Campbell drops Rangers squad claim

Jordan Campbell from the Athletic has dropped a Rangers squad claim that could leave Ibrox boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst delighted.

What’s the latest?

The news surrounds the Rangers squad ahead of the rest of the season and Campbell gave an update via his Twitter page, saying:

“Would take something huge to alter Rangers’ plans for the squad this season. Katic & Kelly likely to leave but everyone else will play a role.”

This should offer some comfort to Van Bronckhorst and the Rangers faithful knowing that the squad is settled and ready to embark on yet another gruelling campaign.

More signings look unlikely

Following a tepid start to the summer transfer window, there has been an influx of activity during the previous three weeks which has given the Ibrox side a solid spine to the squad.

Ben Davies, Antonio Colak, Tom Lawrence, Rabbi Matondo, and Malik Tillman arrived at Ibrox as the Dutchman gave the side somewhat of a makeover, with the inevitable departures of Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey, new replacements were required.

The Gers defeated Union Saint-Gilloise 3-2 on aggregate to reach the Champions League play-off round where Dutch side PSV Eindhoven await them.

The comeback victory will have given the team confidence ahead of the mouth-watering tie and shows that Van Bronckhorst’s side appears to be gelling together quite well.

The manager has also had somewhat of a clear out of fringe players this summer, with Glenn Middleton, Jack Simpson, Cedric Itten, and Andy Firth all departing the club and freeing up space for the new faces.

Campbell’s update also states that Nikola Katic and Stephen Kelly are also likely to leave as first-team football appears unlikely for the pair. With Alex Lowry and Leon King likely to continue their development in the first team this season, it proves there is a pathway from academy to senior football at the club.

Van Bronckhorst will be delighted at how his squad is shaping up, despite the performances in the first couple of matches falling short of the high Ibrox standard. St Johnstone awaits at Ibrox tomorrow ahead of the crucial Champions League first leg on Tuesday and three points will be expected.

Aston Villa: Preece shuts down Depay links

Reported Aston Villa target Memphis Depay is available this summer according to widespread reports and Ashley Preece.

What’s the word?

As per Villa correspondent Ashley Preece – in a Q and A for Birmingham Mail – the Dutchman is on the market this summer amid Steven Gerrard’s desire to land a new forward.

That said, asked if there was any truth to the online speculation linking the 28-year-old with a move to Villa Park, the respected source stated: “I’ve had nothing on those Depay links, nor have my colleagues. I’d be really surprised if Villa were to make a move. Player is available, as we know, Spurs have been linked as well. I just can’t see that happening from a Villa point of view, as things stand.”

As Preece alluded to, the former Lyon man – who only arrived at the Camp Nou last year on a free transfer – is seemingly up for sale this summer, amid reports that he is even set to see his number nine shirt relinquished following the arrival of Poland hotshot, Robert Lewandowski.

Time to act

Although the situation could well change as the window closes, it doesn’t appear at present that Depay is in line to join the Villans, with supporters set to be gutted at not being able to see the £31.5m-rated man in a claret and blue jersey this season.

However, that’s precisely why the decision makers at Villa Park need to act now and as Preece says, spring a “surprise” to bring him to the club. Despite his frustrating situation in Catalonia, the one-time Manchester United man still boasts a respectable record for the La Liga side, having scored 13 goals and provided two assists in 37 games for the club thus far.

That tally includes 12 goals from just 28 league appearances last season – only 20 of which came from the start – with the 80-cap international also averaging an impressive 1.6 key passes per game and creating five big chances.

Prior to joining to La Blaugrana, the £158k-per-week menace had also been in explosive form in France, scoring 76 goals and providing 55 assists in 178 games at Parc Olympique Lyonnais after rejuvenating his career following a difficult stint at Old Trafford.

Almost a sure thing when it comes to providing goals and assists, the 5 foot 9 superstar – who ranks joint-second in the all-time scoring charts for Oranje – would seemingly solve Villa’s attacking woes, with the club’s top scorer last term having been that of Ollie Watkins with just 11 goals in all competitions.

An enigmatic and charismatic figure, Depay is the type of character and type of player who can light up a stadium, with it time for Johan Lange and co to make a late dash to sign the Netherlands international in the remaining weeks of the window.

Arsenal still eyeing Youri Tielemans

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has shed some light on Arsenal’s ongoing pursuit of Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer.

The lowdown: Arsenal’s interest in Tielemans

The Gunners have been extensively linked with the 25-year-old throughout the summer transfer window as Mikel Arteta and Edu attempt to strengthen the squad at the Emirates Stadium.

However, the north Londoners face familiar competition for Tielemans as Football Insider claimed that Manchester United are prepared to battle it out for the Belgium international, having already snatched Lisandro Martinez from the Gunners’ apparent grasp.

Despite the apparent strong interest in Tielemans from Arsenal, there has been no concrete movement on a deal, and one well-informed onlooker has now had his say on the current state of play…

The latest: ‘Top target’

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that the Gunners remain keen on the 52-cap Belgian and believes that a deal could yet materialise ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

He said: “I think Arteta would like to bring in another midfielder and Tielemans has been the top target throughout the summer, but they’re gonna have to see what they can do in the transfer market because Leicester will be looking for top dollar for him.

“They’re not going to be willing to sell them on the cheap, but Leicester also need to sell players this summer as well to raise funds themselves. So there could be an interesting few weeks to see what happens in this potential deal.”

The verdict: Here’s hoping

Although the transfer business carried out so far can only be commended as Arsenal have certainly bolstered their ranks, particularly in an attacking sense with the capture of Gabriel Jesus, there remains further room for improvement in the squad.

As things stand, Arteta can only call upon Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny in a senior capacity, along with a relatively unproven Albert Sambi Lokonga and new arrival Fabio Vieira, to carry out conventional central midfield duties. That leaves space for at least one more proven Premier League operator in the engine room.

Once dubbed a ‘sublime’ player by sports journalist Josh Bunting and sharing similar traits to the likes of Rodrigo De Paul, Joshua Kimmich and Arsenal target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (FBRef), the cultured Tielemans would bring an abundance of elite-level experience and unerring passing ability to the north Londoners.

Furthermore, the £49.5m-valued Belgian is into the final 12 months of his deal at the King Power Stadium and could be available for much less than his true worth in the market, making any attempted swoop from Edu a welcome one.

West Ham: Insider shares ‘talks’ as GSB eye ‘very clever’ move

West Ham United insider Claret & Hugh say ‘lots of talks’ have been held as GSB eye a ‘very clever’ signing for David Moyes.

The Lowdown: Hammers eye striker move…

After the arrival of Nayef Aguerd in a £30 million deal from Rennes, the Hammers are reliably tipped to carry that momentum long into the summer amid ‘very busy’ times at the club.

As backed by Sky journalist Dharmesh Sheth, Moyes and the club are seeking at least six new additions as they gear up for what will be a very intriguing 2022/2023 Premier League season.

The east Londoners narrowly missed out of Europa League football for next campaign and this may have come as a warning sign for West Ham who wish to keep chase with England’s elite.

The Latest: Insider shares ‘lots of talks’…

As per insider C&H, sharing a message from their source, it is believed that ‘lots of talks’ are being held through agents for one forward.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates-2/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, according to their information, Chelsea striker Armando Broja is indeed Moyes’ top target amid these regular discussions with intermediaries and the 20-year-old is open to joining the club.

West Ham apparently wish to pay £30 million for the Albania international but whether that proves to be enough will be found out soon enough.

The Verdict: Make the move…

Even though Broja tailed off towards the end of 20/21 on his Southampton loan spell, potentially signing him for £30m could be seen as good business.

He dazzled in all matches against West Ham last season and attracted plenty of praise over the course of his St. Mary’s temporary deal.

Pundit Noel Whelan, speaking to Football Insider, claimed an Irons swoop for Broja would be a ‘very clever’ signing for Moyes and we’re inclined to agree given he is still just 20-years-old and already proven in the top flight.

Tottenham chasing Axel Disasi

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi, according to a report from Marca (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown: Hot prospect

Signed by Reims for €15m (£13m) in 2020 (Transfermarkt), the Frenchman has so far spent his entire career in his homeland and is enjoying an upwards career trajectory.

Previously linked with a move to Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal, Disasi has gone from strength to strength in Ligue 1 and has now amassed 92 appearances in the French top flight.

As Spurs manager Antonio Conte looks to add additional centre-back options to Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez, the 24-year-old could be on his radar…

The latest: Spurs ‘interested’ in Disasi

As per Marca, translated by Sport Witness, Tottenham are ‘interested’ in signing Disasi this summer.

It is claimed that Spurs have ‘been after’ the former France under-20 starlet for a prolonged period and could hold an advantage over fellow suitors Atletico Madrid in their pursuit.

The Lilywhites can muster an ‘important financial effort’ to sign the man praised for his by journalist Eduardo Hagn ‘insane strength and power’, due to Arletico needing to sell numerous players this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict: Smart signing

Seemingly a player reaching his peak, snapping up Disasi would be a brilliant piece of business from Fabio Paratici, particularly with Conte craving improvements in the defence having conceded 40 goals in the Premier League last term, the most of the top-four finishers.

During 2021/22, the Frenchman – who can also play at full-back and has operated as a makeshift centre-forward previously – earned a 6.90 Sofascore rating, with 1.3 tackles and 2.3 clearances made per Ligue 1 outing and a 93% passing accuracy in his own half of the pitch.

Bearing a close stylistic likeness to Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire and heavily-linked Villarreal defender Pau Torres (FBRef), Disasi would appear to be the ideal candidate for Conte in the grander scheme of things in terms of budget as the Italian looks to strengthen the entire Tottenham squad.

Tottenham: Alasdair Gold shares Djed Spence update

Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has now shared an update on the Lilywhites’ pursuit of Championship starlet Djed Spence.

The Lowdown: Tottenham eye Spence move…

According to recent reports, Spurs are still well and truly in contention to sign the 21-year-old, who dazzled on loan at Nottingham Forest from Middlesbrough over 2021/22.

Spence was a key figure and mainstay in Forest’s push for Premier League promotion, making a ‘significant’ contribution for manager Steve Cooper as he started 41 league matches and earned the squad’s sixth-highest rating from WhoScored.

As such, the north Londoners are reliably believed to be keen on signing him for Antonio Conte, and while some reports suggest that a fee has been agreed, Gold has come out with a claim to the contrary.

The Latest: Gold shares Spence update…

The football.london journalist took to Twitter after seeing ‘confirmation’ from the Boro side that no club is in advanced talks to sign Spence just yet.

However, Gold did go on to say that ‘early’ developments are expected this coming week.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Make the move…

Homegrown and possessing bags of potential as an attack-minded wing-back -he was included in the EFL Championship Team of the Season – we believe that signing Spence should come as a no-brainer for Tottenham transfer chief Fabio Paratici.

Described by ex-Spurs full-back Alan Hutton as an ‘incredible’ player who ‘massively fits the bill’ for Conte (Football Insider), the possible arrival of the 21-year-old could also help to fix a glaring issue with Spurs’ unbalanced homegrown quota.

Reports suggest that he is valued at around £20m, and while that could be viewed as a considerable investment for someone so young, we believe that a defender of his ilk may well be worth the gamble.

Tottenham pull out of Dybala race

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly decided to do a U-turn and not chase the signature of Juventus forward Paulo Dybala this summer, report Football.London.

The Lowdown: Dybala confirms Juventus exit

The 28-year-old first joined the Italian giants from Palermo back in 2015, but after making 292 senior appearances in that time, the striker recently confirmed that he would be leaving the Serie A outfit following the conclusion of the current season after a seven-year spell in Turin.

The Lilywhites previously attempted to bring Dybala to the Premier League in 2019 when former manager Mauricio Pochettino was in charge, but failed to get a deal over the line in time due to image rights issues.

As the 32-cap international will be available on a free transfer during the upcoming window, he has been strongly linked with a move to Spurs once again, but after a fresh update, it would appear as though that’s off the table.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Spurs end interest

In a huge update published by Football.London, the reliable Alasdair Gold reports that Tottenham are ‘not considering’ entering the race for Dybala as a result of Fabio Paratici not being ‘wholly convinced’ that their old target is the ‘right fit’.

The source further states that the director of football was a member of the hierarchy who tried to move Dybala on during his time working at Juventus, so it seems like Paratici has never been a big fan of the player.

The Verdict: A missed opportunity

Taking up the option not to pursue the £222k-per-week star, especially as someone who’s about to become a free agent, is surely a missed opportunity to seal an absolute bargain at N17.

The Argentine, labelled a ‘world class’ superstar by former Spurs man Paul Robinson, has made 21 goal contributions in just 38 outings across all competitions for Massimiliano Allegri’s side this season, as per Transfermarkt, and it’s hard to see why Antonio Conte wouldn’t want this type of prolific player in his starting XI.

Dybala would be the perfect candidate to provide some serious goalscoring competition for Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, but it looks as though the club have already made up their minds and will no doubt now be starting the hunt to find their new deputy for Kane.

In other news… a Spurs insider has dropped a huge transfer twist surrounding a first-team colossus.

Sunderland have a gem in Bennette

Sunderland have been rather prolific in recent years with their academy, producing a host of names who have gone on to perform both for them and at a much higher station.

Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford and just two who have established themselves as top-quality Premier League players, with the former captaining Liverpool to winning most trophies available to him.

However, another that could be destined for the very top is a young Costa Rican signed this summer, Jewison Bennette.

The 18-year-old speedster has already made one cameo for the Black Cats this season, with just an eight-minute appearance, however before that he had contributed to three goals in four Primera Division Apertura appearances.

He is clearly highly rated, with the left winger accumulating 36 senior appearances at such a young age.

Alex Neil had labelled the 5 foot 9 dynamo a “huge talent”, but it was Tony Mowbray who seems truly excited about the player, claiming: “He’s so fast and direct, he picks it up and drives with it, his feet are so fast. He shifts it from left to right and there’s no change, he shifts his shoulders and he’s past people.”

With all the attributes to succeed in English football, he is also said to have a wicked left foot and enjoys beating defenders and whipping crosses in.

Roy Miller, who faced England for Costa Rica in the 2014 World Cup had no qualms about how Bennette might take to English football:

“You can think that the English league is physical, with physical players. It remains for him to demonstrate (his abilities), just as he has demonstrated them with the national team, with his club team.

“Although there are very tall, physical players there, that doesn’t mean it will not go well for him. Hopefully he can take advantage of the opportunity.”

Not only does he have all the attributes, but with six caps already for his country he brings a sensational amount of experience for the Championship.

He is sure to be a success upon Wearside and seems like a truly exciting signing who can be the present and the future of the club.

Scenarios: How can India make it to the semi-finals?

They got the big win they needed against Sri Lanka. What next?

Shiva Jayaraman09-Oct-2024India have given their World Cup campaign a shot in the arm by registering an 82-run win over Sri Lanka. Their net run rate (NRR) had taken a beating after their 58-run loss to New Zealand in the opening game and hadn’t improved by much after a relatively close win against Pakistan. But after their win against Sri Lanka – their biggest in terms of runs at the T20 World Cup – it has leapfrogged from -1.217 to +0.576. While this doesn’t change the fact that they’ll have to beat Australia to give themselves the best chance to qualify for the last four, it should give them some breathing space if it comes down to NRR.The easiest path for India will be to beat Australia and hope both New Zealand and Pakistan lose at least one of their two remaining matches. India will then qualify on points without having to rely on NRR. India can also go through to the semis on points in the unlikely event that Australia lose both their remaining matches. In that event, only one other team between New Zealand and Pakistan can make it to six points. If India beat Australia in their last league game, a three-way tie with Australia and New Zealand on six points is a possibility. While India will do well to defeat the defending champions even by the smallest of margins, a narrow win for India will keep New Zealand interested. For example, if India win by a margin of just one run, New Zealand would need to win their two remaining matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan by a combined margin of approximately 38 runs to go past India’s NRR. If India win by a margin of 10 runs then this combined margin increases to approximately 48 runs. New Zealand have the advantage of playing the last league game, against Pakistan, and will know the exact equation by then.India could qualify with four points even if they lose to Australia provided both Pakistan and New Zealand lose at least one of their remaining matches. Obviously, India need to make sure that the margin of defeat is as small as possible. It will then come down to NRR between the teams. The 82-run win against Sri Lanka could come in very handy in that scenario.

Boucher's exit after eventful tenure leaves big hole in coaching staff

Under him, South Africa won as many series across formats as they lost, but his term will not be judged on numbers alone

Firdose Moonda14-Sep-2022It was always going to be messy. From the day Mark Boucher was appointed the national men’s head coach by his former captain and friend Graeme Smith, his tenure was tainted with allegations of favouritism. That, despite his status as one of the country’s most celebrated cricketers and, latterly, a successful coach. Now, as Boucher walks away from the job he did with varying degrees of success and into one with an IPL franchise, he remains an important figure in South African cricket. This isn’t a simple story because nothing about South Africa and its institutions is simple. You’ve heard this before (sorry) but it’s difficult to avoid filtering anything in South African society through the lens of race. Which is why, in analysing Boucher the coach, we have to consider that he is white and male and born at a time in South Africa (1976) when those were the two most important things to be. He went to an elite school, which put an emphasis on sport, which he was good at. He was picked for teams from age-group level, climbed the ranks and became South Africa’s best wicketkeeper in their best Test side, captained by Smith.Related

Mark Boucher to stand down as South Africa coach after T20 World Cup

CSA withdraws misconduct charges against Mark Boucher

Throughout, Boucher was known for being a bulldog: aggressive-looking, snappy, resilient, and fiercely loyal. To his team-mates, he was the glue that held them together. To the fans, he was respected, though not loved in the way someone like AB de Villiers was. When his career was ended by a freak injury in Taunton, there was sympathy but not a public outpouring of sadness. When he re-emerged as a coach, he seemed right at home. Boucher won five trophies in three seasons with Titans and there was talk that he may take over the national side one day.But Boucher was not really among the candidates to replace Ottis Gibson after the 2019 World Cup because no one, not even Cricket South Africa (CSA), knew what they wanted to do. At the time, CSA was being run – not especially well – by Thabang Moroe. He picked Enoch Nkwe, who had just completed his first season at the Lions franchise, where he won two of three tournaments as well as the inaugural Mzansi Super League. He was also the first Black African to be appointed as South Africa’s head coach. Nkwe took South Africa to India where they lost the Test series 3-0.By the time Boucher took over, Smith (white and male) had been appointed as director of cricket and Jacques Faul (white and male) was the interim CEO (Moroe was fired for misconduct) – this was seen eventually as a “white takeover” of the board.Temba Bavuma (right) said there had been more empathy within the squad in the wake of the SJN hearings•Ashley Vlotman/Gallo Images/Getty ImagesYou might conclude, of course, that the appointment of two white males should be less relevant than the fact they were two of the best names in South African cricket, and you wouldn’t be wrong. But with the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, Smith and Boucher were fated to be judged not only by their pedigree but by their whiteness. And in Nkwe, Boucher replaced someone who was black and more qualified. Nkwe did not have Boucher’s international career, so he upskilled with a Level 4 certificate. Boucher decided not to bother going beyond a Level 2 (granted to all former internationals), partly because CSA asked him to lecture, without pay, on the same Level 3 course he had been planning to do. As a small taster of the clashes to come, that was a spicy one.Boucher began as head coach in December 2019 to some outcry and relief. He recognised South Africa’s players were lagging behind technically. He had with him a diverse coaching staff, made up of Charl Langeveldt, Justin Ontong and later Justin Sammons. He also recruited consultants such as Jacques Kallis and Paul Harris (two other veterans of South Africa’s golden age who would face criticism for their whiteness), and then Neil McKenzie and Vincent Barnes.Collectively, that expertise brought South Africa four Test series wins out of eight, two ODI series wins out of eight and five T20I series wins out of 12. Overall, under Boucher, South Africa won as many series across formats as they lost – 11 – but his term will not be judged on numbers or race alone.Boucher had to cope with more off-field issues than most coaches, in particular the resurgence of BLM and the Covid-19 pandemic. The former prompted CSA to launch the Social Justice and Nation-Building hearings out of which Boucher didn’t come out too well, specifically when he was outed as one of the players in Paul Adams’ damning testimony. CSA was forced to act, seeking Boucher’s dismissal as coach and opening the door for those who were unhappy with the way Boucher had been appointed.Graeme Smith and Mark Boucher played 257 international games alongside each other for South Africa•PA Images via Getty ImagesBy the time the charges were dropped, the damage to Boucher’s relationship with the board was done. It prompted an avalanche of very public, very polarised opinion about Boucher: the team backed him (Test captain Dean Elgar spoke often of the unfairness of the coaching staff being criticised) and seemed to be improving under him; others could not see a future for someone who had admitted to racially discriminatory behaviour. There was no middle ground.Does this all sound exhausting? It must have been.It can’t have been easy for Boucher. And though Boucher knew his past behaviour was wrong and apologised in a written affidavit, he never appeared at the SJN. Whether he would have known and apologised without the hearings taking place, we’ll never know. As to whether he changed for the experience, we can judge from the current team who speak about an inclusive culture that accommodates everyone. On the face of it, South Africa are confronting their racial issues, openly and honestly. After all that, there was some cricket. Boucher was in charge of a team that had the same problems as when he started: the batting was brittle and wasn’t being given the support it needed.South Africa’s domestic teams play fewer first-class games now than two summers ago and the new SA20 will squeeze that further. South Africa’s national side will play fewer Tests in the next FTP. They may not automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup and instead of supporting their chance to get there, their own board has withdrawn them from matches that could assist them in qualification, in order to create a window for the SA20, the tournament South Africa needs to succeed. Essentially, Boucher works for an organisation that has had to sacrifice the international game he made his name in, for a lucrative league he has been offered a coaching role in. In some convoluted way, does all of this add up to his decision to quit? The task for the new head coach is far from straightforward, because the need to revive a team in transition remains secondary to the imperatives of transformation. The right candidate must not merely be an excellent coach but must understand that providing quality of opportunity isn’t simply about colouring by numbers. Foreign coaches, even those of colour such as Gibson, typically struggle with this.Whoever comes in cannot be after much money, either. CSA is not flush with cash and the salary of their head coach will not match the sums available in the IPL or county scene. Boucher himself will earn more from his SA20 stint of a few weeks than for a whole year as national head coach.Who would want it? Warriors coach Robin Peterson and South Africa A coach Malibongwe Maketa are the frontrunners. Lance Klusener, who is currently Zimbabwe’s batting coach, is a strong candidate who might come into the conversation, as might Ashwell Prince and Vernon Philander.CSA could also go knocking on the doors of a few former incumbents. One of Gary Kirsten, Russell Domingo, Graham Ford, Adi Birrell (who worked as Domingo’s assistant) may be coaxed into an interim position, while CSA works out the process of finding someone more permanent. One thing is for certain: this time they will strive to do it right. The job will be advertised, candidates will be interviewed, t’s crossed and i’s dotted to avoid the chaos that clouded Boucher’s tenure. Because they cannot go through another mess like this one.
