Celtic sold flop for just £3.5m, now he's more prolific than Idah & Kyogo

The Scottish Premiership trophy will once again be decorated in green and white this summer, barring anything drastic, although last week’s Old Firm defeat has showcased that this Celtic side are far from the finished article.

Indeed, the issue surrounding the Hoops’ centre-forward berth continues, with Brendan Rodgers no doubt in need of another body to lead the line, following Kyogo Furuhashi’s January departure.

The Glasgow giants have largely coped rather well even amid the Japanese striker’s abrupt exit, not least with Daizen Maeda leading the scoring charts with 13 league goals, although deploying the latter man in that central role is surely only a short-term solution.

Against Rangers, for instance, Maeda’s well-taken header actually came after he had been moved back out onto the flanks, with Adam Idah introduced at the break in place of Nicolas Kuhn.

The Republic of Ireland star does provide a useful focal point, in contrast to Maeda and Kyogo in that role, although a return of three goals from his last 17 top-flight outings makes for grim reading, not least considering his £9.5m price tag.

Those goalscoring woes, which have seen the 24-year-old score just 14 times all season, will likely only heighten the desire to sign a new number nine this summer.

Celtic's summer search for a striker

Amid his push to earn improved game time at international level, ahead of next year’s World Cup, Kyogo made the decision to leave Rodgers’ side to join struggling Ligue 1 outfit, Rennes, during the winter window.

That £10m sale has left a void that needs to be filled at the end of this season, with the Scottish champions having opted not to replace the 30-year-old immediately in January.

Rumours were rife regarding potential moves for the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho and Evan Ferguson, among others, although Rodgers and co were ultimately left empty-handed, albeit while bringing wing wizard, Jota, back into the fold to bolster the attack.

As reported last month, one January target who the Hoops could already be working on a deal for ahead of the summer is Brondby’s, Mathias Kvistgaarden, with the 22-year-old having been on the club’s radar over the last year so.

The Danish marksman has been in fine form in 2024/25 to date after netting 15 times in just 26 games in all competitions, having registered 56 goals and assists, in total, in 114 outings for his current side.

Reportedly valued at £13.5m during the January window, it could potentially take a record fee to land the prolific forward, with it yet to be seen whether that is a gamble that Rodgers and co are willing to take.

Celtic will no doubt be aware that recruiting promising young strikers from their homeland doesn’t always work out, just ask Patryk Klimala.

The Celtic flop who's more prolific than Kyogo & Idah

In the case of Kvistgaarden, there may be concerns over whether he can make that transition from Denmark to Scottish football, with the rising star having only turned out for Brondby in his career to date.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

A similar scenario occurred in the case of Klimala, with the 6 foot centre-forward making the move to Glasgow on a £3.5m deal in January 2020, having only played in his native Poland prior to that.

Klimala – who was 21 at the time of the move – was initially tipped for big things upon his arrival at Celtic Park, with ex-Celtic man Maciej Zurawski stating:

As it proved, he lasted just over a year at the club before moving to New York Red Bulls in April 2021, with Celtic at least managing to recoup the £3.5m they had spent on him in the first place.

In 28 games, Klimala had scored just three goals in all competitions during his time in Scotland, after failing to earn a regular role for himself ahead of the likes of Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths.

Four years on from his Celtic exit, however, and the 26-year-old has found his groove out in Australia, having joined A-League side Sydney FC back in September, on loan from parent club Slask Wraclow.

Former Celtic striker Patryk Klimala.

In just 26 games for his new side, Klimala has scored 14 times and grabbed a further five assists. Idah, meanwhile has hit 14 goals but from 44 games across all fronts, while Kyogo has scored just 12 times in 2024/25 to date.

Klimala is then even more prolific than his Celtic counterparts, having scored once every 1.85 games, while Idah has scored once every 3.14 games back in Glasgow.

It is then interesting to see the Pole’s journey from something of a goal-shy figure at Parkhead, to now shining elsewhere.

Romano: "Key player" for Man Utd and Amorim is "staying" at Old Trafford

A Manchester United player who is a “key player for Ruben Amorim” is staying at Old Trafford, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd and Amorim make it back-to-back wins with 3-0 win over Leicester

The Red Devils haven’t had a season to remember under both Erik ten Hag and now Amorim, however, they did make it back-to-back wins with a 3-0 victory at Leicester City on Sunday.

United followed up a Europa League success against Real Sociedad by easing to a win over the Foxes and former player and coach Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Goals from Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, sealed a welcome victory, however, United’s only chances of silverware between now and May come in the Europa League.

Preparations are already underway ahead of Amorim’s first full season in charge at Old Trafford, with a number of star players being linked with moves to Manchester.

Romano: INEOS already "making some calls" to sign key Man Utd upgrade

They’re already looking towards the summer…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 17, 2025

They include Barcelona’s Raphinha, with a £58m offer already made to sign the winger. United will also be looking to keep hold of their important players, and a new update has been shared on Fernandes’s Man Utd future.

Fabrizio Romano shares update on Bruno Fernandes’ Man Utd future

Fernandes, who signed a new Man Utd contract until 2027 back in August, was linked with a move to Barcelona and Bayern Munich last summer. The Red Devils captain himself recently admitted he had an offer to leave Man Utd last year.

“I sat with the club because I had an offer to leave. We talked about the possibility of me leaving the club or staying. They said what they wanted from me. I just asked if they still see me as part of the future of the club or not.”

Now, Romano, as reported by Give Me Sport, has revealed that Fernandes will be staying at Man Utd, claiming he “trusts the project” at Old Trafford and is “key” for Amorim.

“Yes, he signed a new deal 8 months ago as he trusts the project and he’s a key player for Ruben Amorim. He’s so important for United and he’s staying.”

This is a welcome piece of news for Man Utd, especially with Fernandes currently in fine form, scoring a hat-trick against Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

He’s got pace, height and skill and will present a real challenge for batters in all formats.”

Solskjaer thought Man Utd had the "next Carrick", but they sold him for £9m

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is a manager in Manchester United history who simply doesn’t get the flowers he deserves after the job he oversaw during his time at Old Trafford.

The former Red Devils striker took over back in December 2018 after the dismissal of José Mourinho, stabilising the ship and leading the club to their best Premier League finish in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The Norwegian led the club to a second-placed finish in 2020/21, before being dismissed just a couple of months into the following campaign, spending nearly three years at them.

Solskjaer achieved a 55% win rate during his time as manager, averaging 1.9 points per game within his tenure, leading the club in the right direction before his own dismissal from the Theatre of Dreams.

He worked closely alongside another former player at Old Trafford, with his assistant manager another former player who was certainly underrated during his playing career.

Michael Carrick’s time at Manchester United

Midfielder Michael Carrick was appointed as Solskjaer’s assistant during the Norwegian’s spell in Manchester, taking the leap into management after his super professional career as a player.

The Englishman joined the Red Devils way back in 2006 in a £13m deal from fellow top-flight side Tottenham Hotspur – a fee that would prove to be a bargain given his time at United.

Carrick would go on to make 464 appearances for the club over a 12-year stint in the North West, ending his career at the club before venturing into management – eventually becoming temporary manager after Solskjaer’s sacking.

During his time as a player, the now 43-year-old won five league titles, one Europa League and one Champions League, along with 11 other trophies – offering a consistent presence during Sir Alex’s reign.

He often doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his time at United, often being overlooked by many for his work ethic and superb passing ability, which often saw him register countless assists.

However, the club appear to have already sold one player who could emulate Carrick’s success at the club, potentially living to regret his departure – especially for such a minimal transfer fee.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

The Carrington academy setup has been infamous for producing a conveyor belt of talent, demonstrated by the Class of 92, with all of the graduates cementing themselves in Red Devils’ history.

The current first-team also highlights how impressive the youth setup is in Manchester, with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho just two players who have developed through the ranks and made an impact under Ruben Amorim.

However, one player who may have been sold too prematurely was midfielder James Garner, who had huge hopes of being a success with his boyhood club after breaking through during Solskjaer’s period in charge.

The academy graduate would only make seven first-team appearances, but it was enough for the Norwegian to rave about his displays, dubbing the youngster “the next Michael Carrick” – high praise indeed given his compatriot’s spell with the Red Devils.

He would spend 18 months on loan at Nottingham Forest, catching the eye with his box-to-box displays, registering eight goals and 10 assists over his two separate loan spells at the City Ground.

However, his long-standing affiliation with his boyhood side would come to an end in the summer of 2022, joining Everton on a permanent basis for an initial £9m – a bargain given his form at Goodison Park.

Garner has since made 69 appearances for the Toffees, showcasing his versatility, operating in the middle of the park, as well as right-back but still thriving despite the unnatural role.

The 23-year-old has been restricted to just six league appearances this campaign due to injury, but has still managed to impress, providing a beautiful pinpoint pass to Beto in the 4-0 win over Leicester City.

The £9m fee now appears to be way too cheap given his recent success away from Old Trafford, potentially having a huge role to play under Amorim during his time in charge.

However, their loss now appears to be Everton’s gain, with Garner looking like the next in a long line of academy players which the hierarchy have offloaded too soon.

Sunderland in talks over deal to sign £13m striker after Isidor nightmare

Sunderland are now in talks over a deal to sign a striker this month, with Regis Le Bris in favour of the move, according to a report.

Black Cats keen on a striker

The Black Cats are searching for a new striker this month, in order to strengthen their Championship promotion push, and they have identified a number of targets.

Southampton’s Ben Brereton Diaz was on Le Bris’ shortlist, with the Saints willing to offload the forward this month, but Sheffield United are leading the race for his signature, as he would only consider a move to his former club.

The Blades are also in the running for another Sunderland target, namely Leicester City’s Tom Cannon, and they are also in pole position for the 22-year-old’s signature, having now agreed a £13m deal with the Foxes.

As such, the Black Cats may be forced to move on to other options, and they could be well-placed to sign Westerlo striker Mathias Frigan, who they are believed to be seriously interested in signing.

There has now been a promising new update on Sunderland’s pursuit of Frigan, with Germanijak reporting they have now entered talks with Westerlo to discuss the terms of a deal (via Sport Witness).

This comes after Wilson Isidor, who has been fantastic for the club during his loan stay from Zenit, endured a horror evening at Burnley on Friday, seeing two late penalties saved in the same corner by James Trafford.

Le Bris is said to be strongly in favour of Frigan’s arrival, with the manager looking to bolster his squad to aid his side’s chances of returning to the Premier League.

The Championship promotion hopefuls want to sign the Croatian on a loan deal, with a conditional obligation to buy for a fee of €15m (£13m) if they achieve their goal of returning to the top flight.

The 21-year-old is very interested in moving to the Stadium of Light, which may make it easier to get a deal over the line.

Frigan could be a shrewd acquisition for Le Bris

The former Rijeka man didn’t have the best debut season in Belgium, scoring just four goals in 23 league games, but he has already managed to better that goal tally this term, picking up six goals and three assists in 20 outings.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has also previously lauded the starlet, likening him to former European Golden Shoe winner Ciro Immobile.

It would be a slight risk to sign Frigan, given that he is unproven in a major league, but a loan deal with an obligation to buy if they win promotion could be a shrewd way of bringing in an impressive striker with less risk. It would take some of the goalscoring pressure off Isidor’s shoulders at a delicate time for the youngster, who admitted Friday was the worst day of his life.

Rangers have struck gold on Ibrox gem who’s worth more than Lyall Cameron

Glasgow Rangers finally ended their away day woes in the Scottish Premiership, securing a relatively comfortable 3-1 victory over Dundee United at Tannadice on Sunday afternoon.

Philippe Clement’s men trailed to an early Sam Dalby effort as it appeared the Light Blues would once again slip on their travels. Before the interval, Mohamed Diomande netted a fine long-range strike to level things up.

Goals from Robin Propper and Cyriel Dessers in the second half saw the Ibrox side return to Glasgow with all three points, but Diomande was wrongfully sent off in the dying minutes.

In truth, it was a dreadful decision by referee Nick Walsh, but it shouldn’t take the shine away from how good Diomande was during the match.

The Ivorian is finally emerging into a player that is performing at a consistently high level, and he will be key for the Gers going forward.

Mohamed Diomande’s season in numbers

Diomande has missed just three matches for Rangers throughout the 2024/25 campaign, with one of them due to suspension.

During that time, the 23-year-old has scored five goals while registering four assists in all competitions under Clement.

His positional flexibility has seen the player operate either in a more advanced role as a number ten or in a defensive position, utilising his abilities in both positions.

Mohamed Diomande

He has impressed most in the Premiership. Along with his six goal contributions, Diomande has created four big chances, and averages one key pass while succeeding with one dribble per match, proving that he loves to get forward as much as possible from the heart of the pitch.

Defensively, the midfielder averages 1.1 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, recovers 4.1 balls per game and wins 54% of his ground duels. Judging by his heatmap (courtesy of Sofascore), Diomande covers a lot of ground, either trying to start an attack or providing cover for those bombing into the final third.

Mohamed Diomande

His performances have been impressive indeed, which has been reflected in his market value. According to Transfermarkt, the midfielder is now currently valued at £5m and this will only rise the better he performs over the coming months.

Despite having someone of this quality in his squad, Clement is always looking to add new talent to his first team. Will he be able to sign a player who is currently starring for another Premiership club this term?

Rangers eyeing move for Dundee starlet

A couple of weeks ago, the Scottish Sun reported that the Light Blues were considering making a pre-contract move to sign Dundee star Lyall Cameron, who was entering the final few months of his deal.

The report from the Sun claims that the Gers are leading the chase for Cameron’s signature, although there is plenty of attraction from other parties.

Indeed, Aberdeen have joined the fray, showing interest in launching their own move for the Dens Park talisman. He might get slightly more game time by joining the Dons, yet European football and a chance to win trophies are just a couple of the incentives on offer at Ibrox.

At the time of writing, Cameron is currently valued at just £850k by Transfermarkt, but should he make the move to Glasgow and continue the form he has displayed this season for the Gers, then there is no doubt his valuation will soar.

This could suggest that the Light Blues will have a wonderful chance of securing a significant profit on the Scot, especially if he begins to attract the attention of clubs from down south or abroad.

Market Movers

Last summer, Clement made a similar move by signing Connor Barron. Fast-forward a few months later and his value has risen significantly, reaffirming the rise Cameron could be about to enjoy if he moves to Glasgow.

Rangers' first Lyall Cameron

The Ibrox side had chased Barron’s signature for a while before finally signing their man last summer after he departed Aberdeen following the expiration of his contract.

During his spell with the Dons, the midfielder made 76 appearances for the club during his three full seasons at Pittodrie, quickly becoming one of the best young talents in Scotland, just as Cameron has shown throughout 2024/25.

Connor Barron Aberdeen

The Scot was lauded by Scotland U21 manager Scot Gemmill while playing at Aberdeen last season, who said: “Connor is very impressive on and off the pitch the way he conducts himself.” And the midfielder has wasted no time in trying to make his mark for Rangers.

While he may have struggled to make the starting XI in recent weeks due to the form of Nico Raskin and Diomande, with both players shining as a midfield duo, Barron has still made 33 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Attacking the goal isn’t exactly his forte, but his ability to control possession from the middle of the pitch is exactly why Clement brought him to Rangers in the first place.

Indeed, his 90% pass success rate in the top flight proves this, while the former Aberdeen starlet wins 3.2 total duels per game along with averaging 1.8 tackles per game in the Premiership.

He is still raw and developing all the time, but if Clement can manage the midfielder, there is no doubt he can be a star for the club over the next few years.

Connor Barron's market value in 2025

Although he joined upon the expiration of his contract, Rangers had to pay Aberdeen a compensation fee of around £600k.

This is small change, however, especially considering his valuation at the time of writing. According to Transfermarkt, Barron is now worth £2m and this figure has been rising ever since he arrived in Glasgow last summer.

It is evident that the club have struck gold on Barron. While he is undergoing a tough spell right now, he needs to continue to work hard and the midfielder will get his chance.

Furthermore, Barron is worth over £1m more than Cameron at this moment in time, which proves just how good a signing the youngster has been for the Gers.

Rangers have struck gold on "thunderous" star who is worth more Fernandes
