INEOS can fund Elliot Anderson move by offloading Man Utd's "best player"

Manchester United’s supporters have been largely left frustrated over the last decade, with the club unable to achieve any sustained success since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The Scotsman decided to call it a day at the end of the 2012/13 season, with the Red Devils yet to claim Premier League glory under the guidance of any other manager.

Ruben Amorim is the latest manager to try his luck at Old Trafford, with the hierarchy already backing him in his quest for success during his tenure in the role.

He’s already spent upwards of £220m since his appointment last November, with the majority of his spending being directed into the final third of the squad.

However, with January rapidly approaching, the board have shifted their attention to the midfield department, which has led to a whole host of players being touted for a move to join the club.

The latest on United’s move to land Elliot Anderson

Over the last couple of weeks, United have been hugely touted with various moves for a number of central midfielders to help bolster Amorim’s squad in the second half of the season.

The likes of Adam Wharton, Joao Gomes and Ederson have all been linked with moves, but none of the aforementioned talents appear to be their main target.

Such a luxury has fallen into the hands of Elliot Anderson, with the Nottingham Forest star seemingly being the Red Devils’ number one target this January.

The 23-year-old has been in remarkable form for Sean Dyche’s side this season, leading to the youngster becoming a regular starter in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

It’s been reported that Amorim’s side are willing to pay £60m for the signature of the midfielder in the upcoming window to try and solve their issue at the heart of the squad.

However, such a deal could well be rejected out of hand, with Forest wanting at least £100m for their star man, who has three and a half years left on his current deal.

Anderson also has no release clause in his current deal at the City Ground, which puts Dyche’s men in full control over negotiations when it comes down to conducting a transfer.

If Amorim’s men are to land the Englishman this window, the £100m deal would see a new club-record being paid for his signature – surpassing the £89m paid for Paul Pogba nearly a decade ago.

The player who Amorim could sell to fund the Anderson deal

£100m is a mammoth sum, even in today’s market, but Anderson’s stats from the current campaign showcase why he’s so highly-rated by his current employers.

He’s ranked top of numerous different categories across the Premier League this season, ranging from touches of the ball to possession won for his side.

His tally of 8.6 progressive passes per 90 highlights his phenomenal ball-playing ability, but it’s his work out of possession that could be the selling point to Amorim and the board.

A real ball-winner is what the club have lacked in recent times, with the Englishman’s dominance in winning the ball back seemingly what’s prompted the recent interest.

However, after splashing around £200m on new additions in the summer, it remains to be seen how much the board are willing to spend in the upcoming January window.

As a result, numerous players may have to be offloaded from the current squad, with Kobbie Mainoo just one star who could be sold by Amorim.

Such a sentence would have been absurd 12 months ago, but the midfielder has simply been unable to showcase his talents since the arrival of the 40-year-old.

In 2025/26 alone, the 20-year-old has featured just eight times in the league, but none of which have come from a starting role – restricting him to just 170 minutes of action to date.

He’s since dropped behind the experienced Casemiro in the pecking order, with the manager evidently favouring the Brazilian over the academy sensation.

However, it could get worse for Mainoo in the near future, with the Red Devils having youngsters such as Sekou Kone who could also rise above him in Amorim’s plans.

Anderson’s arrival would also do just that, potentially seeing Mainoo become surplus to requirements at Old Trafford – something which is a real travesty.

Just a couple of years ago, he was scoring key goals in FA Cup finals and local derbies, even leading to journalist Liam Canning labelling him as the club’s “best player”.

However, it’s evident the boss doesn’t have as much faith in the player as many outsiders do, which could force the youngster to move on to reach his full potential elsewhere.

It’s likely he would still command a hefty fee should he be sold in January, with such funds potentially playing a key role in any pursuit of Anderson in the weeks ahead.

The downfall of Mainoo has been truly devastating for the fanbase to witness, especially after the joy he gave them when he breezed into the first-team setup as an 18-year-old.

However, it’s crucial the club cash in on him before his value declines further, with the board needing to make huge calls if they are to land the Forest star or keep the academy graduate happy at the club.

Willy Adames Agrees to Seven-Year Contract With Giants

The San Francisco Giants have found their long-term answer at shortstop.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Saturday, citing sources, that the Giants agreed to sign shortstop Willy Adames to a seven-year contract worth $182 million, pending a physical.

It is the largest contract handed out in franchise history, marking Buster Posey's first big move since taking the president of baseball operations role in October. Adames's deal, which includes a $22 million signing bonus, tops Posey's nine-year contract extension worth $167 million that he signed as a 26-year-old catcher back in 2013.

Adames, 29, hit the open market after spending four years apiece with the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays. He was traded to the Brewers in May 2021 and developed into one of the game's best sluggers at the position, mashing at least 25 homers in each of the last four years.

In 161 games with Milwaukee last season, Adames batted .251/.331/.462 while setting career bests in just about every offensive category, including homers (32), doubles (33), RBIs (112) and stolen bases (21).

Adames now holds the keys to shortstop at Oracle Park, a position San Francisco thought it filled in free agency two years ago. In December 2022, the Giants agreed to sign shortstop Carlos Correa to a 13-year contract worth $350 million, only to back out of the deal on the day of his scheduled introductory press conference due to concerns that arose over his physical.

Adames's deal is currently pending a physical, too, of course.

While Correa enters the 2025 campaign on the third season of his six-year contract he signed with the Minnesota Twins, it appears the Giants have finally found their cornerstone shortstop. And Posey has proved he can do what former executive Farhan Zaidi struggled to accomplish—bringing a star to the Bay Area on a long-term deal.

Mets Come Alive in NLCS Game 5 to Beat Dodgers, Stave Off Elimination

The first few minutes of the New York Mets' clash against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the NLCS did not go favorably for the home team. But the rest of the game did.

Mets lefthander David Peterson started Game 5 by surrendering a single to Shohei Ohtani and a double to Mookie Betts, bringing the heart of the Dodgers' order up with no outs and two runners in scoring positions. One swing of the bat could end the Mets' season.

But just when it seemed New York was flirting with disaster, Peterson buckled down and retired the next three batters to get out of the jam. Pete Alonso answered with a three-run blast in the bottom half of the first, and the Mets never looked back in their 12–6 win.

Let the Grimace costumes in the stands rejoice: There will be a Game 6 at Dodger Stadium.

Here are three takeaways from the Mets' win in Game 5:

Polar Bear power

Don't bet against Alonso in an win-or-go-home game.

With the Mets facing elimination Friday night for the first time since Alonso's game-winning homer in the ninth inning of Game 3 in the wild-card round, the 29-year-old slugger stepped up again. He clobbered a 432-foot tater in the first inning—the Mets' longest postseason homer in the Statcast era—to open a 3–0 lead. He went 2-for-4 on the day with four runs scored and three RBIs.

Alonso, set to be a free agent this offseason, might play his final game in a Mets uniform at some point this fall. But Friday night was not that game.

Mets don't mess around with bullpen

Once leading by as many as eight runs, the Mets saw their lead get cut to 10–6 in the sixth inning, as Andy Pages homered twice and Mookie Betts found the bleachers on a solo shot. After a scoreless seventh inning, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza didn't want to tempt fate.

As the Dodgers prepared to send Pages, Shohei Ohtani and Betts to the plate in the eighth, Mendoza called upon his best arm out of the bullpen in closer Edwin Diaz to finish off a five-run game.

Diaz struck out Pages and Ohtani, and got Betts to ground out for a 1-2-3 eighth. And even though the Mets scored an insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth, Mendoza stuck with Diaz in the ninth, and it paid off with a scoreless frame to close out the win.

Dave Roberts's risky decision

Dodgers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty allowed six baserunners and one run over the first two innings, and he ran into trouble again in the third by walking the first two batters he faced.

Instead of calling upon his bullpen to keep the 3–1 game in reach, Roberts opted to keep Flaherty in the game. Three pitches later, he served up a two-run double to Starling Marte, followed by three more hits and three additional runs.

By the time Flaherty exited the game, the Mets held an 8–1 lead, putting the game pretty much out of reach, even for the Dodgers' explosive offense.

Los Angeles is expected to roll out a bullpen game for Game 6 on Sunday.

Porter six-for trumps Brookes onslaught as Essex seal first win

Seamer takes three of final four wickets but not before tenth-wicket pair had given Worcestershire hope

Jamie Porter helped wrap up a nervy first Rothesay County Championship victory of the season for Essex on the final day against Worcestershire with the 22nd five-wicket haul of his career. The 31-year-old pace bowler, the leading wicket-taker in Division One last season, added three more wickets to the three he had taken the day before as Worcestershire were bowled out for 266, 28 runs short of their target. Porter finished with 6 for 52 from 24.4 overs. However, the victory was not achieved without some belated anxiety. The 23-year-old allrounder Ethan Brookes, patience personified earlier in his innings, threw caution to the wind when the ninth wicket went down and launched a one-man pyrotechnic show that included seven sixes in a scintillating 88 from 105 balls before becoming Porter’s final victim.”When we got them two wickets down early on I thought we’d get it done before the second new ball,” Porter said. “But that was one hell of an innings by Ethan Brookes. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt about Worcestershire, it’s they don’t give in. They push you all the way to the end. So a lot of credit to them to a) get into the position they were at this morning, where it felt we were slight favourites, and b) literally from the jaws of defeat to put themselves in a position where they almost won it.”With Jacob Duffy blocking at the other end for 0 not out off 12, Brookes helped Worcestershire add 64 for the tenth wicket. His dismissal was not without controversy, too, as Brookes initially stood his ground after Porter rushed in to take a caught-and-bowled right under the batter’s nose.”He was within his rights to question the wicket, but I was 100 percent certain I’d taken it,” Porter said. “I’ve never claimed a catch that wasn’t clean in my career, not that I’ve been in that position too often. But I’m 100 percent certain it carried and the umpire at point confirmed it.”He’s [Brookes] obviously disappointed because he felt like he deserved to be on the right end of that result, and I agree the way he played he did deserve to be on the winning side. But that’s the way it goes.”Both teams arrived on day four believing they not only could win but would win. Worcestershire needed 110 more runs and Essex required four wickets. They also needed to get it completed before forecast rain arrived during the afternoon. That Essex had dug themselves out of a hole after being dismissed for 179 in the first innings and being able to set a target of 295, was largely due to Paul Walter’s century, the highest score on a hybrid wicket that was a seamer’s paradise. To prove that point, Porter extracted some extra bounce from the pitch to claim his fourth wicket of the innings with the second ball of his second over of an overcast morning. Worcestershire had only added a quickly scampered single to their overnight 185 for 6 when Matthew Waite played on to depart for 27 after a painstaking two-hour stay.Worcestershire were still 103 runs away from celebrating their own first win of the campaign when Tom Taylor got a thick edge to another lifting delivery from Porter and was caught at first slip by Walter. Kasun Rajitha, replacing Porter in the attack, then knocked out Ben Allison’s leg stump to leave Worcestershire on the precipice.Once the game was all over bar the shouting, Brookes decided to have some fun, smashing Simon Harmer for six over cow corner and then scooping and sweeping Rajitha for maximums off successive balls. His fourth six, again off Harmer and over Snater’s head on the square-leg boundary, took him to a 73-ball fifty.Another six, his fifth in five overs, landed in the Tom Pearce Stand at the River End before Porter returned to take the new-ball with Worcestershire still requiring 53 to win.A sixth six, this one hit back over Snater’s head, brought up the fifty partnership for the last wicket, in 38 balls, of which Duffy had contributed exactly nought. Even Porter came in for some treatment when Brookes deposited him over fine leg for six No. 7. But next ball, Brookes lobbed the ball up and Porter dived forward to claim the catch.Worcestershire head coach, Alan Richardson, said: “It was a remarkable innings from Ethan. It just showed the skill level he has and the ability. It was amazing to watch from a position where for love and money it didn’t look like we were going to get so close. For him to produce something like that should give him a great deal of confidence.”The coaching staff here have known Ethan for a long time so when he left Warwickshire we knew there was something there. He got his maiden first-class hundred against Hampshire last year on a spin-friendly wicket was also an amazing innings, and very similar to that in the tempo he played. We believe we’ve got an exciting cricketer.”Yes, he did throw the kitchen sink at a few but the way he conducted himself and the fact Jacob [Duffy] faced so few balls was real testament to an intellect cricketer, someone who knew how to go about it. You talk about throwing caution to the wind, I think there was an element of freedom about how he went about it. He’s an excellent cricketer.”

Forget Sesko: Amorim already has his own Haaland in Man Utd's "machine"

While Ruben Amorim has already settled one debate by confirming that Altay Bayindir will start for Manchester United in the derby, there is still a decision to be made at the top end of the pitch.

With Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount sidelined, the Portuguese coach will have to configure a new-look forward line at the Etihad, with it yet to be seen whether this will mark the occasion for Benjamin Sesko’s first Premier League start.

In truth, it’s been an auspicious beginning in a United shirt for the £74m Slovenian, with four games having come and gone without a goal, having notably produced an agonising miss in the last knockings of the Carabao Cup exit at Grimsby.

While hampered by cramp in the subsequent penalty shootout, the sight of the 22-year-old taking the tenth penalty on the night did have alarm bells ringing. Amorim needed a new centre-forward to hit the ground running, but Sesko is yet to catch fire.

The Red Devils can ill-afford a Rasmus Hojlund repeat, with the young Dane – now shipped off to Napoli – having endured an injury-hit start in Manchester, while his first top-flight goal wasn’t secured until the Boxing Day thriller with Aston Villa.

Unfortunately, the ex-Atalanta man was unable to prove United’s answer to Erling Haaland, with the early signs suggesting that perhaps Sesko may not either?

How Sesko compares to Hojlund pre-United

It is far too early to be writing off United’s newest centre-forward addition, not least amid his bid to get up to speed fitness-wise, although it remains tricky to shake that nagging feeling that the Old Trafford hierarchy have repeated their prior mistake.

Indeed, £64m was splashed out on a 20-year-old Hojlund back in the summer of 2023, with the young marksman arriving after netting just ten times during his solitary campaign in Bergamo.

Formerly on the books at FC Copenhagen, the youngster’s most fruitful spell had come in Austria with Sturm Graz, with 12 goals scored in just 21 games for the Bundesliga outfit.

The parallels with Sesko are certainly evident, with the 6 foot 4 speedster making his own mark in Austrian football at both FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg, scoring 51 goals in 123 games combined for those two sides.

In a similar vein to Haaland, he then traded Salzburg for the Bundesliga in 2023, with 39 goals in 87 games for Leipzig proving enough to warrant United’s recent summer investment.

The comparison to Haaland – and Hojlund – as a towering young striker who has navigated Austrian and German football is clear, although the City star is undoubtedly on a different level.

Indeed, the Norwegian’s time at Salzburg yielded 29 goals in just 27 games. In Germany, meanwhile, he scored 86 times in just 89 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

Simply a freak of a footballer, the 25-year-old now boasts 127 goals in 149 games at the Etihad, with Sesko barely even close to such a level. In truth, few players are.

That being said, Amorim may well have his own clinical killer to call upon in attack, with new man Bryan Mbeumo showcasing shades of a Haaland quality in recent times.

How Bryan Mbeumo is emulating Haaland

Haaland, across the last three years, has been a menace in the derby, scoring six times in just eight meetings with United to date.

Hopefully, Mbeumo – signed from Brentford on an initial £65m deal – can reach similar heights, having already begun to fire with two goals in his last two games for the Old Trafford outfit.

The latest strike, in the dramatic 3-2 win over Burnley, was every bit a Haaland goal, with the left-footer making space for himself inside the area, before coolly converting from Diogo Dalot’s pullback. Such composure has rarely been seen by a United forward of late.

Such a strong start to life in Manchester, represented in him claiming the club’s Player of the Month award, should be no surprise considering his exploits back in west London, with the Cameroonian speedster notching a remarkable 20 league goals for the Bees in 2024/25.

Only Haaland (22), Alexander Isak (23) and Mo Salah (29) scored more.

As noted by Sky Sports, the former Troyes speedster is actually even more of a game-changing presence than the likes of Haaland, having relished his own talismanic role under Thomas Frank.

Indeed, his 2024/25 total of 27 goals and assists contributed directly to 22 points for his side. For comparison, Haaland’s 25 goal contributions helped to seal 17 points for the Citizens.

Described as an “output machine” by content creator Ronaldo Brown, Mbeumo also outperformed his xG by 7.7 last term, indicating just what an elite, unique finisher he truly is.

While Pep Guardiola and co have had Haaland to rely on to deliver the goods in recent times, it has been a long while since United could hang their hat on a clinical attacker.

The last player to score 20 league goals for the club? Robin van Persie in 2012/13.

In Mbeumo, however, things might be about to change. If Sesko doesn’t deliver in the near future, at least Amorim can turn to his Haaland-esque, Premier League-proven option instead.

Fahima-Ferdus' achievement 'is inspiring for the team', says captain Sultana

“I felt that I would pick up three wickets today – I felt I had more wicket-taking options,” Fahima Khatun says

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Apr-2025Nigar Sultana scored an 80-ball 101. Bangladesh put up their highest score in ODIs – 271. They then bowled Thailand out for 93 to record their biggest win in terms of runs in the format – 178. The most remarkable event in the win in the World Cup qualifying match in Lahore, though, was Fahima Khatun and Jannatul Ferdus, the spin twins, picking up five wickets each, the first time it has happened in women’s ODI cricket. In fact, it’s the second such occurrence in all ODI cricket – Greg Chappell and Gary Cosier had done it for Australia against England in Birmingham in 1977.”Such a record, where two bowlers pick up five-wicket hauls in an innings, is a remarkable achievement,” Sultana said in a video released by the BCB. “Their contribution today is inspiring for the team. I am hoping they continue to do similar things in the rest of the games.”Related

Six teams, two World Cup spots on offer, many intrigues

Sultana ton and Fahima, Ferdus five-fors give Bangladesh big win

In another BCB video, where legspinner Fahima, who took 5 for 21 in 8.5 overs, and Ferdus, the offspinner who returned 5 for 7 in five overs, chat with each other, Fahima said, “Of course it’s reason to be very happy. I have had the opportunity to do this before, pick up five wickets in an innings, but I haven’t been able to do it, so this is very pleasing.”I must say that the end I was bowling from, when I started bowling, I felt that I would pick up three wickets today. I felt I had more wicket-taking options. Fortunately, it worked out.”In an ODI career that’s worth 45 matches now, Fahima had two three-wicket hauls but never a five-for. In T20Is, she has one four-for. For Ferdus, playing just her third ODI and seventh game for Bangladesh overall, it was well beyond anything she had achieved – the five wickets took her tally to eight, across formats.”This is the first time I have picked up five wickets for Bangladesh,” Ferdus said. “Of course, it’s very special. The first time is something to remember for the rest of my life. It will be a wonderful memory. I started bowling late in this game, so I didn’t think there was any opportunity to pick up five wickets. But I was trying to maintain the process, and fortunately it worked out.”Fahima had three wickets to her name – and figures of 5-1-8-3 – when Ferdus came on to bowl in the 20th over of Thailand’s chase. Ferdus’ first over was a double-wicket maiden. Fahima came back soon enough, and they had four wickets each soon after. Ferdus got to her milestone first, and Fahima got there when she finished off the match.”At what point did you feel you could pick up five wickets?” Fahima, the senior pro, asked Ferdus.

” It’s my first century in ODI cricket, but there was no such target in my mind. The target was to take the team score to 250-plus. So, when [Hoque and [Sharmin] were batting, I felt that when I go out, I should also score at a good strike rate and score quickly”Nigar Sultana

“The thought had never crossed my mind. I was trying to follow the plan of bowling wicket to wicket. And, fortunately, I was successful,” Ferdus replied. The achievement of the two spinners overshadowed, somewhat at least, a remarkable innings from Sultana, the Bangladesh captain, where she walked out in the 28th over, but still managed to get to the three-figure mark. Sharmin Akhter, the No. 3 batter who was part of two century partnerships, ended on 94 not out, while Fargana Hoque, the opener, scored 53.”It’s our first win of the tournament, and I am very happy to have contributed to it,” Sultana said. “It’s my first century in ODI cricket, but there was no such target in my mind. The target was to take the team score to 250-plus. So, when [Hoque and [Sharmin] were batting, I felt that when I go out, I should also score at a good strike rate and score quickly. So that the batters to follow are in a position to take Bangladesh past 250. There was the opportunity, we grabbed it, so we got a good total.”The margin of victory has put Bangladesh at the top of the points table after all teams have played a match each. They next play Ireland on Sunday.

As exciting as Gyokeres: Arsenal close in on sealing blockbuster signing

After three successive years of finishing in second place in the Premier League, Arsenal fans will undoubtedly be getting tired of their inability to end their drought without a league title.

The Gunners have now gone over two decades without a Premier League triumph, with patience potentially running thin among the fanbase should Mikel Arteta fall at the final hurdle once more.

The hierarchy have already backed the manager in his quest to reach the next level at the Emirates, spending upwards of £200m on new additions, subsequently improving various areas of the pitch.

Arsenal manager MikelArteta

Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi have already been added to the midfield department, adding key depth after various departures earlier this summer.

However, despite the huge funds already splashed on various new additions, countless other options are still being considered by the club in an attempt to further their ambitions of finishing top of the pile.

The latest on Arsenal’s hunt for new additions this summer

Despite the addition of Noni Madueke this summer, Arsenal are targeting the addition of Real Madrid star Rodrygo in an attempt to bolster the attacking department.

However, any deal for the Brazilian would see them face competition from various sides, such as Manchester City and North London rivals Tottenham, for his signature.

He’s not the only attacker currently in their sights between now and the end of the window, with Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze also high up on their shortlist, according to one Spanish outlet.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo

They claim that an agreement is close between the Gunners and the Eagles over a ‘blockbuster’ £55m deal that would see the 27-year-old move to the Emirates ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

It also states that Oliver Glasner’s side are resigned to losing the England international this summer, but a deal will have to be put on hold until his side land a replacement.

Why Arsenal’s latest target would be as exciting as Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres is undoubtedly Arsenal’s most high-profile addition during the current window, which is no surprise given his goal tally at Sporting CP.

The Swedish international netted 97 goals in his 102 appearances, having the ability to transform the club’s form in the final third if he can replicate such levels in England.

However, he will have a huge price tag to live up to, after the hierarchy forked out £63.5m, including add-ons, to secure the services of the 27-year-old this summer.

The fanbase are already all aboard the hype train of Gyokeres, after the forward netted his first goal for the club in the recent pre-season triumph against LaLiga side Athletic Club.

However, despite the recent excitement around the move, the club could land a star just as impressive as the Swede should they complete a deal for Eze in the coming weeks.

The 27-year-old would provide a versatile all-round option in the final third, able to feature out wide or in the number ten position – not to mention his experience in England’s top-flight.

His stats from the most recent campaign highlight the ability he possesses in the final third, able to create for others whilst also having the tools to thrive individually.

Eze, who’s been labelled “sensational” by talkSPORT’s Rory Jennings, completed 2.4 take-ons per 90, whilst making 1.7 carries into the final third – having the tools to offer fresh impetus to the side in attacking areas.

He also registered 16 combined goals and assists in England’s top-flight last season, having the tools to provide an end product to his mazy runs into the opposition’s penalty area.

Such tallies highlight his ability to provide for others whilst being able to find the net himself, which is hardly a surprise given his tally of 3.5 shots per 90 – which ranks him within the top 6% of all players in the division.

If he can replicate the levels he’s produced at Selhurst Park in recent times, it would be a superb addition that would further improve the options at the manager’s disposal.

The prospect of Eze linking up with Gyokeres in attacking areas is one to be excited about, potentially catapulting the club to new levels of success in the near future.

Wife Prithi's 'love letter from a fan girl' to Ashwin

“Live life on your terms, make space for those extra calories, make time for your family, make time to do absolutely nothing”

“It has been a blurry two days for me. I have been thinking about what I can say.. Do I put this down as a tribute to my all time favorite cricketer ? Maybe I’ll just take the partner angle? Or maybe a love letter from a fan girl? I guess this is a little bit of all of it.”When I saw Ashwins PC, I thought of small and big moments. Many many memories over the last 13-14 years. The big wins , the MOS awards, the quiet silence in our room after an intense game, the sound of the shower running for much longer than usual on some evenings post play , the scratch of pencil over paper as he scribbled thoughts down, the constant streaming of footage videos when he is making a game plan, the calm of meditative breathing before leaving for each game, certain songs playing on repeat while he unwinds.. The times we weeped in joy – after the CT final, after the MCG win, after the Sydney draw, The Gabba win, after making a comeback in T20s…the times we sat in silence and the times when we had our hearts broken.Related

R Ashwin: the unlikely superstar who is never quiet

Sidharth Monga: Ashwin went looking for problems to solve

“Dear Ashwin, from not knowing how to put a kit bag together to following you to stadiums all over the world, rooting for you, watching you and learning from you, it has been an absolute pleasure. The world you introduced me to gave me the privilege to watch and enjoy a sport that I love from close quarters. It also showed me how much passion, hardwork and discipline is needed to keep your head above water. And sometimes even that is not enough. I remember us talking about why you, R Ashwin, had to do all of this and a lot more to even stay relevant in the scheme of things. How awards, the best of stats, the POMs, the accolades, the records didn’t matter if you didn’t sharpen your skill sets constantly and did not put in the work. Sometimes, nothing is enough. As you end your wonderful international run, I only want to tell you that it’s all good.It is all going to be good.It is time to set the burden of being you down. Live life on your terms, make space for those extra calories, make time for your family, make time to do absolutely nothing, share memes all day, create a new bowling variation, bug our kids out of their minds. Just do it all.”
