.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Last season, Nuno’s Forest team ranked ninth for xGA (48.9) and sixth for goals conceded (46), per FBref, which shows that he can organise a defence and make a side solid and hard to beat.

The biggest winner from Nuno Espirito Santo's arrival at West Ham

The biggest winner from Potter’s sacking and the former Forest manager’s arrival at the London Stadium could be central defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

After starting in defeats to Sunderland and Chelsea, the Frenchman was an unused substitute in the games against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace in the last two weeks.

Nuno’s arrival could revive his West Ham career because the Portuguese boss has often utilised a 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-3 formation, which would open the door for him to return to the starting XI with the extra centre-back spot available in that system.

During his time at Wolves, the tactician explained that the 3-4-3 system allowed Conor Coady, the middle centre-back, to progress the play with his ability on the ball, which is why Todibo could thrive in that formation.

As you can see in the table above, the France international was far more influential in possession during his time with Nice in Ligue 1 in the 2023/24 campaign than he was with the Hammers last term.

This suggests that West Ham were not using Todibo, who was once described as a “ball-playing sensation” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, enough in possession with their build-up play.

Nuno’s 3-4-3 system, should he opt to go with that, could get the best out of the Frenchman by deploying him in the same role that Coady had at Wolves, allowing him time and space to pick out passes or to carry the ball forward as the middle centre-back in a three.

Therefore, the former Nice star could be the biggest winner from Nuno’s appointment because he may go from being an unused substitute under Potter to an influential part of the system under the new manager because of his ball-playing qualities at centre-back.

Max Holden century leads Middlesex fightback

Middlesex 260 and 288 for 6 (Holden 135*, Geddes 74, Bailey 3-47) lead Lancashire 359 (Harris 138, Jennings 55, Jones 40) by 186 runsMax Holden’s sixth first-class hundred led a Middlesex fightback on day three at Lord’s to set up the prospect of an exciting finish against Division Two title favourites Lancashire. The Cambridge-born left-hander followed up his half-century of the first innings with an unbeaten 135 to rescue his side from the havoc of 7 for 3 in the wake of Tom Bailey’s superb three-wicket opening salvo.Holden shared stands of 106 with Ryan Higgins (43) and 163 with debutante Ben Geddes (74) as the hosts reached 288 for 6 at stumps.Bailey couldn’t add to his pre-lunch heroics, but late wickets with the second new ball gave the visitors the edge once more ahead of day four. All this unfolded after Lancashire added just six to their overnight first-innings score to be bowled out for 359, Saturday’s centurion Marcus Harris last to go for 138, Zafar Gohar finishing with 4 for 79.It was only two seasons ago Middlesex found themselves 4 for 4 in the first game of the season with the top four all dismissed without scoring and while this wasn’t quite as calamitous, Bailey’s new-ball spell still caused much scrambling on of pads in the home dressing-room.Nathan Fernandes looked nervous from the get-go and Bailey soon lured him into fencing at one he should have left alone, allowing wicketkeeper Matty Hurst to gobble up the chance. If Fernandes was culpable, then Sam Robson was undone by a super piece of bowling, Bailey squaring up the former England opener and rapping him on the pad. Any hope it would be considered too high was quickly dashed as umpire Surendiran Shanmugan sent him on his way.Two balls later, 7 for 2 became 7 for 3 as Leus du Ploy slashed wildly at a ball around fifth stump giving Hurst his second catch in a matter of minutes. Bailey had taken 3 for 2 in 15 balls, leaving the hosts staring at the prospect of defeat inside three days.Calm heads were required and for the second time in the match it was former England Lions batter Holden who was first to raise his hand, employing a mix of studious defence with drives caressed through the covers and savage square cuts.Six such boundaries carried him past 50 and there would be seven more on the way to three figures, reached in style with an on-drive back past the stumps to the pavilion rope.Fightbacks of course need co-conspirators and not for the first time, Ryan Higgins was first to come to the left-hander’s assistance. A classy pull shot in front of square got the allrounder moving and he then dispatched Luke Wells deliveries to the fence twice in the same over.Bailey returned immediately after lunch as a game of patience unfolded, the two batters resisting his second surge and a miserly spell from Will Williams to raise the 100 partnership. It required a jaffer from George Balderson to castle Higgins with the hosts 14 in front, but Geddes, a young player hailed this week by Richard Johnson as a player with a ‘high ceiling’, came in to take the baton and after a shaky start he too blossomed, an off-drive through midwicket the pick of his early boundaries.By tea the lead had swollen to 72 and the pair showed greater intent after the resumption to move the stand to 100 and beyond.Geddes reached his half-century with five fours, before falling to the second new ball, though replays suggested he hadn’t made contact with the delivery which found its way to Hurst’s gloves.Nightwatcher Blake Cullen also perished before stumps, but Holden remains to try and steer Middlesex to a defendable total on day four.

McCoist left stunned by "incredible" Martin decision after Rangers defeat

The pressure is continuing to mount on Rangers manager Russell Martin, with Gers legend Ally McCoist now describing one situation as “incredible”.

New update on Martin's Rangers future

It was another terrible day at the office for Rangers on Saturday afternoon, with Hearts winning 2-0 at Ibrox thanks to Lawrence Shankland’s double.

For Martin, it was potentially another nail in the coffin, with the 39-year-old making an extremely disappointing start to life in charge of the Gers, not yet winning a game in the Scottish Premiership this season.

That said, fresh reports suggest that the Englishman has been given a vote of confidence by the owners for the time being, with The Daily Record claiming that 49ers Enterprises have “decided to stick” with him.

It is clear that huge improvements are required at Rangers, in terms of results, performances and also Martin’s relationship with certain players.

McCoist fumes at "incredible" Martin decision

Speaking live on talkSPORT on Monday [via Rangers Review], McCoist bemoaned the Nicolas Raskin situation at Rangers, with Martin’s continuing to freeze the key midfielder out of the squad.

“Now, there’s obviously a problem with Raskin. There’s no doubt about that, something has happened. But from where I’m sitting, you cannot bite your nose off to spite your face. If you’ve got a problem with Raskin – and he [Russell Martin] clearly has – I think he’s got to let the public know what that problem is.

Ally McCoist on TNT Sports

“Because we’re all sitting there watching that game at the weekend, and Raskin would walk into that team. He scored for Belgium during the week in an international. There’s nobody on the planet going to tell me that Raskin should not be in the Rangers starting 11.

“Why is he not in the starting 11? There has to be an incredible reason for it, because you can’t leave him out if it’s to the detriment of the team. The team is the most important thing, not an individual problem between a manager and a player.”

This is a saga that desperately needs sorting, with Martin’s stubbornness in not playing Raskin now arguably backfiring, with the manager needing to bite the bullet and bring him back in.

It feels as though Martin is right on the edge at Ibrox, so frankly, he may as well make a change and play an important player, in order to potentially help save his job.

Rangers can forget Dyche & Gerrard by hiring"outstanding" Martin upgrade

With Russell Martin on the brink of being sacked by Rangers, the 49ers should appoint an “outstanding” candidate, not Sean Dyche or Steven Gerrard.

ByBen Gray Sep 15, 2025

It remains to be seen if he is willing to do so, however, and if his decision has been made with Raskin, nothing will change unless he is dismissed, or until the midfielder possibly leaves in January.

Harry Kane chases down ridiculous Cristiano Ronaldo & Erling Haaland record as Bayern Munich striker makes more Bundesliga history

Harry Kane is chasing down a goal-scoring record set by Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland as he continues to make more history with Bayern Munich. The England captain was in fine form on Saturday as he scored a hat-trick in the Bavarian side's 4-1 win over Hoffenheim. This was Kane's ninth hat-trick since moving to Germany in 2023.

Kane rewrites Bundesliga history with latest goals

With a hat-trick against Hoffenheim on Saturday, Kane reached 70 goals in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich in just 67 appearances, which is the quickest any footballer has reached the 70-goal mark in the league's history.

AdvertisementGettyKane aiming to break Ronaldo & Haaland's record

Kane has now scored 98 goals for Bayern in 103 appearances across all competitions. He will be the quickest player to reach the 100-goal mark in a top-five European League if he nets a brace against Werder Bremen next Friday. Right now, that record is jointly held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland, who achieved the feat in 105 matches for Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively.

German media offer apology to Kane

The English forward has received an apology from a German journalist, who had questioned Bayern's decision to pay €100m to Tottenham for a striker entering his thirties. The journalist took back his words and praised Kane's strict discipline and work ethic.

Where will the Champions Trophy be played? ICC to take final call after November 29 meeting

The ICC has called for a board meeting on November 29, hoping to get a clear answer on where and how the 2025 Champions Trophy will be played. With India not willing to travel to Pakistan and with Pakistan refusing to back down and adopt a hybrid model that allows India to play their games in a second country, it is likely members will be asked to vote on a solution. ESPNcricinfo understands the meeting will be virtual and a final decision could be taken after the ICC Board arrives at a consensus. While the window for the eight-team ODI tournament has been earmarked between February 19 and March, the ICC has not announced the dates as well or a schedule formally. Normally, for a global tournament, the ICC has in the past announced the schedule 100 days prior to the event. The reason for the delay is the Indian government’s refusal to allow Rohit Sharma’s team the permission to travel to Pakistan. That decision was communicated to the ICC a fortnight ago. The PCB, who were awarded the hosting rights for Champions Trophy in 2021, subsequently wrote to the ICC posing several questions around the exact reasons BCCI had given, and when they informed the ICC. According to a PCB official, they have not received a response from the ICC to date. The PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has remained steadfast about hosting the entire tournament in Pakistan, at three venues: Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. Last week he said he would be open to a dialogue with the BCCI to break the deadlock. An ICC spokesperson confirmed Friday’s meeting, but the PCB has made no comment so far.Related

Sunderland can forget Xhaka by breaking transfer record for £38m "monster"

Sunderland are continuing to break the bank as they go about assembling a Premier League-ready squad.

At the time of writing, an estimated £104m has already been spent on improving the quality of players Regis Le Bris has at his disposal, with £30m on its own being splashed on new club-record purchase Habib Diarra.

Staggeringly, although Diarra’s addition already significantly bolsters the Black Cats in the middle of the park, Granit Xhaka also appears to be on the ambitious shopping list, with his Premier League experience on the books of Arsenal one major factor as to why he’s potentially being pursued.

Sunderland's ongoing hunt for Xhaka

Xhaka would enter the building with a mammoth 225 Premier League games next to his name, with a further 17 goals and 24 assists coming his way as a fiery, but attack-minded midfielder at the Emirates.

Therefore, it does feel like a no-brainer on Sunderland’s end to try and win the Switzerland international’s signature, considering reports seem to suggest that Bayer Leverkusen are open to selling Xhaka this summer.

That comes amid further claims earlier in the week that Black Cats officials had been in talks with Leverkusen concerning a deal for the midfielder.

Despite Xhaka’s emergence as a box-crashing midfielder during his final year with the club, it wasn’t always rosy for the 32-year-old in North London, with a poor disciplinary record of four red cards and 57 yellow cards sticking out when assessing his previous Premier League numbers in more detail.

Moreover, whilst he has shone out in Germany with Leverkusen over his past two seasons – as a Bundesliga title even came his way – it’s not a given that he will be able to dust off the Arsenal cobwebs effectively back in an environment he has found previously challenging, particularly if he now finds himself even more up against it in a relegation dog-fight.

Whilst on the surface, this looks as if it would be a sublime capture, Sunderland could shift their focus away from the 32-year-old by exploring another move.

Sunderland's big-money Xhaka alternative

This alternate target is able to boast Premier League experience too, albeit just from far fewer games than Xhaka managed for the red half of North London.

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano via X, Sunderland made direct contact earlier in the week over a deal for ex-Fulham midfielder Frank Zambo-Anguissa, off the back of the 29-year-old continuing to stand out at Napoli with his consistent midfield displays.

Napoli's Frank Anguissa in action with Genoa's MortenFrendrup

Once upon a time, Anguissa called Craven Cottage home, with a mere three assists from 58 top-flight matches coming the Cameroonian’s way before Italy came calling.

Now, he has become a first-team regular in Naples, with his numbers from last season putting him on the same pedestal as Xhaka as a fierce, yet goal-hungry midfielder.

Amazingly, despite never finding the back of the net for Fulham, Anguissa actually bettered Xhaka in this department last season for Antonio Conte’s title-winners, alongside matching up to the 32-year-old’s attritional side with the same amount of duels won on average.

This bite in Anguissa’s game in Serie A was evident during his Premier League stay too, winning a high 7.3 duels per game across his final top-flight campaign for the Cottagers, which should stand him in good stead for a potential basement battle back on English shores.

Whilst the “monster” Anguissa – as he’s been glowingly labelled by analyst Raj Chohan – might cost a bumper £38m to get through the door, owing to his release clause, it feels as if this could be another golden signing from Europe that sends out a statement to the rest of the Premier League.

On the other hand, Xhaka feels like a far safer signing, as the Black Cats attempt to flex their muscles even more with sprinkles of immense quality.

AI predicts how many Ballon d'Ors Messi would've won if he played with Ronaldo

AI tool ChatGPT has taken a look at how Lionel Messi would have fared alongside his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo

ByRobbie Walls Jul 11, 2025 Players who have turned down Saudi Arabia moves 1 Lionel Messi

Back in 2023, Lionel Messi decided to leave Paris Saint-Germain and was wanted by Al-Hilal.

The Argentine, fresh off the back of a World Cup triumph in Qatar, was offered a three-year contract worth £1.3bn, where he would earn €500 million per season to make him the richest footballer in history.

However, Messi, considered the greatest of all time by many, snubbed the advances of the Saudi Pro League and instead made the move to the MLS with Inter Miami.

2 Bruno Fernandes

In 2025, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was also wanted by Al-Hilal, two years after they moved for Messi.

The attacking midfielder was offered £700,000-a-week plus bonuses, treble his Old Trafford wage, whereas the Red Devils were also in line to bring in £100m in a transfer fee.

However, Fernandes wanted to play at the ‘top level in Europe’, so snubbed the Saudi interest.

3 Romelu Lukaku

A running theme with Al-Hilal missing out on European targets saw Romelu Lukaku snub them ahead of the 2023/2024 campaign.

At the time, the Belgium striker was still under contract at Chelsea after a loan spell with Inter Milan and was the subject of a £50m per season proposal.

He turned the Saudi Pro League down, though, counting his career in Italy with AS Roma and Napoli.

4 Kylian Mbappe

In what would have been the most expensive signing in football history, Kylian Mbappe was the subject of interest from Al-Hilal in 2023, and they even reportedly agreed a €300m transfer fee with Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe was even offered a one-year deal worth €700m where he could of then sealed his dream move to Real Madrid. The French superstar did get his move to the Bernabeu, however, he stayed in Paris instead of heading to the Saudi Pro League for 12 months.

5 Son Heung-Min

Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-Min has become a Spurs legend since moving to north London back in 2015, and he turned down the chance to join Al-Ittihad in 2023.

The South Korean said that ‘money doesn’t matter’ when linked with a move to Al-Ittihad, who were willing to pay Tottenham more than £50m at the time. In the end, they brought in former Real Madrid star Karim Benzema.

6 Ousmane Dembele

Ronaldo and Ousmane Dembele is a partnership that could have been for Al-Nassr, with the Saudi side targeting the France star when he was still on the books of Barcelona.

Al-Nassr were even willing to pay Dembele £35m per season for five years, however, he ended up turning them down to move to Paris Saint-Germain.

7 Jamie Vardy

Jamie Vardy has 13 hugely successful years at the King Power Stadium. The Foxes legend won the Premier League and FA Cup with Leicester, but back in 2023, turned down an approach from Al-Khaleej.

It is unknown just how much Al-Khaleej were willing to offer the striker, who ended up staying with the Foxes for two more years before leaving in 2025.

9 Sergio Busquets

Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets came up against Ronaldo plenty of times in Spain, and the pair could have been teammates for Al-Nassr in 2023.

The holding midfielder was the subject of a €20m per season offer from the Saudi side, however, Busquets ended up snubbing the prospect of playing alongside Ronaldo to reunite with Messi at Inter Miami.

10 Bernardo Silva

Manchester City star Bernardo Silva has been a Saudi Pro League target for a number of years, and in 2023, was offered a deal three times more than his Etihad contract to head to the Middle East.

Al-Hilal were willing to pay the Portuguese midfielder £500,000-a-week, however, he remained in England under Pep Guardiola.
