Yorkshire's Test status restored pending resolution of internal issues

Headingley permitted to host New Zealand Test and South Africa ODI after suspension lifted

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Feb-2022Yorkshire’s right to host international fixtures has been reinstated by the ECB, on the proviso that the club’s members desist from blocking reforms introduced in the wake of the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal, and that the influence of the family trust run by the former chairman, Colin Graves, is removed.Assuming these requirements can be met by March 31, Headingley will be able to resume preparations for hosting this summer’s third Test against New Zealand in June, and an ODI against South Africa in July – lucrative contests that Lord Kamlesh Patel, the chairman, had warned were fundamental to the club’s financial viability.”I welcome this decision and thank the Board of the ECB for supporting the return of international matches at Headingley once again,” Lord Patel said in a statement. “We have worked night and day to bring about tangible change at Yorkshire, and the removal of the sanctions has validated and reignited our drive for positive progress.”Rafiq said that he supported the ECB’s decision, saying that under Lord Patel, Yorkshire have “shown a real willingness to change and have already come a long way”.”This is the correct decision by the ECB,” he twetted. “His [Lord Patel’s] leadership has earned the club another chance but the reforms must continue and we must see real change.”Yorkshire was stripped of its major-match-hosting status in November, following a wave of revelations about the club’s long-suppressed investigation into allegations of institutional racism – including the suggestion, reported by ESPNcricinfo, that the racial slur “P**i” had been considered to be “banter” within the team dressing-room.At the height of the crisis, the club was also hit by a mass exodus of club sponsors – including Emerald Publishing, Headingley’s title sponsor, and Nike, the team’s kit suppliers – and the reinstatement of their major-match status will also enable them to rebuild that portfolio, particularly in the lead-up to the 2023 season, when the club is due to host a lucrative Ashes Test.In a statement, the ECB acknowledged “the hard work and good progress made by the club”, after reviewing a written submission from Yorkshire officials at a formal meeting last week, and an independent assessment from the Good Governance Institute & Howard Kennedy LLP.Overall, the ECB assessed that Yorkshire was able to “show a demonstrable commitment to building a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion”; provide “evidence that it is adopting a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination”; “commit to identifying and tackling historic cases of discrimination”; and “ensure that Yorkshire County Cricket Club is a welcoming environment for everyone”.However, clear issues still remain at the club, not least those pertaining to Lord Patel’s appointment as chairman in November – an issue that was deemed by a section of club members, led by Patel’s predecessor Robin Smith, to have been unconstitutional. In response, Patel claimed last week that the group was actively seeking to “delay and derail” Headingley’s international reinstatement, because they believe the club is being “sacrificed on the altar of Black Lives Matter”.The matter was raised in the House of Commons earlier this week by Julian Knight MP, the chairman of the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee, which has been investigating the racism issue ever since Rafiq’s emotional testimony to the committee in November.Related

Lord Patel: Black Lives Matter opponents are behind Yorkshire reform delays

The ECB addressed these matters in their announcement, stating that the club would be required to resolve the issues that had been “subject to procedural flaws”, while also calling for “amendments to club rules relating to the appointment and operation of the Board”.These relate to the ongoing issue of the Graves Family Trust, which is owed approximately £15 million by Yorkshire following a bail-out in the early 2000s which saved the club from bankruptcy. According to Roger Hutton – the former chairman who resigned in the wake of Rafiq’s allegations – Graves’ continued role behind the scenes had been a significant “roadblock” in Yorkshire’s delayed response to the crisis.”The Board welcomed the hard work and actions taken by Yorkshire County Cricket Club towards putting the Club on a new path,” Barry O’Brien, the ECB’s interim chair, said. “Alongside the progress already made, we considered many factors in reaching our decision. Amongst them, the impact on fans who have bought tickets in good faith and the young people who will benefit from Yorkshire’s improved outreach and pathway provisions. Finally, the Board was mindful that the return of international cricket will support continued change and progress at the Club.”I very much hope that the traumatic events that have taken place at Yorkshire over the past several months and years will act as a catalyst for increasing the pace of change throughout the game.”Yorkshire’s progress, both in the lead-up to its March deadline and thereafter, will be monitored quarterly by the ECB, alongside the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).”There is no place for racism in sport or in any part of our society,” Marcial Boo, the EHRC chief executive, said. “In our meetings with Lord Patel at Yorkshire County Cricket Club, and with the England and Wales Cricket Board, we encouraged them to take bold steps in eradicating racism. We welcome today’s announcement as a clear sign that progress is being made.”We will now closely monitor progress against their action plan, which will involve us attending quarterly checkpoint meetings with the YCCC and ECB. If progress is not made quickly enough, we will consider further legal action.”We hope that other cricket clubs will take this opportunity to examine what they are doing to tackle discrimination and harassment, so that no one involved in cricket, whether as an amateur or a professional, suffers the racism that others sadly faced in the past.”

Emery pushing Aston Villa to sign £80k-p/w star who could replace Ramsey

Unai Emery is pushing Aston Villa to sign a “sensational” English midfielder in January, according to a recent report. The Villans were beaten by Liverpool on Saturday night, making it four defeats in a row in all competitions for the Midlands side and now three games without a win in the Premier League.

Aston Villa now have new injury concern to £150k-p/w star alongside Ramsey

Another blow for Unai Emery…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 10, 2024 Aston Villa injury news

The defeat at Anfield ended what has been a poor 10 days or so for Emery’s side, as they have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, lost their unbeaten start in the Champions League and lost ground in the Premier League. Not only did Villa suffer defeat, but they also suffered a few injury concerns that will have Emery sweating.

Midfielder Jacob Ramsey was forced off with a hamstring problem against Liverpool, but he was not the only player to suffer an injury problem, as fellow midfielder Boubacar Kamara was also forced off with a fresh concern. Emery was asked after the game about Ramsey and Kamara and their injuries, and he said: “Hamstring. He was feeling something.

“Kamara as well he felt something on a run back; he did. Of course, we are playing a lot of matches, but Ramsey didn’t play on Wednesday. But they [players] are always at risk of injuries. We have to accept it. They are injured now, Ramsey, hopefully not Kamara. They are coming back for the next match, hopefully Cash and Ross Barkley.”

Emery will hope to have the two players back as soon as possible, but the Spaniard already has his eye on a midfielder who could replace the more forward thinking Ramsey.

Emery pushing Aston Villa to sign £80k-p/w star from Chelsea

According to reports relayed by Caught Offside, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has emerged as a transfer target for Aston Villa ahead of the January transfer window. The 26-year-old currently plays for Chelsea and has done so since this summer, when he joined from Leicester City.

Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

Dewsbury-Hall, who earns a weekly wage of £80,000 per week at Stamford Bridge, has struggled for regular minutes at his new club, appearing just three times in the Premier League so far this season.

This report states that the midfielder’s future at Chelsea is already in doubt, and Emery is pushing Villa to make a move in January. Dewsbury-Hall, who was labelled “sensational” by Brendan Rodgers during his time with the Foxes, played under Enzo Maresca last season, scoring 12 goals and assisting 14 in 44 Championship games, as the Foxes won the title.

However, this season, Dewsbury-Hall, who is in the 97th percentile for assists per 90 by midfielders over the last 365 days (0.28 per 90), has struggled for game time under Maresca. With him failing to make Premier League matchday squads entirely, his future could already lie elsewhere, but his contract until 2029 means Chelsea do hold all the cards at the negotiating table.

£25m wasted: Arteta needs to sell 5/10 Arsenal dud after Bournemouth

Arsenal have risen through different levels under Mikel Arteta, and though there have been some ridiculous claims of the Spanish tactician harnessing the so-called dark arts in recent weeks, you can’t argue against the magical job that has been made over the past several years.

Arteta inherited a squad that was failing to inspire confidence, fill the Emirates Stadium, continue Arsene Wenger’s legacy in a positive and fitting fashion.

He’s pieced the London club back together, brick by brick, and though the Gunners have fallen short, so agonisingly short, in each of the past two Premier League title battles against Manchester City, it’s important to look back at where Arsenal have come from.

A range of distinctive improvements have converged to form a fearsome new whole, with the backline among the finest that European football has to offer at the moment.

Arsenal's defensive overload

Arteta and Arsenal’s sporting director Edu deserve all the plaudits for their success in trimming the fat at the Emirates over the past few years and signing players fit for purpose within an elite-level outfit.

This has been displayed through the loping strides taken at the rear, with William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes combining to stand as one of the meatiest and most formidable partnerships around.

Indeed, last season, Arsenal great Lauren even said: “There isn’t a better centre-back partnership than Gabriel and William Saliba in the Premier League, in my opinion.”

23-year-old Saliba’s red card against Bournemouth might muddy the present view, but then football fans are fickle, and one blot on the France star’s copybook does not negate the stunning work that he has plied in recent years, rivalling the likes of Virgil van Dijk as Europe’s prized centre-back.

Great teams carry more than just one or two high-class stars, and Arsenal have strengthened well over the past several windows, but there is now something of an overload of left-footed defenders.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has completed 70 appearances since joining from Pep Guardiola’s City in a £30m deal, but injuries and a loss of form have seen his playing time diminished, leading to more recent captures of Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori.

With youngsters such as Ayden Heaven pushing for a breakthrough, outcasts like Kieran Tierney will be looking for a way out, especially after interest was drummed up this summer.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

He’s not the only one. Though Jakub Kiwior has earned a bit of game time this season, he’s not inspiring confidence and may well be given the boot in 2025.

Jakub Kiwior's performance vs Bournemouth

Arsenal signed Kiwior from Italian club Spezia during the 2022/23 winter window, purchasing him for a £20m fee. There’s no question that the Poland international is a talented player, but he’s perhaps failed to quite bring it all together as Arteta would have hoped.

Saliba might have been dismissed against the Cherries but he’s been a pillar of rock-hard strength in recent years for the Gunners and was certainly not the only defender culpable for the team’s first defeat of the season.

Writing in his post-match player ratings, football.london’s Kaya Kaynak branded Kiwior with a 5/10 score, saying: ‘Had been doing OK defensively but his weak pass back to Raya for the penalty was really poor.’

Kiwior suffered the ignominy of being withdrawn at the 80-minute mark, having been introduced seven minutes before half-time, replacing Raheem Sterling after Saliba was dismissed for a last-man obstruction.

It wasn’t a dreadful performance from the 24-year-old, all things considered, but he displayed rustiness in possession and will be frustrated with his manager’s decision to hook him after being introduced past the hour mark.

The dynamic defender must not be judged on one performance alone, but nonetheless, for the good of his career, it’s perhaps high time for him to search for pastures new.

Why Arsenal should sell Jakub Kiwior

Kiwior has been praised in the past for his “extraordinary” qualities by his countryman Robert Lewandowski, who’s rather good in front of goal and thus knows a talented defender when he sees one.

But we need to be realistic, and with the Pole featuring 20 times at left-back last season, moved from his natural role in the centre due to the Gunners’ imperious and immovable (unless one gets sent off) partnership, it’s hard to see where he fits in, Arteta having spent around £42m on Euro 2024 star Calafiori.

As with the earlier-mentioned Tierney, Kiwior was the subject of transfer attention this summer, with Arteta seemingly considering his departure in August.

The £58k-per-week ace has room for growth and a slick passing game that makes a convincing comment on the strategy behind signing him, influencing Arsenal’s defensive structure, but his pitch time this season has been almost negligible, introduced against Bournemouth only because of dramatic circumstances.

He’s one of the lowest-paid first-teamers on the books but has still cost Arsenal around £5m in wages since being signed back in January 2023. Partner that up with the transfer fee, and he’s cost the club £25m without having properly established himself, even leading Arteta’s train of thought toward his exit only a matter of months ago.

Arteta has had no reservations about cutting players loose who are not going to enhance the project over the past several years, and he must do so again with Kiwior in 2025.

The 5 foot 11 star doesn’t look like he’s going to displace any of his highest-profile defensive teammates, but this simply bears testament to the job that Arteta has done. It would be best for his career path if he took the first steps of a new journey in 2025.

Fewer touches than Raya: Arsenal must axe 4/10 flop after Bournemouth

Biggest deal since Rice: Arsenal chasing move to sign their next Henry

Over the last couple of years, the Arsenal hierarchy have splashed the cash in the transfer market to hand boss Mikel Arteta the best chance of being a success in the Premier League.

This summer alone, the club forked out nearly £100m in new signings, with Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori joining from Real Sociedad and Bologna respectively, alongside David Raya after his loan move was made permanent.

However, the transfer business has appeared to pay off in the opening weeks of the new season, with the Gunners currently sat in third, level on points with Manchester City and just a point off leaders Liverpool.

Arteta’s side remain unbeaten in all competitions, drawing once and winning the other in their two Champions League meetings with Atalanta and PSG so far.

The supporters will be hoping that they can continue their excellent run after the ongoing international break, aiming to close the gap to top spot but also build on their impressive European start.

Injuries are yet to massively affect the side, but the Spaniard will be hoping that midfielder Martin Odegaard will be edging closer to a return to first-team action after missing each of the last seven games in all competitions after suffering an ankle issue on international duty.

However, one midfielder has been key for the Gunners this season, looking to be worth every penny of his big-money fee that the club forked out for his signature last summer.

Declan Rice’s stats for Arsenal

Last summer, Arsenal were looking to build on their second-placed Premier League finish after eventually missing out on the title despite leading the way for the vast majority of the campaign.

They subsequently decided to dip into the transfer market to try and bolster Arteta’s side ahead of the 2023/24 season – spending some serious money in the process.

Undoubtedly, the biggest deal completed during that window was the signing of midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham United for a club-record deal and one that set the record for the highest fee paid for an English player.

The Gunners paid a fee of £105m for the 25-year-old, surpassing the £72m they paid for winger Nicolas Pepe back in 2019 – a move that was a complete failure, with the attacker departing the club on a free transfer just a couple of years later.

However, the England international has been a phenomenal addition, making 60 appearances since his move to North London – scoring eight times in the process.

He’s bagged some key goals including against rivals Manchester United in stoppage time, whilst topping off a 6-0 victory against former side West Ham United last season.

Rice has brought the added quality needed for such a long period in midfield, but also having a positive effect in attacking areas, as demonstrated by his goalscoring tally since his record transfer to the Emirates.

He’s become the perfect box-to-box option for Arteta, providing a constant figure in the heart of the side, allowing the club to be competitive in the Premier League and potentially ending their two-decade wait for a league triumph.

However, his deal could potentially be eclipsed with the club targeting a move for a player in a position that they have been desperately trying to bolster in recent months.

Arsenal eyeing move for “world-class” talent

During the summer, Arsenal were chasing a striker for long periods of the window, with various options linked with a move to the capital, but ultimately they were unable to complete any deal for a new central option.

Players such as Benjamin Sesko and Victor Osimhen were both touted with moves to join Arteta’s side, but the latter pursued a move to Saudi Arabia which failed to materialise, whilst the former decided to stay put at RB Leipzig.

However, according to talkSPORT, the Gunners have a ‘long-standing interest’ in a deal to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle, and could potentially be handed a boost in their pursuit of the 25-year-old.

The “world-class” Sweden international, as dubbed by boss Eddie Howe, scored 21 league goals last season and has put multiple teams on red alert after stalling any potential new contract at St James’ Park, with no obvious sign of any progression in talks with the Magpies.

He does remain under contract until the summer of 2028, but his unwillingness to agree to a new deal could force Howe’s side into offloading their star player to avoid losing him on the cheap.

Any potential deal could eclipse the fee paid for Rice in 2023, with the talkSPORT report claiming that Arteta’s side are expected to push for a new number nine.

He could follow in the footsteps of one Arsenal legend, who captured the hearts of many during his time as a player in North London.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Isak could be Arsenal’s new Henry

Thierry Henry will arguably go down as one of the best Premier League players of all time after his eight-year stint at Arsenal which saw him score 228 times for the club – the highest of any player in their history.

He caught the eye with his ability to glide past defenders before finishing effortlessly, with his all-round attacking quality often on display for the supporters.

The £11m fee former boss Arsène Wenger paid for him back in the summer of 1999 looked to be an absolute bargain given his impact at the club – cementing himself as a legend forever.

However, in 2024, Arteta has the opportunity to sign his own version of the Frenchman in Isak with the Swede possessing very similar qualities to the now 47-year-old.

His 6 foot 3 frame could be deceiving, but he’s elegant with the ball often gliding past players as Henry did, with his finishing ability in the final third up there with the very best in the world – potentially catapulting the club to the Premier League title.

Isak’s current boss Howe, has also waxed lyrical about his starman, drawing comparisons between the Newcastle number 14 and the iconic Henry, who also donned the same number during his time in North London.

Whilst the deal would undoubtedly cost the club a pretty penny, any transfer for Isak would transform Arteta’s forward line – handing him the added ammunition that he’s been craving over the last few months.

His ability in the final third is demonstrated by his goalscoring tally from last season, with the 25-year-old outscoring every current Arsenal player in the Premier League last season.

India have called up two uncapped players in Railways medium-pacer Meghna Singh and Baroda left-hand batter Yastika Bhatia for all three formats for their tour of Australia in September and October. The T20I squad includes another uncapped player, 25-year-old pace-bowling allrounder Renuka Singh of Himachal Pradesh.Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad returns after missing the tour of England owing to a knee injury and Covid-19.The 22 playing personnel selected for the Australia tour have been spread across an 18-member consolidated squad for the three ODIs and the one-off pink-ball Test, and a 17-player squad for the three-match T20I series. ESPNcricinfo understands that the selection of an additional player for the tour of Australia, compared to 21 picked for the tour of England earlier this year, was down to allowing Gayakwad and T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur more time to make progress on their fitness before the warm-up fixture scheduled for September 15.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Gayakwad, who had been at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for several weeks for rehabilitation work around her injured right knee, entered the ongoing preparatory camp in Bengaluru directly from the NCA last week, while the first batch of probables had assembled on August 10. Kaur, meanwhile, returned to India last week, having ended her Hundred stint in the UK prematurely owing to a quad injury. She then joined the other four Hundred-returnees in the camp to round out the pool of 35 probables.Kaur and Gayakwad are understood to be clinically fit, but their ability to sustain workload for the longer formats is yet to be assessed, especially of Kaur, who is currently serving a mandatory six-day quarantine in the Bengaluru bubble. Given the squad for the Australia assignment was finalised on Monday, the possibility of deferring a decision on the inclusion of Kaur and Gayakwad was off the table. They are both, however, expected to train ahead of India’s departure on August 29.The injection of pace in Thakur and Meghna aligns with head coach Ramesh Powar’s thrust on widening the fast-bowling pool ahead of next year’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand.Yastika had got her maiden India call-up in March, for the limited-overs series against South Africa in Lucknow, but she warmed the bench all through.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Wicketkeeper-batter Indrani Roy, top-order batter Priya Punia, and medium-pacer Simran Bahadur, who were part of the 21-member squad that toured England in June-July, have been left out. None of them featured in the playing XI in any of the matches against England.India have also decided to split the wicketkeeping duties, with Taniya Bhatia selected for the Test and ODIs, and Richa Ghosh chosen for the T20Is.Before picking the final squad, the five-member selection panel met with Powar and several senior players in Bengaluru. Selectors Neetu David and V Kalpana are expected to be in the touring party to Australia, where the visitors will serve a mandatory 14-day hard quarantine. Meanwhile, Gargi Banerjee, the India manager for the tour of Australia, entered the biobubble in Bengaluru on Tuesday after a two-day delay, and is likely to be in quarantine through the best part of this week. She was felicitated in Kolkata on Saturday by the Cricket Association of Bengal for her appointment, causing the delay.India will begin the tour with three ODIs, after which they will play a day-night Test. There will be three T20Is to conclude the tour.Only Test and ODIs squad: Mithali Raj (capt), Harmanpreet Kaur (vice-capt), Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Punam Raut, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Yastika Bhatia, Taniya Bhatia (wk), Shikha Pandey, Jhulan Goswami, Meghna Singh, Pooja Vastrakar, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav, Richa Ghosh, Ekta Bisht.T20I squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (capt), Smriti Mandhana (vice-capt), Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Yastika Bhatia, Shikha Pandey, Meghna Singh, Pooja Vastrakar, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav, Richa Ghosh (wk), Harleen Deol, Arundhati Reddy, Radha Yadav, Renuka Singh.

Signed for £15m: Spurs hit the jackpot on Nuno signing who’s now worth £38m

Over the last couple of years, Tottenham Hotspur have shifted their focus to recruiting younger talent to improve the first-team squad rather than signing players for an immediate upgrade but providing no sell-on fee.

The summer window of 2021/22 saw the arrival of new boss Nuno Espírito Santo, with the former Wolves Head Coach tasked with taking the club to the next level.

He was backed in the transfer market, with owner Daniel Levy splashing upwards of £80m on new talent to try and establish the Lilywhites as a consistent top-four Premier League side.

However, the Portuguese boss would only last four months at the helm, taking charge of just 17 games before leaving Spurs – achieving a win percentage of 53%.

Whilst his appointment was a disaster, he made the right call by bringing one player to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – especially considering the impact he’s made since his transfer.

Pape Sarr’s time at Tottenham Hotspur

Midfielder Pape Matar Sarr joined Tottenham in a roughly £15m deal from Ligue 1 side Metz back in August 2021, before moving back to the French side on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Tottenham midfielder Pape Sarr.

However, he returned to the club ahead of the 2022/23 season, mainly operating as a squad player, making 14 appearances in all competitions – with 11 coming in the Premier League.

The arrival of Postecoglou at the start of 2023/24 saw a huge increase in first-team minutes for the Senegalese youngster, featuring in 34 league matches for a combined 2085 minutes – a near 10x increase from the season prior.

The “frightening” 21-year-old, as dubbed by talent scout Antonio Mango, has featured in all three league outings so far this campaign, starting against Newcastle United and Leicester City before coming on in the second half against Everton.

As a result of his excellent performances for the Aussie in the last two seasons, Sarr has seen his market value skyrocket – demonstrating the impact of the club’s new recruitment model.

Pape Sarr’s market value in 2024

Three years after his £15m move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Sarr has seen his value jump massively, with the midfielder having the potential to improve further given his tender age.

As per Transfermarkt, the Senegalese international is now valued at £38m – an increase of around 150% on the fee they paid for him three years ago.

His subsequent value is higher than that of Richarlison, who is now valued at £32m just a couple of years after his £60m move to North London.

His huge jump in value is a demonstration as to how successful the club’s recruitment can be, potentially handing them an edge in the hunt to once again secure Champions League football, as they look to develop talented prospects.

Postecoglou is a fantastic manager who can extract the best out of young talents, with Sarr one of the beneficiaries of his ability to work with up-and-coming stars, as evidenced by his soaring value.

This season is another great opportunity for the former Metz ace to build on his impressive season last time around, allowing him to gain more experience whilst also further increasing his market value.

INEOS now offered "extraordinary" league winner who’d love Man Utd move

After already reinforcing their backline with Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, Manchester United have now reportedly been offered the chance to sign a Premier League winner who'd complete a new-look defence.

Man Utd transfer news

It's been a summer full of positives at Old Trafford, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's first summer at the club featuring a refreshing transfer policy which has seen a mix of young players and stars at the top of their game arrive. De Ligt is arguably the standout among the arrivals, with the Dutchman arriving from Bayern Munich in an attempt to finally solve Erik ten Hag's defensive leak.

De Ligt was quick to express his delight over joining up with Ten Hag for the second time in his career, following an excellent spell together at Ajax, telling Manchester United's official website: “Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me and I cannot wait to work with him again. I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club.”

With two centre-backs and a right-back signed, all that the Red Devils are missing on their list of incomings is a left-back. Given concerns over Luke Shaw's ability to stay fit, however, it may not be long before United have a new-look defence altogether.

According to Fabrizio Romano, INEOS have now been offered the chance to sign Marcos Alonso, who would reportedly love a move to Manchester United after becoming a free agent at the end of his Barcelona contract earlier this summer.

Romano told GiveMeSport: “Marcos Alonso would love to go to Manchester United. He has been offered to Manchester United in recent weeks, but there is nothing really concrete or advanced into it so far.

“I think Manchester United will take some time before deciding who the player they really want to cover that position is, and will save their budget, save their money, and put their effort into a deal for the midfield. They need a new midfielder, and the idea is to make it happen as the next step in the summer transfer window.”

"Extraordinary" Alonso is worth the risk

Now 33 years old, Alonso may go against United's new transfer policy, but Dan Ashworth should make an exception for the Premier League winner, especially with Ferdi Kadioglu reportedly on his way to Brighton & Hove Albion over Old Trafford.

Described as an "extraordinary signing" by former Barcelona boss Xavi when he arrived in Spain, Alonso would bring a wealth of experience to the current Manchester United side, providing an ideal backup option for the injury-prone Shaw.

Given that he's currently a free agent too, the Red Devils wouldn't be left splashing the cash. Instead, they'd be getting themselves a bargain deal to solve a growing problem at left-back.
