Contact made: Rangers in talks to sign young defender seen as future star

Rangers’ summer transfer business may not be over yet, as Ibrox chiefs are in talks over signing a promising in-demand talent.

Philippe Clement’s side have been very busy over the course of this summer, as Rangers not only look to close the gap to arch-rivals Celtic, but they will be bidding to move past them and return to the top of the Scottish Premiership. To do just that, Clement has obviously felt that changes were needed when it came to the playing squad, as there have been several comings and goings.

The Gers are still looking to improve their team before next week’s deadline.

The Gers have so far brought in eight new players in this transfer window, such as Robin Propper, Mohamed Diomande, Vaclav Cerny, and Liam Kelly all joining the club. But while there have been plenty of arrivals at the club, the Scottish side has also seen many players leave the club in different capacities.

Players such as Sam Lammers, John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Connor Goldson and Ryan Jack have all left the club, to name just a few. Those departures could have been joined by a high-profile player, as it was revealed earlier this week that striker Cyriel Dessers was close to leaving the football club.

It has been claimed that Rangers and MLS side Atlanta United were in talks about a deal that would see Dessers join the American side. According to the report, a deal was close to being agreed between the two clubs for a fee of around $6 million (£4.6 million), but the transfer eventually broke down as Dessers wasn’t keen on joining the MLS side.

Cyriel Dessers

As well as rumours regarding Dessers leaving the club, it has also been reported this week that Rangers have Fiorentina's Josip Brekalo on their transfer radar after he has been made available for a move by the Serie A side. Teams from the UK are said to have made contact regarding signing Brekalo, but they are still considered far from being completed, which may state that the Gers have not made an offer for the player just yet. But as well as potentially looking to sign Brekalo, Rangers could be about to add a promising talent to their ranks.

Rangers are looking to sign Sebastian Lochhead

According to Football Insider, Rangers are among the clubs looking to sign Dundee sensation Sebastian Lochhead. The report states that the young centre-back is seen as one of the best talents to recently emerge from Scotland.

This report goes on to add that while Rangers are interested in signing the defender, they also face competition from teams such as Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham, Burnley, and Norwich City.

Lochhead has made it onto Dundee’s first-team bench this season, and he has played twice in the Challenge Cup in the early parts of this campaign. Rangers, as well as the other interested clubs, are said to have contacted Dundee about signing Lochhead, and discussions are ongoing with all the clubs as one of them tries to win the race. All the interested clubs, including those at Ibrox, see the player as a future star and are keen to tie him down to a professional contract once he turns 17.

After Guehi: Newcastle make contact for £25m ace who’s better than Madueke

During the ongoing transfer window, Newcastle United have been on the hunt for defensive reinforcements to avoid a repeat of last season which saw Eddie Howe’s side plagued with injuries.

Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles were sidelined with ACL injuries, with Kieran Trippier also struggling with fitness at the same stage of the campaign, resulting in a makeshift backline – resulting in the Magpies missing out on a European spot.

Lloyd Kelly has already arrived on Tyneside, with Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi edging ever closer to a move to St James’ Park before the start of the Premier League campaign next weekend.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

A report from Football Insider claimed that the club have already agreed personal terms with the 24-year-old, leaving the two sides to agree a fee for his services in order for a deal to reach its completion.

With the defensive unit nearing another new addition, attention will turn to the forward line, with Howe’s side in the mix to sign one player who could have a huge impact on Tyneside.

Newcastle make contact to sign £25m talent

According to Italian outlet Quotidano Sportivo, Newcastle have made contact over the signing of Fiorentina winger Nicolas Gonzalez ahead of a potential transfer this summer.

Newcastle target Nicolas Gonzalez in action for Argentina.

The 26-year-old also has admirers from Juventus, Nottingham Forest and Brighton, with Spanish side Atlético Madrid also making an enquiry about a move for the Argentinian international.

The forward has previously been the subject of an offer from fellow Premier League side Brentford, but no move ever materialised, with a move to England still on the cards this summer.

The report states that the Serie A side are holding out for a fee in the region of €30m (£25m) to part ways with the forward, who’s expressed his desire for a new challenge ahead of this season.

He would be an excellent option for Howe to go after in the hunt to sign a new right-winger, proving to be a better talent than one player recently touted with a move to the club.

Why Gonzalez would be a better option than Madueke for Newcastle

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke has constantly been linked with a move to Newcastle in recent months, with it even being claimed that he has agreed personal terms over a move to St James’.

Noni Madueke.

However, since the news, the deal has yet to progress, with it unknown whether it will be finalised or edge closer to completion in the coming days.

The recent rumours about Gonzalez could be a good thing if the Madueke deal has hit a standstill, with the Argentinian talent a better option for Howe’s side than the Englishman.

The “magnificent” ace, as described by broadcaster Carlo Garganese, managed double the amount of goal contributions last season, whilst also averaging more shots on target per 90 – providing a greater threat than Madueke in forward areas.

He also averaged more progressive passes, showcasing his ability to find his teammate, offering added goals to the likes of Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak alongside his own goalscoring tally.

Whilst it’s unknown what fee would be required to prise Madueke away from Stamford Bridge, Gonzalez would undoubtedly be a cheaper option coming from Serie A, whilst also giving Howe a better player at his disposal in forward areas.

He could prove to be the missing piece in Newcastle’s attacking puzzle, but they will have to fend off stiff interest from elsewhere if they are to secure his services this summer.

Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool hold talks to sign £60,000-a-week star for Slot

Liverpool have held talks with an "unbelievable" player over a summer move to Anfield, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, but there is a potential stumbling block.

Liverpool transfer news

It is going to be fascinating to see who the Reds sign in the summer transfer window, with Arne Slot in as new manager and the likes of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes coming in to drive the club's recruitment.

A worrying "multi-million" offer for Alisson from Saudi Arabia has reportedly emerged recently, and should the Brazilian make a shock departure from Anfield ahead of next season, Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is seen as an ideal replacement. The 23-year-old has shone for Georgia at Euro 2024 and is a 'keeper with huge potential.

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has also emerged as an option for Liverpool, with contact made for the England international who is a boyhood Reds supporter, and he could be considered an ideal choice to come in for Luis Diaz, should the Colombian suddenly complete a summer move to Barcelona.

The Merseysiders have also reportedly enquired about Real Madrid's highly-rated teenager Arda Guler, but president Florentino Perez is reluctant to sell such a prized asset. A loan move is mooted, but it doesn't feel too likely at this stage.

Liverpool hold talks to sign "unbelievable" attacker

Taking to X on Saturday, Romano said that Liverpool have held talks with Newcastle over a summer switch for Gordon after their aforementioned contact. Still, the deal is only likely if the Magpies drop their asking price:

"Liverpool appreciate Anthony Gordon, talks took place with Newcastle in the last 48h but NO agreement on the fee/value. The only way to re-activate the option is if Newcastle drop price…or no chance. NUFC prefer to sell other players like Minteh rather than Gordon."

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

It does appear as though Gordon could be open to sealing a summer transfer to Liverpool, given his ties to the club, and he has come on so much as a footballer in the past year or so that he could be a brilliant addition. Reports from Football Insider have even claimed that he could have a Liverpool medical in Germany while at Euro 2024, should an agreement be reached.

The £60,000-a-week attacker registered 21 goal contributions (11 goals and 10 assists) in 34 appearances in the Premier League last season, while Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes has called him "unbelievable". Similarly, Eddie Howe has waxed lyrical about his player, hailing his attitude:

"From day one when he arrived at the club, you could see the passion he had and his desire to achieve and be successful. He puts the work in every day and sometimes we have to go and get him off the training pitch. Up against a very good defender today in [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka he was very good again, physically he was so good today. It was a really good battle between the two of them. I am delighted he is scoring the goals now and getting the recognition he deserves."

Chelsea ready to rival Liverpool for £27.5m star who's Havertz 2.0

They are trying to hijack Liverpool’s move

ByJoe Nuttall Jun 29, 2024

Whether Liverpool manage to strike a deal for Gordon remains to be seen – it looks unlikely, as things stand – but at 23, there is a lot more to come from him, and he could offer more attacking end product down the left flank.

Bumrah and Ashwin run through Australia on day one

27,615 spectators (itself a triumph for many reasons) the ground reverberated to the excitement of what could be about to unfold, but debutant Shubman Gill and the experienced Cheteshwar Pujara took the sting out of the mini session – aided by Gill being dropped on 4 at slip by Marnus Labuschagne – to the extent that they scored at three-and-a-half an over.Australia’s total followed their 191 first innings in Adelaide as ball continued rule in the early stages of the series, the opening day of this Test coming on an MCG surface that offered more encouragement than any in recent memory. Those planning to attend the fourth day will be a touch nervous.Bumrah was excellent throughout, Ashwin got the better of Steven Smith for the second time in the series (Smith’s first Test duck in four years) and Siraj, filling the shoes of Mohammed Shami, bowled with pace and movement, his second spell reading 9-4-16-2 including a classic working over of fellow Test rookie Cameron Green.Ashwin was outstanding, both holding the scoring rate – he conceded just 1.46 runs per over – and claiming three of the top seven having been introduced in the 11th over by stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane who was another to have an impressive day both with bowling and fielding tactics. The dismissals of Smith, Labuschagne and Travis Head were all perfectly executed plans. The opening wicket of the day was also a working over as Joe Burns battled outside off stump before getting a thin edge against Bumrah in the fifth over. While he was far from alone in struggling, if David Warner returns for the third Test somebody will have to stand aside and it may need another show of faith from the selectors.Mohammed Siraj is thrilled after dismissing Marnus Labuschagne•Getty Images

Briefly it looked as though Matthew Wade would add more pressure onto the debate as he dominated the early scoring with crisp, confident driving of the type Warner excels at, but he undid the good work on the stroke of drinks when he tried to launch Ashwin over the leg side. However, the dismissal owed everything to the fielding brilliance of Ravindra Jadeja who held onto the catch over his shoulder despite a near collision with Gill, and after taking the ball was still able to avoid trampling his team-mate.Smith laboured 29 balls for 1 in the first innings in Adelaide but was unable to get off the mark this time when he glanced a delivery off his pads to Pujara at leg slip who held a sharp chance. The hands he found with such dramatic effect in the one-day series a few weeks ago have momentarily gone missing. Australia were 38 for 3.For 28 overs either side of lunch, Labuschagne and Head did a solid repair job although Labuschagne looked for all the world to have gone lbw on 26 when he was sweeping Ashwin only for the ball-tracker to show the delivery clearing the stumps. There were signs that the initial storm had been weathered when Head, especially, started to find scoring a little easier but it proved an illusion.Rahane had opted not to bring Bumrah back when it looked a prime moment for the strike bowler, but when he did the impact was not long in coming as, in an over that included two no-balls, he found Head’s outside edge from an around-the-wicket line which has often troubled the left-hand batsman and the captain took a sharp catch around fourth slip.Labuschagne has scored useful runs this series but has not looked as settled as his prolific 2019-2020 summer and has certainly had to work harder for them. The scoring seized up against the accuracy of Ashwin and Siraj with 10 runs in eight overs before Labuschagne clipped Siraj towards leg gully where fellow debutant Gill continued India’s good catching day.It was clear Tim Paine, who survived a borderline run out on 6 when he was saved by a missing frame, wanted to provide more urgency, but it was a struggle for Green who kept hitting the field and he fell to a perfect set up. Siraj sent down a series of outswingers before bringing one back into Green’s pads. The control and precision of the dismissal from Siraj capped a superb first day for him in Test cricket.Australia’s hopes of counterattacking were hit further in the next over when Paine became the latest to be caught behind square, turning Ashwin to leg slip. Without their captain to marshal them as he did in Adelaide, it was a tall order for the last three wickets to be expected to lift the total too far, but Nathan Lyon’s bludgeoned 20 took them to the brink of 200.The possibilities generated by Starc’s early response had dissipated a little by the close, but India’s batting line-up should face their own stern examination tomorrow. Their hopes in the series could rest on how they come through.

Monchi now considering going against Emery to sell £60m Aston Villa star

Whilst it's been a fairly positive summer transfer window for Unai Emery so far, Aston Villa sporting director Monchi is now reportedly considering the sale of one of the Spaniard's best players.

Aston Villa transfer news

The sale of Douglas Luiz aside, Aston Villa have arguably won the transfer window so far in the Premier League. The Villans have so far welcomed the likes of Ross Barkley, Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior, whilst their biggest signing could yet arrive in the form of Amadou Onana, with a deal reportedly agreed with Everton.

The Belgian will instantly replace Luiz and hand Emery the ultimate boost for years to come at the heart of his midfield. But as a big-money signing arrives, the Midlands club could be set to show the door to a crucial cog in the Spaniard's attack.

According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Monchi is now considering the sale of Moussa Diaby to Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad due to the player being eager to move, which will see the sporting director go against Emery to bid farewell to a player the manager reportedly rates highly.

Dream for Onana: Aston Villa could sign £34m “duel monster”

The Midlands outfit has been busy indeed this summer.

ByAngus Sinclair Jul 17, 2024

Given that Diaby has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Saudi club, Monchi may personally decide it is best to cash in if Al Ittihad match Villa's £60m price tag this summer.

Diaby, of course, only arrived in the Midlands a year ago, before enjoying an impressive debut season. Yet, just one summer later, he could be set to become the latest Premier League player to swap English football for Saudi riches.

"Strong" Diaby was only just getting started

Losing Diaby just a year on from his Premier League arrival would deal Emery and his Aston Villa side a disappointing blow after qualifying for the Champions League last season. The former Bayer Leverkusen man was arguably only just getting started, scoring 10 goals and assisting a further nine in a solid debut campaign. Nonetheless, reports suggest that he has failed to resist the temptations that a move to the Saudi Pro League offers.

The winger will take some replacing, with the praise of Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes summing the 25-year-old up. He said via The Athletic: “Moussa Diaby is an extremely fast, technically strong striker whose qualities suit our game down to the ground."

It seems as though Villa's search for a replacement has already started, however, following links to the likes of Jaden Philogene. The former Villan could reunite with his boyhood club this summer in a full circle moment after an incredibly impressive campaign in the Championship with Hull City. In one swoop, Monchi could make profit and welcome a familiar face back to Villa Park this summer.

Jaden Philogene for the England U21s

The domino effect that Diaby's exit could cause is certainly one to keep an eye on this summer.

'Won't be surprised if Chennai Super Kings continue with MS Dhoni as captain' – Gautam Gambhir

“CSK is CSK is because of the relationship between the owners and the captain”

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Oct-2020Gautam Gambhir believes that despite the Chennai Super Kings enduring its poorest season in IPL history this time in the UAE, the franchise will retain MS Dhoni as their captain in 2021 because of the “fabulous relationship” they share.”You’re putting me in a fix. Now that’s a tough question. It up to the franchise. What he has done for the franchise and how the franchise actually deals with MS and treats MS is a fabulous relationship,” Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo in response to a question on the leadership of the Super Kings after a season where they could well end up finishing bottom of the table. “And that is how every franchise should deal with their captain, who has delivered for them.”Dhoni’s future as player and as captain have come under severe scrutiny after the Super Kings became the first team to be eliminated from the playoffs’ race this IPL despite starting with a victory over defending champions the Mumbai Indians. They have since lost eight games and won just three more. And Dhoni is among several senior batsmen who have struggled to find form.Gambhir felt that the relationship Dhoni and the Super Kings have developed since the inaugural season (2008), when he was bought by the franchise and appointed captain, was a unique one. And the “mutual respect” they shared, Gambhir pointed out, was the reason the Super Kings have been one of the most successful teams in the IPL – three titles (only behind the Mumbai Indians’ four) in addition to winning the Champions League T20 twice.

I keep saying that CSK is CSK because of the relationship between the owners and the captain. They have given all the freedom to MS, and MS has received all the mutual respect from the owners as well. So I would not be surprised if they continue with MS and MS plays till the time he wants to play.Gautam Gambhir

“MS has won them three [IPL] trophies, couple of Champions Leagues, he has made them one of the top successful sides in the IPL after Mumbai Indians,” Gambhir said. “So CSK saying they are going to continue with MS – it is just the relationship, it is just the mutual respect. That’s why MS has been so loyal (to the Super Kings). That’s why MS has given everything: heart and soul, his sweat, sleepless nights – I’m sure he must have had sleepless nights while he has continued captaining CSK.”I know people talk about that you should not be emotional, but then there is a connect. You’ve got to appreciate what the captain or a player has done for your franchise, how much hard work he has put in, because it is not easy being the captain of any franchise and that also for a such a long period of time.”The Super Kings management has said that Dhoni would be retained at the next mega auction, which is likely to be pushed to 2022 with the 2021 IPL scheduled to begin next April. There is a likelihood of a mini auction taking place, but Gambhir was confident that Dhoni’s position was not in doubt for 2021.”He deserves that much of appreciation from the owners,” Gambhir said. “I keep saying that why CSK is CSK is because of the relationship between the owners and the captain. They have given all the freedom to MS, and MS has received all the mutual respect from the owners as well.”So I would not be surprised if they continue with MS and MS plays till the time he wants to play. And then next year he still continues to be the captain and have a much different squad than what he has this time around.”

Harbhajan Singh not to travel with CSK squad to UAE on Friday

Harbhajan Singh will not be leaving for Dubai with the rest of the Chennai Super Kings players on Friday due to personal reasons. ESPNcricinfo understands that he will arrive a week or ten days later than the squad in the UAE ahead of the 2020 IPL.The 40-year-old offspinner will not be in Chennai when the franchise boards its flight after a five-day training camp in the city. Singh’s late arrival will make it five players for the Super Kings who won’t be part of the squad when it first arrives in the UAE. Faf du Plessis and Lungi Ngidi, who will arrive in early September from South Africa, and Imran Tahir, Mitchell Santner and Dwayne Bravo who are playing in the CPL, are the others. Ravindra Jadeja had also missed the camp in Chennai due to personal reasons, but he will be on the flight on Friday. The Super Kings have been proactive in their efforts to begin training as soon as possible, and had even sought to begin their conditioning camp as early as August 9 in the UAE, more than a month before the tournament begins on September 19. The chief reason behind this was the fitness of their squad, which has the oldest average age in the tournament and has a mix of retired and inactive players.ALSO READ: Ponting promises ‘hard conversation’ with Ashwin on running out non-strikers backing upSingh is one such player, having last played a competitive match in May last year, for the Super Kings in the IPL final which they lost by one run to Mumbai Indians. He was their third-highest wicket-taker last season, with 16 wickets in 11 matches at an economy rate of 7.09. Another key player, Suresh Raina, also last played in that fixture, whereas MS Dhoni’s last match was during India’s World Cup semi-final loss last year.Given these concerns around fitness and preparedness, the Super Kings were the first team to begin their training camp even in the pre-covid world. Senior players like Raina and Ambati Rayudu had begun training as early as December 2019 to get in shape for the tournament that was originally scheduled to begin on March 29. There won’t be quite as much time for this edition, which will comprise 60 matches and last 53 days. The Super Kings also plan to travel with exclusive net bowlers, mainly comprising first-class, Under-19 and Under-23 state-level players for practice sessions in the UAE. Singh will otherwise be part of a spin-heavy Super Kings attack, featuring Jadeja, Tahir, Santner, Karn Sharma and Piyush Chawla.

Chelsea contact former manager in last few days as Pochettino exit nears

Chelsea have made contact with a former manager in the last few days as Mauricio Pochettino looks "inclined" to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of this season, according to a new report.

Chelsea's very mixed season as pressure surrounds Pochettino

The Blues could actually still qualify for the Europa Conference League this season after a few great results in recent months, but they're also set to go trophyless despite spending over £400 million last summer.

Fabrizio Romano says in-form player will leave Chelsea with Thiago Silva

He won’t be here for 2024/2025.

ByEmilio Galantini May 2, 2024

There have been a few success stories from Pochettino's debut season, like the stellar form of Cole Palmer, but pressure has surrounded the manager's position amid calls from supporters to go in a different direction for next campaign.

Since their 4-2 defeat to Wolves, it can be argued that Chelsea have seriously picked up form overall, but a recent 5-0 loss to Arsenal highlights just how far behind they are from England's elite – regardless of the quality players in their squad.

Chelsea's 2-0 win over London rivals Spurs last night will ease some of the murmurs around Pochettino, but the Argentine himself has admitted that he's at the mercy of club chiefs ahead of next campaign.

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

Aston Villa 2-2 Chelsea

Arsenal 5-0 Chelsea

Man City 1-0 Chelsea

Chelsea 6-0 Everton

"Enough is enough. All managers need time to translate their ideas and philosophy," said Pochettino on his future at Chelsea.

"It's not my decision [if I get time]. I don't know [if I am being judged by the owners]. It's difficult to see every single week that I am under scrutiny and judgement. It's not my decision whether to be here or not to be here [next season].

"I can't say nothing. What I can say is if after the decision, if we want to match the history of Chelsea it's a lot of work to do. We'll see if we have time to build this way."

Reports suggest that Chelsea have been doing their due-diligence in the event they part company with Pochettino, and a few big name managers have been linked with replacing the former Tottenham fan favourite.

Indeed, Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim is one of them, while other media sources have stated that Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is a firm favourite for the Chelsea job.

Chelsea contact Conte in last few days with Pochettino exit likely

According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, as relayed by Calcio Napoli 24, another candidate is former boss Antonio Conte.

Currently out of work, he didn't exactly leave Chelsea on the best of terms, but it is believed the board have got back in touch with him. Indeed, Repubblica stated that Chelsea contacts with Conte's entourage took place in the last few hours of Wednesday.

Former Tottenham manager Antonio Conte

This comes as the west Londoners are "inclined" to part company with Pochettino at the end of this season, and a "profitable summit" has taken place with Conte. It's also stated that Napoli and AC Milan's interest in appointing Conte has cooled, even if his will is to remain in Italy.

The 54-year-old has won seven major trophies across managerial spells at Inter Milan, Juventus and, of course, Chelsea – most recently leaving Tottenham after a fiery press conference slamming the club.
