Leeds United have made a strong start to the 2024/25 Championship season. After a heartbreaking 2023/24, which ended in playoff final agony against Southampton, the Whites are now second in the table, and no doubt desperate to get promoted back to the Premier League.
So far, Daniel Farke’s side have played 11 games, and sit on 22 points. They have lost just once all season, against Burnley, and have won six times.
The most frustrating thing so far has been the number of draws they have picked up. Leeds’ four draws so far are more than any other side in the top six of the Championship.
Nevertheless, Farke’s side have impressed this season, and it seems like they are surely well on their way to promotion. There have been some standout individual performances from the Whites, too, with Wilfried Gnonto one of the players who has particularly caught the eye.
Gnonto’s stats in 2024/25 so far
After remaining at the club despite strong rumours of a departure over the summer, Italian international Gnonto has maintained his impressive performances in a Leeds shirt and has been pivotal to Farke once again.
He has started all 11 Championship games so far this term, scoring twice and grabbing four assists. The 20-year-old is already approaching his goals and assists tally from last season, in which he managed 12 goal involvements in 44 games.
Arguably his best performance of the 2024/25 campaign so far came against Coventry City. That day at Elland Road, Gnonto managed to get a goal and assist to see his side to an impressive 3-0 victory. Stuart Rayner, chief football writer for The Yorkshire Post, gave the Italian an 8/10 rating for an “excellent individual performance”.
Although it has been a superb start to the season for the youngster, Fakre might well consider resting him before long, in order to manage his game-time and not overplay him. If that were to be the case, the perfect replacement is already waiting in the wings.
The Leeds star who could replace Gnonto
The player in question here is Wales international attacker Daniel James. The 26-year-old has had fleeting minutes due to a hamstring injury for the Whites this season, which kept him out of action for six games.
Leeds United's Dan James
With that being said, the former Manchester United winger has still played five times in the Championship. He has found the back of the net on one occasion so far, scoring against Sheffield Wednesday in a 2-0 victory at Hillsborough.
Leeds’ number seven has not started a game since returning from his hamstring strain, making two appearances off the bench. He was named in Farke’s lineup for the first three games of the season, however, and today’s clash with Bristol City could be the ideal game to play him from the start and look to continue building his match fitness.
The Welshman made his most recent appearance in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory against Watford. It was a game in which he replaced Gnonto, with just 18 minutes of the 90 loft to play.
However, the 26-year-old made an excellent impact, creating two chances in that time. As per Sofascore, there were just three of his teammates who created more across the entire game.

James is an electric winger who loves to run at opposition defenders. His devastating pace could wreak havoc on opposition defence, and Saturday’s clash with the Robins could be as good a time as any for Farke to unleash him.
Starting the winger, who was described as “underrated” by football statistician Statman Dave, would allow Gnonto to get invaluable rest and James to build up his match fitness again, which will be crucial as the season really hots up.
Leeds could find their next Raphinha by signing £17m sensation
Manchester City continued their perfect start to the 2024/25 campaign thanks to a 2-1 victory over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium.
Thomas Frank’s side presented some resistance to the Cityzens, and even took the lead, but could not stop the destruction of Erling Haaland as City went on to claim all three points.
It was a very early strike from Yoane Wissa which gave the Bees a shock lead at the home of the Premier League champions. The attacker got on the end of a bouncing ball in the box which City failed to clear, and headed home from inside the six-yard box to put his side in front.
However, the lethal Norway international had his say before too long, firstly getting on the end of a Kevin De Bruyne pass to fire home powerfully into the top left corner. Just over ten minutes later, Haaland scored again, this time latching onto a long pass from goalkeeper Ederson, getting into a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Mark Flekken and dinking home for 2-1 to City.
It was a superb performance from the Norwegian, who had good support from his teammates throughout the game as City continued their perfect start to the season.
Erling Haaland’s stats against Brentford
City’s number nine is simply inevitable. At this stage, the amount of goals the Norweigan striker is scoring on a weekly basis is getting quite ridiculous. Haaland simply cannot stop scoring, and he shows no signs of slowing down.
The striker has already scored nine goals this season, in four games. This is now the third time in those four games that he has scored more than one goal. His nine goals so far in the top flight are triple the amount of any other player in the Premier League this season.
The Manchester Evening News’ chief Man City writer Simon Bajkowski rated Haaland’s performance against Brentford a 9/10, which was unsurprisingly the highest rating from today’s game. He described the striker using one word, “outstanding”.
Indeed, the Norway centre-forward’s exceptional performance was reflected in his SofaScore stats. He had 25 touches of the ball and had four shots on target, also rattling the woodwork once. All that went along with his two goals, which proved to be the difference for the Cityzens.
Haaland was unquestionably superb today, and whilst he was the star of the show, plenty of his teammates also performed well against the Bees.
Ilkay Gundogan’s stats against Brentford
One of those players was City’s former captain, the returning Ilkay Gundogan. It was his first start since rejoining the club he skippered to a famous treble in 2022/23, and he was a shining light for Pep Guardiola in the middle of the park.
He certainly had an impressive impact on the game against Brentford today. Now donning the number 19 shirt rather than the eight that reflected his role in midfield during his first spell, he ran the show for the Cityzens.
According to SofaScore, the German was busy in midfield, having 74 touches, and completing 55 out of 58 passes, with a 95% accuracy. Gundogan also created four chances, although did not register an assist.

It was an excellent performance, a sentiment shared by Bajkowski, who gave him a 7/10 rating for his efforts. He explained that the midfielder improved throughout the game, and praised him for “linking well with Haaland” in the second 45 minutes.
For the Cityzens, it will no doubt be a huge boost to have Gundogan back at the club this season. If he continues to put in performances like he did against Brentford, they will be in a strong position to win a fifth-consecutive Premier League title.

Goals from Michail Antonio, Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta helped ease the pressure on Lopetegui, who said after the game: “I’m happy for the fans and the players too because they deserve this. It was a hard match, as all the matches in the Premier League are, but we did very well.
“We started very well, but suffered a very early equalising goal. I think after that we had a very good mentality, we kept strong and we deserved to score before we did get the second. In the last chance of the half we did score, and we kept going in the second half. We kept looking for goals and in the end we achieved a good victory.”
The Hammers and Lopetegui’s focus will now be on a trip across London to face rivals Tottenham Hotspur following the break, with a London Stadium clash against Manchester United rounding off the October schedule.
One player who West Ham will hope to have available is summer signing Fullkrug, who has missed the last five games with an ankle injury he picked up in the September international break.
West Ham source shares Niclas Fullkrug injury update
Prior to the Ipswich Town game, ExWHUemployee said that Fullkrug’s injury was taking longer than expected.
Claret & Hugh have now provided a new injury update on Fullkrug, citing rumours going round that the West Ham forward may need surgery. A high ranking West Ham source appeared to pour cold water on that claim, though, saying he is expected to be close for the Spurs game.
“I’ve heard nothing about our players needing operations, but anything is possible: Last I heard… expected to be on or near bench for Spurs.”

This will come as a welcome relief to those who saw the rumours stating the German may need surgery, and hopefully, he can remain fully fit heading into 2025.
The £90,000-a-week star was signed from Borussia Dortmund following a fine campaign in front of goal for the Bundesliga giants but has been limited to just 63 minutes in the Premier League over three substitute appearances so far.

Salah’s contract with Liverpool is set to run out in six months' time and the Egyptian superstar is now free to negotiate a free transfer with any potential suitors. The Premier League's top scorer has been very vocal about a lack of progress in negotiations over a renewal at Anfield, with Paris Saint-Germain now aiming to capitalise on the situation.

As per French journalist Romain Collet Gaudin, PSG have already offered Salah a lucrative three-year contract at Parc de Princes. The Ligue 1 giants are prepared to pay the 32-year-old €500,000-per-week in wages as they bid to make him their first marquee signing since the departure of Kylian Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid in the summer.
DID YOU KNOW?
As per the report, Liverpool are only willing to hand the Egyptian forward a new two-year deal. Additionally, their wage increase offer to Salah comes in lower than PSG's at €400,000-per-week.

Liverpool will likely have to up their standing offer if they want to keep Salah at Anfield beyond the end of the season. He is due back in action for Arne Slot's side in a huge Premier League clash against Manchester United on Sunday.
Wolverhampton Wanderers already have their eye on a double transfer ahead of the January transfer window, according to a new report.
The Old Gold had to be patient in the summer transfer window, as the majority of the club’s incomings didn’t arrive until the end of the window, which probably hasn’t helped the manager, and they have made a slow start to the new league season.
Wolves senior player now wants to leave after barely playing this season
A senior player could soon be leaving Wolves for a cheap fee.

Wolves brought in eight new players over the course of the summer, which is a high number of arrivals but was needed as they also let 13 players leave. The Premier League side saw Pedro Neto and Max Kilman leave the club to join fellow top-flight sides, and when January comes around, the departures may not be over.

It was reported on Tuesday that Spanish international Pablo Sarabia is keen to leave Molineux and move back to Spain. The 32-year-old is not considered a key player for the club anymore, and a move in the next transfer window could occur.
La Liga side Sevilla are said to be interested in re-signing the player, as they look to add more goals and creativity to the side after a poor start to the campaign. The Spanish side considers a deal for Sarabia to be a “low-cost operation," given the fact that he is now 32 and is in the final year of his contract at the club.
Sarabia has been with Wolves since January 2022, and in his time at the club, he has played 52 times in all competitions, scoring five goals and recording 10 assists. As well as Sarabia leaving Wolves, the Premier League side also have their eye on a couple of additions by the time January arrives.
Wolves eyeing double transfer in same position as £4m signing
According to The Athletic, relayed by Molineux News, Wolves are set to try and sign an experienced centre-back as well as target a new left back. The Premier League side were looking to add a centre-back to their ranks in the last window, as they eyed a deal for West Ham’s Nayef Aguerd, but it never materialised.
This report states that the club’s need to sign a centre-back hasn’t gone away, and it will be one of two positions they prioritise in January. The other position is left-back, as Rayan Ait-Nouri has made a stuttering start to the season, and he is their only natural choice in that position.
Wolves manager Gary O'Neil
This news comes after Wolves paid £4 million to French side Nantes to sign defender Bastien Meupiyou. The 18-year-old can play at centre-back as well as left-back, but he is likely going to need time to adapt before featuring for the first team, begging the question if they would have been better served spending that money on a ready made senior player.
The club currently have five options at centre-back, with the others being Craig Dawson, Toti, Santiago Bueno, and Yerson Mosquera.

Players who Spurs have sold or loaned out this summer

Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga, Ryan Sessegnon, Joe Rodon, Troy Parrott, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Emerson Royal, Bryan Gil, Alejo Veliz, Dane Scarlett and Oliver Skipp have all either been sold or loaned out by Tottenham so far this summer, with Postecoglou and his transfer chiefs seriously trimming the squad.
In their stead, Timo Werner, Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert have come in, but there are still a couple of senior players who could quit Spurs before the transfer cut-off on August 31.
Sergio Reguilon has been linked with a return to Man United as Erik ten Hag scours the market for new left-back options, and Fabrizio Romano claims the 27-year-old would relish an opportunity to make the move back to Old Trafford.
“Another player who would love to return to Manchester United is Sergio Reguilon," Romano said.

“He was already at the club one year ago and he would be really open to returning. Man United are really aware of his situation at Tottenham and that may be an opportunity again in the final days because he has to leave Tottenham in the final days.”
The Spaniard's exit appears to be one to watch, going by Romano's update, while Giovani Lo Celso also doesn't appear to feature in Postecoglou's plans. The Argentine World Cup winner, on £70,000-a-week, started just four Premier League games last season, making a further 18 appearances from the bench, and he won't want to stay on the fringes of this Tottenham squad for much longer.
Al-Qadsiah eyeing late swoop for Lo Celso who wants to leave Spurs
According to South American news outlet Ole, via Sport Witness, Saudi side Al-Qadsiah are among the contenders to sign Lo Celso, who wants to quit Tottenham in the next nine days.
Unai Emery, who worked with the attacking midfielder at Villarreal, is also keen to take him to Aston Villa – so Lo Celso's future will be very interesting to watch unfold.
“Gio was very good today, not just with his work rate but you could see his quality on the ball," said Postecoglou after a Lo Celso performance against Bournemouth last season.
"His passes through and the one through to Sonny was outstanding. We needed him today and we’re going to need him going forward because Sonny goes away now, Biss goes away, Pape goes away. So I thought he was a good contributor.”
Liverpool have yet to kick into gear in the transfer market this time around – although that's not for the want of trying.
In different circumstances, Arne Slot could already have his first new face in the door, with The Athletic having revealed that discussions had been held earlier this summer regarding a £75m move for Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon, with Joe Gomez in line to move in the other direction for £45m.
That pre-PSR deadline proposal ultimately didn't come to fruition, however, although that may not be the end of the saga, with rumours rife that another offer for the Englishman could emerge before the end of the window.
As evidenced by that £75m fee, the 23-year-old is likely to cost an arm and a leg as far as the Merseysiders are concerned, with there no harm in considering worthy alternatives who could arrive on the cheap.
Liverpool's potential Gordon alternatives
One name that has been doing the rounds of late is Juventus outcast, Federico Chiesa, with the Euro 2020 winner seeking a new home having been informed that he is not in the plans of new boss Thiago Motta in Turin.
As per CaughtOffside, Liverpool are believed to be among the suitors for the Italy international – alongside the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea – although no concrete offer has been made as yet.
Federico Chiesa in Italy training
The report outlines that the 26-year-old salary demands may prove a sticking point for any interested party, although to counterbalance that, the suggestion is that Juve would accept a bid of between £10m-£13m in the final two weeks of the window.
How Chiesa compares to Anthony Gordon
There's no denying that 2023/24 was a standout season for Gordon at St James' Park, with the boyhood Red having reached double figures for both goals and assists in the Premier League, while subsequently earning a place in Gareth Southgate's European Championship squad.
Liverpool target Anthony Gordon in action for England at EURO 2024.
The youngster's talent is unquestionable, yet it would be wrong to say he is the finished article, having scored just eight top-flight goals across the previous two campaigns combined.
Still a rather raw, rising star, Gordon cannot compete with the experience of Chiesa, with the Italian represent something of an upgrade in that sense, having regularly proven himself at the elite level.
The star of the show during the Azzurri's triumph three years ago, the wing wizard scored twice en route to the final, with compatriot Gigi Buffon even describing him as "impossible to stop" during the showpiece win over England.
While it has been a tale of injury woes since then, the £150k-per-week sensation still boasts 55 goal involvements in just 131 games for his current side, after previously chalking up 60 goals and assists in 153 outings for Fiorentina.
There are three years between the pair, but Gordon, meanwhile, racked up just 15 goals and assists in 78 games for the Toffees, while also failing to contribute at all during a loan stint at Preston North End – albeit while chipping in with 24 goal contributions in just 64 games for the Magpies.

As represented in the table above, it is rather tight with regard to the duo's respective records, with it perhaps coming down to Chiesa's elite level experience as to why he could represent a potential upgrade – having also registered eight goals and assists in just 13 career games in the Champions League.
Of course, landing a homegrown, local talent like Gordon would go down well at Anfield, yet the chance to land an attacking sensation like Chiesa on the cheap could be too good to turn down. Even said to be "like a young Luis Suarez character" by Joe Cole, this move is a no-brainer, surely?
