Liverpool have a bigger talent than Clark & he wasn’t in the FA Cup squad

Supporters would be forgiven for having resigned themselves to the expectation that Liverpool's exciting season under Jurgen Klopp's tutelage – the esteemed German's last on Merseyside – would have been derailed over recent weeks following a spate of alarming injuries.

Against Southampton in the FA Cup on Wednesday night, the Anfield side was indeed nursing 14 absences to first-team members due to injury and illness, but Liverpool's able academy players sparkled once again, teenage forwards Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns both netting to sink Russell Martin's wasteful side.

Lewis Koumas scores for Liverpool.

The latter's emphatic brace off the bench spoke of a prolific career yet to come while the deflection off professional debutant Koumas' opening goal must not detract from the slickness and spirit of the 18-year-old.

The ashes of a remarkable Carabao Cup final over Chelsea last weekend were still smouldering, a joyous contest that saw midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo fall as a by-product.

Neither are expected to spend extensive time in the medical room but the sheer gravity of Liverpool's injury crisis is belied by the unrelenting progress on the pitch, with James McConnell and Bobby Clark starting in midfield – anchored by the out-of-place Joe Gomez – and performing admirably.

Clark, aged 19, was particularly impressive once again, with his recent efforts proving that he is undoubtedly one of Liverpool's finest teenage talents, if not the Premier League's.

Klopp’s youngsters prevailed in tough circumstances once again to advance to the quarter-finals.

Arriving from Newcastle United when he was 16 years old, Clark has grown into his skin considerably over the past few months, having supplied Koumas with the assist for Liverpool's first-half strike against Southampton.

A nice way to crown a noteworthy display, but certainly not the highlight of his performance, which saw the dynamic midfielder showcase his ball-playing aptitude, creativity and work rate in recycling possession and protecting his backline.

As the table above portrays, Clark completed a display of many facets, taking control in the absence of his senior peers and proving that he is deserving of a lasting role in Liverpool's system.

In total, the 5 foot 10 talent has made eight appearances for Klopp's team this term, featuring across four of Liverpool's past six Premier League matches and being hailed by The Athletic's James Pearce for his "impressive development."

A versatile player, conditioned into a central role after thriving as a free-scoring winger in his earlier days, Clark offers danger through his penetrative runs and energy that melds with a range of passing to open up; passages for his teammate – something that Koumas was the grateful recipient of last time out.

Liverpool's Bobby Clark.

While Dominik Szoboszlai's return from injury is imminent, Endo's knock could see him return on Saturday to face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground and fears that Gravenberch had suffered long-term damage have been eased – Klopp said before the Southampton match, "it could have been worse, but it is bad enough to rule him out of this game and the next game" – Clark has demonstrated that he offers an ability that can be used and benefitted from over the coming weeks.

Another long-time absentee might find themself close to a comeback in Stefan Bajcetic, whose performances of great precocity last season have been stifled this year due to an abductor problem and growing pains that have consigned him to off-pitch development.

The Spaniard has only featured twice during the 2023/24 campaign, both showings coming in February, and while Klopp remarked that he is "pain-free", the 19-year-old has not returned to training and is unlikely to get the green light over the coming weeks.

Nonetheless, he's an immense talent and his return will be a huge lift, his quality perhaps even eclipsing that of Clark, and indeed the rest of Liverpool's talented Kirkby crop.

Liverpool have a bigger talent than Clark

This time last year, Bajcetic was the name on everyone's lips, with the all-action midfielder standing tall as Liverpool's shining light in a period of great trouble, Klopp's side slumping into mediocrity after many years of unrelenting output.

Described by Liverpool follower Zubin Daver as a "special" prospect, Bajcetic brought energy and skill and art to Liverpool's engine room and completed 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring off the bench to clinch an important Premier League victory in December 2022 on only his second appearance, gliding into the box and firing true against Aston Villa.

Across his 11 appearances in the Premier League last season, the Pontevedra prodigy completed 79% of his passes and succeeded with 64% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore, with much fanfare rising through the mists of Liverpool's demise: a future phenomenon had been born.

Despite being shackled to the sidelines this season, Bajcetic has completed more than double the senior appearances of any of his teenage teammates on Merseyside, speaking volumes for the sheer impression and trust that was placed in his skill as Liverpool fought to salvage something from their season.

Indeed, the 6 foot 1 star, nimble yet deceptively strong in his frame, would surely have been the first name on the teamsheet in midfield last night, had he been fit.

What happened to the Liverpool starlet who was a bigger talent than Bradley

Liverpool once had a talent who was a bigger talent than Conor Bradley, however, he now plays in the Championship.

ByZak Anderton Feb 27, 2024

His polished passing range and prodigious energy are exactly what is needed within a Klopp system, pumping life and mettle into the high-octane system, and while the iconic leader is draping the curtain on his tenure after the close of the campaign, Bajcetic has the attributes to succeed for many years.

An illustrious era might be drawing to a close but Klopp's legacy will endure for many years, with talented players such as Bajcetic and Clark having the makings of first-team regulars at Liverpool to contribute toward the success of the next chapter, whatever that might be.

England, Australia brace for pitch battle as Women's Ashes reach point of no return

England captain Heather Knight hopes spinning wicket will bring her side back into contest after ODI defeats

Melinda Farrell in Taunton17-Jul-2019England’s hopes of keeping the Women’s Ashes alive may rest on a turning pitch at Taunton and the two youngest members of their squad. Australia lead the multi-format series 6-0 after winning all three ODIs convincingly and will retain the Ashes if England fail to win the four-day contest, worth four points.England have drafted left-arm spinner Kirstie Gordon into the squad after her impressive performance for England Academy in the three-day warm up match against Australia. Gordon took a total of eight wickets in the match and may join England’s other left-arm 20-year-old spinner, Sophie Ecclestone, in the XI.A turning pitch – a regular feature at a ground often referred to as “Ciderabad” on the county circuit – could help England negate Australia’s pace attack, which is likely to include Tayla Vlaeminck, the 20-year-old right-armer, who is widely considered to be the quickest bowler in the Australian squad. After both captains had viewed the pitch, Meg Lanning described it as “used” and, while this is technically the case, the last time it was played on was the Men’s World Cup match between Afghanistan and New Zealand on June 8. But there were still visible marks on what appeared to be a dry surface and Lanning and her England counterpart, Heather Knight, both expected spin to play a significant role.”It looks a little bit dry, I think it will generally play okay to start with but obviously we’ll have to see how it adapts as the game goes on,” said Knight.”There’s the potential it could turn later in the Test which is pretty exciting with both sides going out there to win,” said Lanning. “I think it will be a great contest.””We’re happy playing whatever comes our way, I think it will be a really good contest and it will play reasonably well early on, it’s just towards the back end we’ll just have to see how it goes.”ALSO READ: Perth glories inspire Kate Cross to hit her markBoth sides are keen for a result, and with rain forecast that may be a challenge, but it is difficult to over-emphasise the importance of a decent pitch in a women’s Test. The last time a Women’s Ashes Test was played on a surface conducive to attacking cricket was in January 2014 at the WACA. The previous fixture, at Wormsley in 2013, and subsequent matches, at Canterbury and North Sydney Oval were played on slow surfaces that all too often led to dull cricket.”We obviously need a result so we want a pitch that will be conducive to that,” said Knight. “But I think the last few pitches we’ve played on have been very flat and slow which haven’t been great for the spectacle and haven’t been great in terms of creating exciting cricket to watch and creating results.”I think it will be slightly different to that. We’ll obviously have to see how it plays and as a team we’ll have to adapt in terms of how we play our cricket. If you ask me at the end of the four days we’ll see and we’ll have a better reflection on whether it’s a good pitch for four-day cricket or not.”The last few Test matches haven’t been good as a contest, but I’ve no doubt this match will be different to that,” agreed Lanning.”We’re ready to play on anything, we feel we’ve got a good attack with the ball, both spin and pace and the batting line-up is really strong as well.”

Late transfer at Derby County would be damaging for John-Jules

Derby County will want to comfortably stroll to a win on Saturday after two games without a victory in a row, drawing blanks on the road to both Lincoln City and Reading with just one point picked up.

Cheltenham Town won't be complete pushovers travelling to Pride Park this weekend however, Darrell Clarke's Robins still battling away at the opposite end of League One to the Rams in a relegation battle.

To add some needed firepower into the ranks, Paul Warne could well be tempted to swoop in for this attacker this January with the likes of young Arsenal loanee Tyreece John-Jules falling down the Rams pecking order further subsequently.

Derby swooping for League One star

Derby had been cited as an interested party looking at Wigan Athletic star Callum Lang previously this transfer window, Football Insider even reporting that Warne's side had placed a bid for the Latics man earlier this month.

Their pursuit of the Wigan number 19 could be boosted by recent developments that Lang has now handed in a transfer request, as first reported by Wigan Today earlier this week.

Derby aren't alone in going after the versatile forward this transfer window though, with fellow promotion rivals Portsmouth also interested in landing the 25-year-old forward to boost their own hopes of going up to the Championship.

A loyal servant to the Latics – sticking it out at the DW Stadium even during precarious off-the-field turbulence – Lang could well sense that the time is right for pastures new finally.

The Rams will just hope Lang fancies a move to Derbyshire over relocating to Fratton Park, with Lang a useful asset that could help Warne out in a number of ways.

If utilised as a second striker at Pride Park, the end could be well on the horizon for John-Jules who hasn't really set the world alight since joining on loan in the summer from the Emirates.

January transfer window: All the deadline day deals from England and Scotland

Stay on top of all the latest transfer deals across the Premier League, EFL and SPFL as the January window closes.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 1, 2024 How Lang would fit into the Derby team

Lang has played across every position in the Latics front line pretty much during his time in Lancashire, slotting into the side primarily at centre-forward, left winger, right winger and even as a second striker option.

Playing in that second striker role would see him come into Warne's first team, displacing the likes of John-Jules and Louis Thompson instantly.

Notching up ten goal contributions from that spot whilst with Wigan over 34 appearances to date – compared to John-Jules' lacklustre solitary goal in League One action this campaign – Lang also further excels deployed down the right-hand side.

As is seen in the table above, Lang is a flexible and adaptable presence and could come into the team even when Nathaniel Mendez-Lang is in need of a breather or James Collins is having a torrid time of it in front of goal away from just being a direct John-Jules upgrade.

With Derby falling short too often recently – with costly results potentially harming their push for automatic promotion as a result – Warne will need to add in players who can improve his faltering team this January and the 5 foot 11 Wigan forward could well fit that bill.

Clement could land a Jack upgrade in Rangers move for £5m dynamo

Glasgow Rangers still have a week before they return to domestic action on 20 January and this will give Philippe Clement some extra time to work with his squad.

The winter break has given the Belgian manager an ideal chance to spend an extended period of time on the training ground with the first team squad, which has culminated in a trip to La Manga.

Hopefully, the chance to regroup and refocus will lead to long-term gains and give the Gers the opportunity to add another couple of trophies during the second half of the season.

So far, striker Fabio Silva has been the only addition to the squad and if Clement is serious about winning the Premiership, another couple of new arrivals will need to be brought in this month.

Naturally, a few names have already been linked with a move to Ibrox this month, yet the latest player to be mentioned could be one of the most exciting yet…

Rangers' search for a new midfielder

It remains no secret that the 49-year-old coach wishes to bring in another midfielder this month, particularly with Ryan Jack and John Lundstram out of contract at the end of the season.

Their future remains unclear at this current moment in time and the onus will be on Clement to bring in another midfielder that could be a long-term solution in the engine room.

Marko Bulat

According to Football Scotland, the Light Blues have ‘checked on the conditions’ of Marko Bulat, who is currently playing for Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb.

The report states that the 22-year-old is potentially interested in a January move away from his homeland, yet the club could face one major stumbling block.

Dinamo value the midfielder at around £5m and this fee may just price the Gers out this month unless they manage to offload a few bodies.

Latest Rangers transfer news: Gers want PL teen; Saudi link to midfield ace

Who is Philippe Clement eyeing up in the transfer window ahead of his first full season at Ibrox?

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 9, 2024

Judging by his age and his potential to develop into a top-class player, making a move for the youngster could be a wise investment by the club.

Not only that, but he could become a major upgrade on Jack, who has missed several games this season due to injury and is becoming increasingly unreliable.

Marko Bulat could be an upgrade to Ryan Jack

Jack is currently into his seventh season at the Ibrox side, having joined from Aberdeen in 2017, and he has made over 200 appearances during that time.

On the other hand, prior to the 2023/24 campaign, Jack had missed a staggering 118 matches for the club due to several different injury issues and this is a big worry, especially as he will turn 32 next month.

Can Clement afford to give him an extended contract when he doesn’t know exactly how many times he will be able to feature?

This season, the Scot currently ranks 13th among the squad for goals and assists in the top flight (one), along with ranking 11th for accurate passes per game (27.4), 16th for key passes per game (0.5) and 22nd for tackles per game (0.1) and these statistics clearly indicate that even when he does get a chance in the side, Jack fails to show much influence.

Bulat, however, has been solid for his club this season so far as he currently ranks fourth for goals and assists (five) in the Croatian top flight, while also ranking 15th for accurate passes per game (22.2), sixth for key passes per game (1.3) and ninth for tackles per game (one) and aside from making fewer accurate passes per game than Jack, the Croatian gem has outperformed him in every other metric.

The key thing is, Bulat will only continue to improve, especially playing regularly in European competition, whereas Jack is approaching the end of his career and his stats will only continue to decline.

According to Kai Watson, founder of the Rangers Journal, Clement could also be signing a young Ivan Rakitic should he lure Bulat to Glasgow in the next few weeks.

How Marko Bulat compares to Ivan Rakitic

The former Barcelona midfielder was one of the most underrated players of his generation who was simultaneously able to provide a goal-scoring threat along with possessing a wonderful defensive ability.

Indeed, the 35-year-old has played 815 matches throughout his glittering career, scoring 113 goals and registering 135 assists in the process.

These are excellent figures for a player who operated predominantly as a central midfielder during his club career and if the Gers manage to sign Bulat, they could have a player able to provide a goal threat from the engine room.

Watson goes on to praise Bulat when analysing him for the Rangers Journal, saying: “From watching Bulat and looking at the numbers, he reminds me of a young Ivan Rakitić.

“He’s a box-to-box midfielder who is a very capable defender and a goal scoring threat. Technically gifted and intelligent in and out of possession, hence the Rakitić comparison.”

Bulat has already played 171 matches in his club career so far, along with netting 15 goals and grabbing 13 assists, and while it is perhaps too early to suggest he is the next big thing in Croatian football, he is certainly on track to replicate Rakitic.

This season, only three goals have come from Clement’s central midfield options and this is something which needs to improve heading into the second half of the campaign.

Relying on certain players to score is a recipe for disaster and this could heighten the need to add a goalscoring midfielder to the squad.

£5m is a big sum of money on the surface, yet the Light Blues need to properly establish a player trading model which could allow the club to secure major profits on players they sign and develop.

Bulat has a wonderfully high ceiling and constant exposure in European competition will only see him improve and this can work wonders for the Ibrox side in the future.

Their initial £5m could potentially turn into a profit of £15m-£20m and these are the sort of gambles that the manager should be taking to reassert their dominance of Scottish football.

Nunez benched in 4 changes for predicted Liverpool lineup vs Arsenal

Liverpool are currently competing for silverware across all four fronts but face a daunting obstacle in the first step of their FA Cup campaign, travelling to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal.

Having won their Europa League group and advanced to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup – where Fulham await for a double-legged tie – Liverpool are flying and top the Premier League table after 20 matches to boot.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo are both unavailable after heading off to the African Cup of Nations and Asia Cup respectively, while Dominik Szoboszlai is to miss a few weeks with a hamstring strain.

Liverpool will take a winter break next week and thus could field a strong line-up in London tomorrow, with Klopp making four changes from the team that defeated Newcastle United on New Year's Day.

1 GK – Alisson

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Klopp admitted that the trip to Arsenal is perhaps not the best game in the calender to rotate, and while Caoimhin Kelleher has been a decent backup, Alisson should start between the sticks, with his expertise needed against Bukayo Saka and co.

2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Long has Trent Alexander-Arnold been regarded as one of Europe's most creative and influential footballers, but this season, the 25-year-old is starting to demonstrate his worth as one of the game's very best.

With two goals and eight assists to his name, the Reds vice-captain will be confident of a standout performance, making amends for that miss.

3 CB – Ibrahima Konate

Liverpool ace Ibrahima Konate.

With Joel Matip out for the campaign after rupturing his ACL in December, it was crucial that Ibrahima Konate stepped up, and boy has he succeeded.

The 6 foot 4 Frenchman is a monstrous presence in the rearguard and works so well alongside his captain.

4 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Virgil van Dijk will start against Arsenal, with the imperious Dutchman utterly magnificent this season as he puts last year's malaise behind him.

In the Premier League, as per Sofascore, the 32-year-old has completed 91% of his passes, averaged 5.0 ball recoveries and 4.5 clearances per game and won a whopping 78% of his duels.

5 LB – Joe Gomez

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Owen Beck was recalled from his loan with Dundee but will not be eligible to play in London due to a suspension, so the versatile Joe Gomez will receive the nod and look to continue his impressive season at left-back.

The 26-year-old had been in dismal form for large portions of last season but deserves so much credit for weathering the storm and returning to play a key part in a year that tantalises silver-laden success.

6 DM – Alexis Mac Allister

Alexis Mac Allister.

Alexis Mac Allister missed the last four matches of December with a knee injury but made a cameo as Liverpool beat Newcastle, earning applause for his delightful threaded pass to set up Liverpool's late penalty.

With Endo absent, the Argentinian orchestrator will return to the starting line-up and will be expected to use his technical prowess to assert control in the midfield battle.

7 CM – Curtis Jones

Curtis Jones.

Curtis Jones was a key component in Liverpool's late-season purple patch before the summer, salvaging Europa League football and proving his worth as a multi-functional star in his Merseyside outfit.

Having scored three goals across the past few weeks, the multi-functional star has been so important in the centre of the park and is increasingly confident in his recycling of possession and metronomic swagger, with analyst Raj Chohan lauding his "phenomenal" ball retention skills.

8 CM – Ryan Gravenberch

wataru-endo-ryan-gravenberch-liverpool-opinion

Signing from Bayern Munich for £34m on transfer deadline day, Ryan Gravenberch put a tough spell of his career behind him and looked ahead to life on English soil with optimism, and while he made a fast start with Liverpool, he has regressed somewhat of late.

The 21-year-old has scored two goals and supplied two assists but has only started seven times in the league; that said, his latent quality is clear to see.

As per FBref, the £150k-per-week midfielder ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 10% for progressive passes and successful take-ons, the top 13% for progressive carries and the top 11% for blocks per 90.

9 RW – Harvey Elliott

Liverpool player Harvey Elliott.

With Salah now out of club action for around a month, give or take, Harvey Elliott, aged 20, might find a starting berth provided on the right wing, with the "special" talent, as he has been called by pundit Jamie Carragher, no doubt deserving of a more prominent role.

10 LW – Luis Diaz

Luis Diaz.

Luis Diaz has been under fire recently, having only scored three goals from 19 appearances in the Premier League, struggling to implement his electric game as he might desire.

Nonetheless, he is a fine player and showed some notable improvements in a talismanic first-half display against the Magpies, with The Athletic's James Pearce noting the "influential" effort.

Diogo Jota is fit and firing after injury but might be best utilised from the bench, where he can be ever so deadly.

Glasgow Rangers stumbled for the first time in the Premiership under Philippe Clement over the weekend.

Only a last-minute penalty saved their blushes against an Aberdeen side who had lost 6-0 to Celtic just a couple of weeks prior as they upped their performance levels against the Light Blues.

Nevertheless, the 1-1 draw against the Dons meant the Gers didn’t lose any ground on their Old Firm rivals, yet a win could have seen them claw back some of the deficit which has been allowed to build up since the start of the season.

Since the start of the 2018/19 season, the Gers have won just four times in the north-east, with the first of those matches also ending in a 1-1 draw in what was Steven Gerrard’s top-flight debut for the club.

As bad as things have been for the Glasgow side recently, going back five years, the club were in an even worse state and had finished third in the league during the previous two seasons.

The former Liverpool captain didn’t exactly enjoy the best of starts domestically, while his transfer record was hit-and-miss.

There was one player who joined the Gers in the summer of 2018 who proved to be an utterly dismal signing, yet since departing, has turned into a goal-hungry machine – Umar Sadiq.

Umar Sadiq’s statistics at Rangers

With a daunting task ahead, Gerrard sought to improve a squad which had failed to challenge Celtic during their first two seasons back in the top flight by making 14 new signings.

This was a mixture of permanent and loan moves and the young Nigerian striker joined from AS Roma on a temporary basis having scored five Eredivisie goals for NAC Breda during the second half of the season before.

The Gers needed someone to supplement the goals Alfredo Morelos was contributing and Sadiq looked like a safe option, especially without having to shell out a transfer fee.

His stint turned out to be a nightmare, however, as the youngster managed only 116 minutes of senior action for the club in four appearances, failing to find the back of the net in the process.

His last appearance was the worst of the lot. With Morelos suspended and Kyle Lafferty injured ahead of the League Cup semifinal clash against Aberdeen, Sadiq was Gerrard’s only hope.

He headed over in the sixth minute before straying offside on a few occasions as he simply couldn’t time his runs well.

His lack of attacking input severely restricted Rangers, and they ended up conceding a goal with just over ten minutes remaining as Lewis Ferguson headed in from a corner.

Sadiq was booked for diving near the end of the match, and it summarised his performance up to a tee, while Sky Sports gave him a rating of just 4/10, which was the worst out of any player in the starting XI.

He was sent packing in December, not even halfway through his loan agreement and not many of the Ibrox faithful would have believed how impressive he has turned out since leaving.

What Umar Sadiq did after leaving Rangers

The 6 foot 2 striker finally left Roma to join Partizan Belgrade in January 2020 following a solid six-month loan spell at the club and during his spell in Serbia, he scored 23 goals and grabbed 19 assists across just 52 matches and this attracted interest from afar.

It wasn’t long before he was on the move again, joining Spanish side Almeria, and that is where his career really began to take off.

During his time in Spain, Sadiq not only helped the club secure promotion to La Liga, but he plundered 43 goals in 84 appearances along the way, a stunning total and a far cry from diving against Aberdeen to try and win a penalty just a few years before.

He was dubbed as a “first-rate” striker by Mirandes manager Joseba Etxeberria during his spell in the second tier, and it showcased how far he had come in just a short space of time.

Following two goals in his first three matches in the top flight, Sadiq was signed by Real Sociedad for a fee in the region of €25m (£21.6m) during the final days of the summer transfer window in 2022.

He was looked upon as a replacement for the recently departed Alexander Isak, who moved to Newcastle United and it completed a stunning journey from goalless in Scotland to playing in one of the biggest leagues in the world.

He managed only one goal before suffering a season-ending injury after just a few matches for Sociedad, yet he has returned to the senior squad this term and has one goal in 13 La Liga matches.

Hopefully, he can regain the form which sealed a big-money move to the club in the first place as he looks to improve his goal record.

During his loan spell at the Light Blues, the 26-year-old was only valued at around €0.5m (£0.4m) and if he had impressed during his time in Scotland, Gerrard may well have tried to strike a deal with Roma with regard to a potential permanent move.

While clearly not fit for purpose in the Premiership, Sadiq has improved vastly since 2018 and his move to Sociedad justifies this.

Rangers face a crucial tie against Aris Limassol on Thursday evening

Judging by his scoring rate since 2020, the Gers may rue his hasty exit, and he was even linked with a big-money move to Bayern Munich. It has been a stunning turnaround for a player who failed to find the back of the against the might of Aberdeen, St Mirren or Hibernian during his stint in Scotland.

No one at that time felt he could reach such heights, of course, and it is a testament to his character that he rebounded from such a poor spell abroad to forge the career that he has at this current moment in time.

Since leaving Rangers in 2018, Sadiq has notched a total of 71 career goals, not a bad return at all.

He wasn’t the first player to struggle at Ibrox before shining elsewhere and nor will he be the last, that’s for sure.

United scraped into the FA Cup final on penalties despite spurning a three-goal lead against the Championship side on Sunday. With the game at 3-3 after extra-time, the Red Devils won the shootout 4-2 as Rasmus Hojlund netted the decisive effort. At the full-time whistle, substitute Antony was seen cupping his ears to the opposition in an act that has been widely condemned by pundits and fans.

Former Northern Irish international Conor McLaughlin tweeted: "Antony cupping his ears to the Coventry players. Embarrassing."

Ex-Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "He [Antony] needs to concentrate on himself because he could be playing in the Championship next season."

Abdulmalik posted: "This should be Antony's final season as a United player," and Brad Cox added: "Antony cupping his ears to Coventry players sums the mentality of this group up. Embarrassing behaviour."

Finally, Gary Hunt put: "Some of those players have absolutely no class mate. [Bruno] Fernandes having words with the keeper after beating him with a penalty. I can’t imagine it was words of commiseration."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United set up a second-straight FA Cup final with Manchester City but did so in very unconvincing fashion. This result will do nothing to ease the pressure on under-fire manager Erik ten Hag and for Antony, an £86 million ($109m) signing with two goals and two assists this season, his stock is not exactly going up.
