Man Utd have homegrown Wharton in 18-year-old who's lighting up Carrington

For a club once blessed with the likes of Paul Scholes and Roy Keane, the midfield unit at Manchester United has now long been a cause for concern, amid a string of errant additions in that department.

Since the days of Scholes himself, or even Michael Carrick more recently, the Red Devils have seen so much upheaval in the centre of the park, with perhaps the longest stable pairing of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era emerging as Fred and Scott McTominay – two players dubbed “not good enough” by Keane.

£89m was dished out on Paul Pogba. £40m was splashed out on Donny van de Beek. An ageing Casemiro, meanwhile, joined for a fee that could reach £70m, having since been joined at Old Trafford by fellow South American, Manuel Ugarte, on a £50m deal.

So much investment, yet such little reward, with Ruben Amorim left with a squad so ill-suited to his 3-4-2-1 system, having yet to settle on a first-choice partner to everpresent skipper, Bruno Fernandes, in that midfield two.

There is perhaps a sense that United will live to regret this summer’s recruitment decisions, having gone all in on a new-look forward line of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, albeit while neglecting to strengthen in the engine room.

While the INEOS hierarchy flirted with a £100m plus move for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, no such deal was struck, with the recent suggestions indicating that the club might now have turned their attention to another Premier League sensation – Adam Wharton.

The latest on Man Utd's interest in Adam Wharton

It has become a common theme of the last decade or so for United to have hesitated over moving for a player in their youth, only to then be forced to pay over the odds for that talent later down the line.

Indeed, the Red Devils had come close to prising a teenage Moises Caicedo from his native Ecuador for a measly fee of just £4m, albeit with a complication surrounding his representatives seeing the midfielder move to the Amex instead. Now he’s the “best” midfielder in the Premier League, according to Gary Neville.

Even this summer’s marquee £74m arrival, Sesko, was offered to United for just a fraction of that cost at £2.5m, back in 2019, although with the powers that be again spurning that opportunity.

A repeat scenario appears to have occurred with regard to Wharton, with respected journalist Andy Mitten having revealed that the Old Trafford side were offered the chance to sign the England international prior to his exit from Blackburn Rovers, only to have misgivings over the optics of signing an inexperienced figure from the Championship.

The now 21-year-old ultimately joined current side Crystal Palace for a fee rising to £22m back in February 2024, since enjoying a meteoric rise that includes earning a place in that summer’s Euro 2024 squad, while also playing his part as the Eagles romped to FA Cup glory last term.

While yet to truly establish himself at international level, the silky left-footer is one of the top-flight’s brightest talents, with reports over the summer indicating that he was deemed a viable alternative to Baleba amid United’s midfield search.

The latest claim is that Amorim and co could even look to lodge a £60m bid for the youngster in 2026, albeit with prior reports outlining that the Conference League outfit would be looking for more than £100m for their prized possession.

Although Wharton’s familiarity with playing in a midfield pairing would be beneficial, whether he is worth such an extreme outlay remains to be seen. Might Amorim consider looking to the academy instead?

Why Jack Fletcher can be Man Utd's own Wharton

The lack of academy promotion has been a glaring issue in the Portuguese’s tenure thus far, with the 40-year-old perhaps sharing the view of Sir Jim Ratcliffe that the youth ranks have “really slipped” of late.

While the ex-Sporting CP boss did memorably name eight teenagers on the bench for the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in February, amid a first-team injury crisis, only Chido Obi, Harry Amass and Tyler Fredricson have debuted during his tenure.

With the midfield department looking so short of depth in the senior set-up, however, with Kobbie Mainoo rounding off the quartet of Casemiro, Fernandes and Ugarte, that is certainly one area of the pitch where in-house reinforcements could be needed.

There are high hopes for Sekou Kone, signed for just £1m last summer, although in terms of producing a homegrown Wharton, it is 18-year-old Jack Fletcher who undoubtedly fits the bill.

Son of ex-United star and current U18s coach, Darren, the teenage playmaker joined the club from rivals Manchester City alongside his twin brother Tyler back in 2023, representing a real coup for those at Old Trafford.

While still yet to make his senior debut, Jack – who turns out for England at youth level – was part of the matchday squad for that night away at Spurs earlier this year, having featured on the bench for five league games in total in 2024/25.

An elegant left-footer, in the mould of Wharton, Fletcher’s brief promotion was just reward for a fine season all-round in the academy set-up, having provided 15 goals and assists in 22 recorded games across all fronts, as per Transfermarkt.

The highlight of those involvements undoubtedly came in the EFL Trophy away at Barnsley, with the 5 foot 11 midfielder scoring twice to complete a remarkable comeback for United’s U21 side, including netting an outrageous strike from range on the volley.

The current campaign has seen Fletcher flit between a midfield role and a left-back berth, although he has still scored twice already in all competitions, representing a creative, forward-thinking outlet wherever he is deployed on the pitch.

Despite his recent full-back switch pointing to a potential future at wing-back in Amorim’s side, it is as a left-sided central midfielder where Fletcher is likely to flourish, with analyst Ben Mattinson suggesting that he has “everything you’d want” for that latter role.

A player who “glides around the pitch with elegance and power”, according to Mattinson, the teen’s likeness to Wharton is evident to see, with United likely to save themselves a huge outlay if they do look to those at Carrington instead.

Having already missed their chance with Wharton in the past, perhaps the Red Devils should view the Palace man as a ship that has sailed. They already have their own future midfield star in Fletcher anyway.

Saved by Martinelli: Arteta must drop Arsenal star who lost 100% of duels

Arsenal secured a phenomenal last-gasp point against Manchester City at the Emirates this afternoon, highlighting the title credentials the Gunners possess.

Mikel Arteta’s side looked set to fall to defeat against Pep Guardiola’s side, but the 93rd-minute strike from Gabriel Martinelli secured a vital point in their hunt for Premier League title glory.

Such a result maintained the club’s unbeaten record in the 2025/26 campaign, but has seen them fall a couple of points behind Liverpool at the top of the table.

However, given the circumstances around the late equaliser, the result will certainly feel like it’s a point gained rather than two dropped – especially after it kept their unbeaten start intact.

Such a result will undoubtedly highlight to Arteta the changes he needs to make going forward, with one player deserving of a recall to the starting eleven in the near future.

Gabriel Martinelli’s heroics against Manchester City

Over the last couple of months, Martinelli has come into huge question for his lack of impact at Arsenal – subsequently leading to the huge investment over the summer.

However, the Brazilian has proved some of his doubters wrong over recent days, producing some impressive displays even before his cameo against Guardiola’s side.

He scored off the bench against Atlético Bilbao on Tuesday night, before doing the same again this afternoon – staking his claim for a regular first-team starting role again.

The 24-year-old only managed five touches of the ball after being brought on for the remaining 10 minutes, but it was his first time finish which was the decisive one.

Martinelli subsequently completed 100% of the passes he attempted and placed 100% of his shots on target, further highlighting the impressive cameo he produced off the bench.

Despite the showing of the Brazilian, one other player failed to deliver at the Emirates, with Arteta needing to take action and drop him from the side in their next outing.

The Arsenal player who needs to be dropped after City

The draw may give reasons to be positive for the weeks ahead, but it can’t gloss over the issues that arose in the early stages – most notably in the first half of the contest.

Arsenal were on the back foot, subsequently going a goal down after Erling Haaland’s strike, but were unable to break down the Citizens, given their low defensive line.

Arteta made a mistake in not starting an attacking midfielder, leaving Eberechi Eze on the substitutes bench and deciding to operate with Mikel Merino alongside Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice.

He also started with Noni Madueke off the right-hand side once again, but it was an afternoon to forget for the Englishman, as he failed to have the desired impact.

The 23-year-old has been filling the void after Bukayo Saka’s injury, but he was replaced by the aforementioned star at the break upon his return to first-team action.

However, his withdrawal from the contest was certainly warranted, with his underlying figures highlighting how dismal his showing was in North London today.

Madueke only managed 32 touches of the ball, missing a big chance in the process, and often being wasteful with the chances that were presented his way in the final third.

He also failed to complete any of the dribbles he attempted, whilst also losing 100% of the duels he entered – often being dominated by young full-back Nico O’Reilly.

The winger also registered five crosses, but not one of them found a player in red, subsequently achieving a 0% success rate – further showcasing his lack of positive impact.

As a result of his showing, Madueke was handed a measly 6/10 match rating by GOAL’s Sean Walsh – topping off what was a dismal afternoon for the £50m addition.

After such a showing, Arteta needs to drop the attacker from his starting eleven, with Saka needing to come back into the fold after his return from injury.

However, the biggest talking point will be Martinelli after his late goal, with the Brazilian undoubtedly saving the day in what was a pretty lacklustre showing at the Emirates.

Tottenham now agree deal to sign £50m star, he's jetting in for a medical

Tottenham Hotspur have now agreed a deal to sign a “remarkable” £50m star, who is now jetting into London to complete his medical.

Tottenham set for busy transfer deadline day

Having finally managed to get a deal for an attacking midfielder over the line last week, with Xavi Simons arriving from RB Leipzig, Thoma Frank is now looking to strengthen multiple other areas of his squad on transfer deadline day.

In terms of new defensive options, Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji and Liverpool’s Joe Gomez have emerged as potential targets, although it remains to be seen whether the Reds are willing to sell the Englishman, having called off a move to AC Milan, while Akanji himself could be heading to Italy to sign for Inter.

At the opposite end of the pitch, Spurs may feel a need to bring in a new forward, having drawn a blank in their most recent game, losing 1-0 against AFC Bournemouth in what was a disappointing display, recording one of their lowest xGs in recent memory.

As such, it may be a relief to hear that Tottenham have now agreed a deal to sign a new forward, with Randal Kolo-Muani set to sign on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, according to a report from The Sun.

Kolo-Muani is now set to jet into London to undergo a medical, before completing a move to north London, in what will be a straight loan move, which does not include an obligation or option to buy.

Tottenham frontrunners to sign "perfect" £9m+ a year star with Kolo Muani

It could be a busy final few hours for Spurs.

1 ByCharlie Smith Sep 1, 2025 "Remarkable" Kolo-Muani could be exactly what Tottenham need

Signing the PSG forward on a permanent basis would be a costly operation, with the French club thought to be looking to receive £50m+, whereas bringing him in on loan makes the move very low-risk, given that he is proven at the top level.

While the 26-year-old has been unable to force his way into Luis Enrique’s plans, he performed very well on loan at Juventus last season, chipping in with eight goals and one assist in 16 Serie A outings.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt man also impressed considerably during his time in the Bundesliga, with Lothar Matthäus saying: “He has remarkable technical ability, he’s ice-cold in front of goal and he really throws himself into challenges. The most impressive thing is that he’s performing in every game.”

With Tottenham looking bereft of ideas going forward against Bournemouth, failing to create a big chance throughout the match, it makes perfect sense to bring in a new forward on deadline day, and Kolo-Muani could be ideal.

Taskin Ahmed grabs 7 for 19 for Durbar Rajshahi, a new BPL record

He became only the third bowler in men’s T20 cricket to take seven in an innings

Mohammad Isam02-Jan-2025Taskin Ahmed became only the third bowler in history to take a seven-wicket haul in men’s T20s, claiming 7 for 19 in Durbar Rajshahi’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match against Dhaka Capitals. It is also the best bowling figures in the BPL’s history, beating Mohammad Amir’s 6 for 17 for Khulna Tigers in 2020.Taskin continues to be consistent in all formats after he finished 2024 with 63 international wickets at 19.23, Bangladesh’s biggest haul in the year.He emulated Colin Ackermann, who was the first bowler to take seven wickets in a T20 – in a Vitality Blast game in 2019 – and Malaysia’s Syazrul Idrus, who took seven for Malaysia against China in 2023.After Dhaka decided to bat at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Taskin removed both openers Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan in his first two overs. He bowled a ripper to Litton, who fended the short ball towards first slip, before Tanzid was caught behind chasing a wide one.

“You need luck to get five. I am really happy [to take seven]. It’s a big deal for me. I am from Bangladesh so I will remember holding this BPL record.”Taskin Ahmed

Dhaka recovered in the middle overs before Taskin returned with the wicket of Shahadat Hossain in the 17th over. Beaten by a slower ball, Shahadat holed out to Ryan Burl who took a sharp catch at long-on. Taskin had Chaturanga de Silva later in the same over, before a triple-wicket final over. Alauddin Babu was the first to go in the 20th, skying one to mid-off, before Taskin yorked Mukidul Islam. He missed out on the hat-trick but got Shubham Ranjane next ball to finish with 4-0-19-7.The glut of wickets in the last four overs slowed Dhaka down significantly, leaving Rajshahi with a moderate 175 to chase. They reached the target in the 19th over, with seven wickets in hand.Taskin said it was a proud moment for him, becoming the bowler with the best figures in the BPL. “I have always thought about taking a lot of wickets. If you don’t visualise it, you can’t make it happen. Obviously you need luck to take wickets. I am happy that I could execute my plans… It is a great feeling that I could deliver whenever my captain brought me into the attack.””It is always special to take a five-wicket haul in every format,” he added. “I have taken three or four wickets plenty of times. You need luck to get five. I am really happy. It’s a big deal for me. I am from Bangladesh so I will remember holding this BPL record.”Taskin said that he was happy with the type of pitches on offer at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, with the surfaces mostly sporting. “I think there is little margin for error. We can’t get away with any lose deliveries. Pitches are great for batters, who face a bit of challenge only against the new ball. I think such pitches will help us in the Champions Trophy [in February] where we will play on mostly good batting tracks in Pakistan and UAE.”

Their next Wood: Nottingham Forest now in the race to sign “ridiculous” CF

Nottingham Forest’s success story last season in the Premier League was heavily dependent on the goalscoring heroics of Chris Wood.

The Tricky Trees will be competing in the Europa League thanks to their lethal New Zealander, who would finish the campaign with a blistering 20 league strikes next to his name as Nuno Espirito Santo’s men soared to seventh position.

It will be up to Wood to keep up these explosive levels heading into next campaign, with some help potentially coming his way in the centre-forward department if Forest can strike up a deal for this lethal striker to join.

Forest in race to sign goalscoring veteran

Away from adding in more strikers, the experienced 33-year-old will, for sure, be joined by an exciting new winger supplying him with chances in the form of Dan Ndoye.

It has now been confirmed that Ndoye will don Forest red ahead of the 24/25 season, having finally agreed a deal to move from Bologna to the City Ground for a bumper £35m.

He could soon be followed through the door by another statement addition in the form of Chelsea outcast Christopher Nkunku, alongside another deal potentially getting off the ground for this goalscoring veteran to join Nuno’s expanding ranks.

A move for Mehdi Taremi does appear to have more legs at this point than the Frenchman boldly switching Stamford Bridge for the Midlands, with a report by the Tasnim News Agency stating that the Iranian marksman is tempted by the prospect of a Premier League move, away from current employers Inter Milan.

Inter are also noted as being keen to offload the 33-year-old, amid interest growing in his services from Fulham, Leeds United, and West Ham United, on top of Forest throwing their hat into the ring.

Forest will hope they can strike gold with another seasoned striker joining the ranks, with Taremi possessing the same goalscoring prowess that Wood has showcased at the City Ground all across his nomadic career to date.

Why Taremi can become Forest's next Wood

On the books of Porto, before embarking on a big move to Italy, Taremi had managed to reach the same heroic status that Wood has now achieved at the City Ground.

In total, the seasoned 33-year-old would fire home a prolific 91 strikes for his Portuguese employers from 182 outings, with his overall career tally standing at a devastating 202 goals from 445 clashes subsequently.

He hasn’t had it all his own way, however, with his current spell in Serie A only seeing him score a meagre three times from 43 clashes. Yet, he will back himself to bounce back and get back to his best if Forest comes calling, with Wood also displaying that same level of resilience across his lengthy playing days to date.

Indeed, the towering 6-foot-3 striker has experienced plenty of ups and downs himself when lining up for a mammoth 15 different teams, with an equally barren spell coming his way at Newcastle United, just before the Tricky Trees became his next home.

Only five goals would be handed to him from 39 appearances on Tyneside, yet Forest’s gamble in acquiring Wood has more than paid off, with their “outstanding” striker – which he was labelled by Match of the Day 2 pundit Stephen Warnock – now 36 strikes down and counting for Nuno’s high-flyers.

With Taremi coming in at the same age as Wood, alongside also boasting a similarly lofty 6-foot-2 frame, this might well go down as another shrewd catch if a move accelerates into motion, with the in-demand Iranian also receiving glowing praise for being “ridiculous” in front of goal by Rio Ferdinand.

Porto's Mehdi Taremi

With Igor Jesus also in through the door this summer, Nuno’s centre-forward options could soon be brimming with even more quality if the Inter number 99 makes his Premier League dreams a reality.

Kane Williamson coy on T20I future after New Zealand's World Cup exit

New Zealand captain could have other priorities at end of career, says Fleming

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Jun-20241:17

Fleming: Williamson has to decide on what his future holds after disappointing T20 World Cup

Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s captain, said his team would need time to regroup after the disappointment of their group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup, but could not confirm whether he’d be back for another tilt at the title when the tournament returns in India and Sri Lanka in 2026.Williamson, who turns 34 in August, has been a mainstay of New Zealand’s greatest white-ball team for more than a decade, having helped his side reach at least the semi-finals in seven of the ten consecutive World Cups that he has played in, across 20- and 50-over formats, since 2011.In that time, New Zealand have played in three finals – with Williamson’s personal contributions including a Player-of-the-Tournament display in England in 2019 and an innings of 85 from 48 balls in defeat to Australia in Dubai in 2021. But, with his long-time team-mate Trent Boult having already confirmed this current tournament was his last T20 World Cup, Williamson recognises that a changing of the guard could be on the cards.”Oh, I don’t know,” he said, when asked if he’d still be involved in New Zealand’s T20I set-up in 2026. “There’s a bit of time between now and then, so it’s about regrouping as a side. We’ve got red-ball cricket over the next year basically, so it’s back into some other international formats, and we’ll see where things land.”New Zealand’s most notable victory of recent years came in the Test format in 2021, when Williamson captained the team to victory over India in the World Test Championship final in Southampton. The two teams are set for a Test rematch in India’s own conditions later this year, with New Zealand also slated for a three-match home series against England in December, and a four-match tour of Australia in 2026-27.Kane Williamson guided New Zealand over the line against Papua New Guinea•Getty ImagesAll of which could take precedence for Williamson, who played his 100th Test earlier this year alongside another of his long-standing team-mates Tim Southee, and who could yet become the first New Zealand batter to reach 10,000 Test runs (he currently has 8743).Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show, Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, said that Williamson would be afforded the time he needs and deserves to figure out his next move, but that his priorities were bound to have altered as he enters the final years of his illustrious career.”It hasn’t really been questioned over here, due to his genius with the bat, but he has to make a decision now after a disappointing World Cup,” Fleming said. “What does his future hold? Is it all three formats, is it franchise cricket, is it family time? He will be getting to that point where he starts making decisions that have other influences, whereas before it was cricket and cricket only.”He will be afforded the luxury of time, because he’s a generational player and he’ll be hurting a lot. The older New Zealand players would have looked at this as maybe their last good opportunity, so it might be that it’s time to move on, or he’ll steel himself to right the wrongs for the next one. But he’s not a guy that gives away a lot, so it’d be interesting to see what he does.”On the specifics of this latest campaign, Williamson admitted that New Zealand had been too slow to adjust to the challenge that they faced in the Caribbean, where a strong Afghanistan and the hosts West Indies proved too powerful in a tough Group C.”It took a long time to start and then, in a matter of days, we were not in contention, which was frustrating,” Williamson said. “We played against a couple of very strong sides who are very well equipped in these conditions and unfortunately that was the difference in our first two games.”All in all it’s frustrating, but there’ll be learnings for the players that come back to this part of the world. These conditions have been somewhat challenging, so they are some good experiences to have going forward.”
