India suffer their third T20I series whitewash

Glenn Maxwell has joined Colin Munro on three T20I hundreds, behind only Rohit Sharma’s four

Bharath Seervi27-Feb-20194- Higher individual scores while chasing in T20Is than Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 113 in Bengaluru. The highest is Evin Lewis’ 125 not out, which was also against India, in Kingston in 2017. There has been only one other century in chases in T20Is in India: Chris Gayle against England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai during the 2016 World T20.2- Centuries for Maxwell while chasing in T20Is. No other Australia batsman has scored even one in a chase. Maxwell has four of the top eight scores by Australia batsmen in chases. KL Rahul is the only other batsman to have scored two hundreds while chasing in T20Is. Maxwell is tied second on most centuries in T20Is with three tons, with Colin Munro. Only Rohit Sharma has four centuries.ESPNcricinfo Ltd3- Instances of India losing every match in a bilateral T20I series of two or more matches. The other two defeats were: against New Zealand in 2008-09 and South Africa in 2015-16. This is the third consecutive series that India have not managed to win. Before these three, India had won six successive bilateral series.169- Runs by Maxwell in this series – the most by a batsman in a bilateral series against India. The previous highest was Shane Watson’s 151 in a three-match series in 2015-16. Maxwell scored 56 in the first game of this series.2- Bigger targets successfully chased down against India than the 191 by Australia in this match. South Africa won chasing 200 in Dharamsala in 2015, which is the biggest. This is Australia’s fourth-highest successful chase.1050- Runs for Maxwell in the second innings in T20Is, behind only Virat Kohli’s tally of 1231. Maxwell averages 37.50 when chasing against 29 when batting first. He has two hundreds and six fifties while chasing but only one 50-plus score in 18 innings when batting first.

Pakistan's cycle of horrors in Australia

Pakistan’s batting collapse on the second day of the day-night Test at the Gabba was a continuation of their woeful history on Australian pitches

Osman Samiuddin16-Dec-2016More bounce, more pace, a little bit of nip, some swing, plenty of spin, lots of edges, not many runs and pristine catches behind the wickets: the Pakistani batting experience in Australia pretty much writes itself.A score of 8 for 97 does not just happen. It is as much an unavoidable response to history and the inevitable continuation of it, as it is to geography. No country in the world has so exposed Pakistan’s batting as Australia; no country provides conditions as diametrically opposed to those a Pakistani batsman finds in his own country. South Africa may well come to occupy that space but the sample size, dramatic as it is, is still limited.Pakistan’s finest and Pakistan’s worst have stood united over the years in their inability to change what happened in Brisbane this evening, reaffirming Australia as the big, vast shop of batting horrors in Pakistan’s world.106 all out, Sydney, January 1973
Before he left for the Australian tour of 1972-73, Mushtaq Mohammad’s elder brother Hanif told him it was the best country in which to play cricket. Given Hanif scored 104 and 93 in the only Test he played there, Mushtaq may have forgiven him for the dummy he was sold.It was on this tour that Pakistan’s enduring experiences of Australia were formalised. They were whitewashed for a start, in which the last two Test defeats were especially traumatic. Sydney, where they were chasing 159 for a consolation win, was a true horror show.A naturally attacking batting order was paralysed, to the extent that even a crocked Dennis Lillee, hampered by a bad back, was allowed to bully them. Having scored at over three an over in the first innings, they poked and edged their way towards the target at less than two runs an over. That was all Max Walker needed, swinging his way through the order, hastening a collapse that began at 83-3 (he took 5 for 3 in 30 deliveries at one stage). “We invited pressure on ourselves by playing too cautiously,” Mushtaq wrote years later in his autobiography. And so a template was set.62 all out, Perth, November 1981
Javed Miandad’s first away tour as captain was no gift and it came at the end of a period in which the Australian-Pakistan rivalry was at its most compelling, and abundant – this was the fifth of six series in a decade from 1972-73.Pakistan had scored runs in the warm-up games but the Tests began badly, as it generally does for them in Australia. Miandad admitted later that the sight of a hard, fast, and green WACA pitch gave him and his team reason to pause. They began well, putting Australia in and dismissing them for 180. Then they came out to bat and, well, the thing that people forget about the 62 all out is that it actually represented a bit of a recovery. Pakistan were 8 for 26 at one stage, before Sarfraz Nawaz came out and bashed 26 on his own to drag them away from the ignominy of equaling the lowest Test total. Dennis Lillee and Terry Alderman did the damage, in predictable manner, flirting with those outside edges – Rod Marsh took five catches behind the stumps.Lucky for Pakistan, Miandad and Lillee then did this and now, people don’t really remember that Test for the batting.107 all out, Melbourne, January 1990
Another first Test, another ruthless expose of a batting line-up. In the run-up to this series, Pakistan could easily lay claim to being one of the best Test sides in the world. They had not lost a Test series in five years and had drawn two series with best side in the world. Australia were yet to really become the great side they would later in the decade, even though they had an Ashes thumping behind them.In Shoaib Mohammad and Javed Miandad they had two batsmen with averages of 50.48 and 61.79 respectively in that period. Imran Khan was averaging nearly 46, Ijaz Ahmed was shaping up into a feisty young batsman and Wasim Akram’s batting was emerging. With a batting line-up this secure, it was one of Pakistan’s best chances of getting a result in Australia.None of it mattered as they got rolled over by Terry Alderman, Carl Rackemann and Merv Hughes although, as ever, they took their sweet time about it, batting one delivery less than 66 overs. Seven of the wickets fell to catches behind the stumps. The spat between Dennis Lillee and Javed Miandad took away some of the attention from Pakistan’s horrid collapse in Perth•PA Photos97 all out, Brisbane, November 1995
“Our batsmen get undone by the height of the ball – at least ten inches higher – and our bowlers get too excited and bang it in short.” This is not a prediction of an assessment Misbah-ul-Haq may make after this Test, but the words of Wasim Akram about the 1995-96 tour, the last time Pakistan won a Test in Australia.Pakistan had enough on their plate at the time to be distracted. Allegations about corruption were flying around all over the place. Salim Malik, the main but not sole accused, had been exonerated by a domestic inquiry but was in the squad and the subject of much scrutiny in Australia. This time, however, it wasn’t pace that undid them. England might like to think that Shane Warne tormented them more than any other, but his record against Pakistan puts the one against England in the shade. Though he had taken wickets on the tour of Pakistan a year earlier, this was the true beginning of his tyranny – Pakistan were 40-2 before his flight, dip, turn, bounce and showmanship did its thing.72 all out, Perth, December 2004
This Test wasn’t lost in Pakistan’s second-innings crumbling. By then they were “chasing” 564 for the win. It was actually yanked away on the first day when, having reduced Australia to 5 for 78, they allowed them to recover to 8 for 357.But that second-innings collapse was something, and if ever a case study was needed to examine and explain the failure of Pakistani batting in Australia, this would be a prime exhibit: Pacy surface, an accurate, back-of-a-length paceman who gets more bounce than usual and fairly hunts down edges operating on it, a succession of nervy wafts away from the body, outside off stump providing everyone in a cordon, from wicketkeeper to gully, catching practice.Glenn McGrath was the aforesaid pacemen, ending with a career-best 8-24 as Pakistan lost their last nine wickets for 38 runs in 21 overs. Bob Woolmer, their coach at the time, didn’t mince words, calling the batting disgraceful.139 all out , Sydney, January 2010
And to Sydney, the clearest-cut example of how, just by the simple act of being in Australia, the minds of Pakistani batsmen become scrambled. There was little in the surface by the time Pakistan began their chase of 176 on the fourth day of the Test. So little that Peter Siddle batted nearly three-and-a-half hours across the third and fourth days without undue alarm. Australia have had some fine pace attacks in their time, but it is safe to say Doug Bollinger, Siddle and a yet-to-be-revitalised Mitchell Johnson will struggle to get on that list. Ditto spinners and Nathan Hauritz. It looked good for 11 overs, by which time they were 50 and just one down. Then, as the target neared, they short-circuited, slogging, heaving and poking their way to their most infamous modern-day collapse (which is, in itself, a difficult list to get onto). In the process they gifted Hauritz the five easiest wickets he would have picked up in his career.

Kent's rowdy bunch find their stride in T20

One of the most traditional counties has been a revelation in this year’s Blast. Sam Billings, recently minted as an England international, wants to join the party

David Hopps14-Aug-2015Think of Kent cricket before the Blast and the images experienced over the course of 30 years and more still linger. Electric wheelchairs powering up the tarmac behind the old stands at Canterbury; bar room chit chat about Colin Cowdrey and Alan Knott, unreliable memories even then but none the worse for that; affable front-foot drives in endless sunshine; EW Swanton, that most trenchant of establishment cricket writers, revered in the Conservative south, occasionally reviled in the north, holding forth, with pocket watch to the ready, in the Band of Brothers marquee where there were really were scones and jam for tea; rickety old wooden stands resonant of civilised times, but in need of a lick of paint; picnic hampers and politeness; hold ups in play until rugs properly covered car windscreens – there were rules about how this should be done as I remember; the promise of a jolly young lad called Key; raffles for the Air Ambulance and the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust; a tree on the outfield for heaven’s sake; generals, brigadiers, widows, and an assortment of ties denoting clubs, schools, sporting bodies and occasionally, just occasionally, merely a gentleman’s outfitters of a certain style. To establish Twenty20 cricket here, you needed to move carefully. Plan your campaign. Gaze askance upon anything radical. Pop music, floodlights, slogs across the line: all had to be regarded with deep suspicion. Introduce them without anybody noticing.Kent finally established Twenty20, just as 40 years ago they embraced the one-day game as skilfully as any side in the land. No county has played its T20 cricket this season with more fun, more adventure, more sense of camaraderie. A young and talented side has won new admirers, filled the ground with youthful voices, forged new memories. An all-English side, too, making names for themselves, making light of the absence of an overseas player. A new generation of Kent followers will now have memories, too.”I think every article we read mentions that overseas thing,” says Sam Billings, an all-round sportsman of some repute and awarded a one-debut by England this summer. “But I do think it has given us some responsibility as a pretty young side. We haven’t been able to rely on an overseas player smashing it all over the place.”Kent stand on the brink of their first Twenty20 Finals Day for six years when Lancashire, runners-up last season, visit Canterbury on Saturday which did not seem on the cards when the club announced over the winter that they could not fund an overseas player because Canterbury City Council had blocked plans for 60 retirement flats on their St Lawrence ground. Such has been the youthful influx this season, perhaps they should resubmit them as student accommodation. Now they host a fixture which begins reminders of the 1970s when Lancashire and Kent ruled the roost in limited-overs cricket. If Kent can somehow strengthen their seam bowling resources the opportunity beckons again.”The PR and marketing team have done a fantastic job,” Billings says. “The amount of kids we have seen at matches are more than we have ever seen before. T20 fed into the accessible part of society as far as cricket was concerned. People don’t have time to spend all day at the cricket. They want everything now and quick.”Billings, by repute genial, self-assured and fiercely competitive, exudes generosity when he discusses Kent’s season. Much of that generosity is lavished on Sam Northeast, Kent’s T20 captain, who has responded confidently to the role now that Rob Key has taken a step back to the less vigorous world of the Championship, retirement not too far away. That Northeast will soon become Key’s successor in all formats looks inevitable. He will be to the taste of Kent’s old guard, too. As a 13-year-old, he once made 18 hundreds in a term at his prep school – Wellesley House, Broadstairs, where he went on an all-fees-paid sports scholarship, following the likes of Chris and Graham Cowdrey. Kent’s coaches visited him so as not to affect his schooling. Perhaps they even carried his homework.”Sam has taken to the captaincy like a duck to water,” Billings says. “He’s been around a long time and he has always been built up to be the new up-and-coming superkid: he smashed all schoolboy records, made his debut at 17. He was in a sort of no-win situation, expected to set the world alight.”Now with Rob taking a back seat has had to take the responsibility on. He is a pretty stubborn character – not shy to make a decision. We take the mickey out of him because with Rob around for so long he has every mannerism Rob has. Every single field change is out of the Rob Key handbook and he has the same expressions if someone smashes someone for four.”

“Gayle just put it in the river. We had dropped him in the 40s and feared the worst. I said ‘Chris, you live the dream don’t you’. He turned round and drawled, ‘Believe me I do'”

Experience now comes in the form of Darren Stevens, an old hand finding himself in a dressing room of confident kids. Billings intimated that the experience might have cost him a bit in new clothes. “He dresses like a 21-year-old: Jack Wills, that kind of stuff. He’s still young at heart. He has been one of the most valuable players in T20 for years. He probably started T20. Having his experience around the youngsters helps us.”Beneath the light-heartedness is the memory of a 51-run defeat against Lancashire in the Royal London Cup last Saturday, psychologically unhelpful perhaps, but more damaging had Alex Blake, another star of their T20 campaign, not thrashed 89 from 56 balls to reduce the margin to near-respectability. With a gap between the T20 group matches and the quarter-finals, that 50-over tie carries more resonance and could easily prey on nerves.Billings puts the manner of the defeat down to fatigue. “We are a small squad and we have been tired. You could see that in the Championship against Northants as well. We’ve had a nice break and it’s been much needed. We are pleased to be the last game in the round. Mentally and physically it’s been brilliant for us.”It was a big game, as far as the 50-over group is concerned, and it put Lancashire back in it. But Blake’s knock sent them back up to Lancashire with a note: a reminder that we have some seriously dangerous players.”Alex has been given more opportunity because of no overseas player. It’s fantastic to see. We have always known how good he can be. There aren’t many better death bowlers than James Faulkner and he hit him everywhere – including an extra-cover six that would have been six on any ground in the world.”Blake, used as a one-day specialist this season, also figures in one of Billings favourite memories of the T20 summer – the first indication that Kent would pose a serious threat. They were 70 for 5 at midway, in pursuit of 173, at the Ageas Bowl before Blake and Northeast fashioned a victory with four balls to spare. “We were down to 1% on the WASP result predictor,” Billings says. “That was a recovery that filled us with belief.”Then there was a remarkable 48 hours for Northeast, first at Beckenham when his 96 from 47 balls saw off Surrey and then the match of the season at Taunton when he followed up with 114 from 51 balls – Kent’s highest T20 score – but barely warranted a mention as Chris Gayle responded with 151, an innings Northeast happily praised as “ridiculous”.Kent got the win, though, by three runs, thanks to a stalwart final over from Mitch Claydon and, along the way, Billings enjoyed a verbal joust with Gayle, not remotely surprised to come off second best.”Gayle just showed why he is one of the most expensive players in the world,” he said. “He just pongoed into one and put it in the river. We had dropped him in the 40s and feared the worst. I said ‘Chris, you live the dream don’t you’. And he turned round and drawled, ‘Believe me I do’. I thought fair play.”Then after a dot ball he turned round and told me two of the next four balls would go for six and they did. You don’t chirp someone like that. The last over was sensational. The second-to-last ball from Mitch went through Gayle’s legs. That was memorable.”Billings has made his England debut this season, called up for the one-day series against New Zealand. There were glimpses of the exuberance and innovation of which Lancashire will be wary. In a season where Northeast and Blake have played the most sensational knocks, he must yearn to add his own contribution.”It’s a good carrot,” he admitted. “It’s a fact that people look at you and they think this bloke has played for England and needs to show why. I enjoy the responsibility and it would be great to show what I’m capable of.”

Ducking fielders, and tardy toecaps

ESPNcricinfo presents the plays of the day from the Group 2 match between Australia and West Indies

Abhishek Purohit and Mohammad Isam28-Mar-2014Batsman makes room, successfullyFacing up to the West Indies spinners was expected to be a challenge for the Australians. They were to lose six wickets to them, but you would have never thought that was coming after the opening over of spin bowled by Samuel Badree. Aaron Finch kept making room outside leg stump and smashed Badree for three successive boundaries. The first blow sent a flighted delivery over long-off. Badree bowled the next two flatter and quicker, but Finch backed away again to hit them for fours either side of point.Batsman makes room, unsuccessfullyDavid Warner tried the same tactic against Badree as well. He rocked back and made room to cut a flat, quick ball for four. He tried to repeat the treatment to the next legal delivery, but this came on even quicker, and also stayed a shade low. Warner swung, missed and was bowled.Point takes coverIn the 15th over, Andre Russell bowled a beamer at James Faulkner, perhaps in anger for the batsman’s verbal attack two days ago. But so engrossed was Darren Sammy at point, he ducked like Faulkner too. The telecast didn’t pick up on the West Indies captain’s sudden movement but who would even look towards point when the beamer has missed the batsman and wicketkeeper? The regulation second attemptWicketkeepers hardly get two attempts at a stumping chance, but Shane Watson gave Denesh Ramdin exactly that in the sixth over. After he had been beaten by Sunil Narine three times in the over already, Watson, who had strayed slightly out of the crease, missed another. Ramdin threw his hands at the stumps and completely missed the bail, but Watson still hadn’t dragged his toe behind the crease, allowing him to remove the bails on the second attempt. The spectacular second attemptDwayne Bravo was moved around the Mirpur ground to ensure West Indies had one of their best fielders wherever the batsmen were looking to slog. Glenn Maxwell holed out to him at deep midwicket and when James Faulkner hit one towards long-off , Bravo rushed in and got under the ball slightly awkwardly. The ball hit his palms and popped up, but Bravo was quick enough to dive full-length to his left and complete the catch.

Tahir still waiting to launch career

Imran Tahir is yet to make an indelible mark on Test cricket. He, and South Africa, will hope the Brisbane Test proves to be the start of better things for him

Firdose Moonda in Brisbane07-Nov-2012Imran Tahir must feel like his cricket career is on permanent repeat. Before every series, South Africa’s pace attack gets so talked up it is as though Tahir is in the side for either his fielding or his dressing room smoothie-making capabilities. Then, as a consolation prize, Tahir gets a mention in a backhanded compliment kind of way. Maybe if the quicks don’t end the match in three days and the sun shines and pitch wears sufficiently, he could have an impact. So far, none of that has had the chance to happen.Tahir and Vernon Philander became Test players on the same day. They both donned South African whites for the first time last November at Newlands, known as the country’s best track for spinners. The unusual timing of the Test meant the match did end in three days and got Tahir 10 overs, none in the second innings.Against Sri Lanka who followed soon after Australia departed South African shores, seamer-friendly pitches were prepared to honour the notion that subcontinent batsmen could be scared by bounce. Tahir was talked down before the tour to England, against a team who thought they had a better spinner in Graeme Swann, one who would swing the debate about who had the best attack in the world their way. In the end, the apparent disharmony of England’s line-up meant the question of the best attack faded into the background and more pertinent ones had to be asked about No. 4 batsmen and dressing-room culture. Most arguments that start with Tahir end with something else. While Philander now has 61 Tests wickets and has become so popular that in his first full year as a national cricketer he won South African Sportsmen of the Year two days ago, Tahir has quietly snaffled 26 scalps and is still waiting for his career to take off. Maybe, just maybe, it will happen in Brisbane. The Gabba pitch has been described as juicy and looks it but, as curator Kevin Mitchell Jr pointed out, it will probably only stay that way on day one. Then, like any good cricket track it will flatten first and break up later. At that point, Tahir will come into play and the groundsman all but confirmed it: “We’ll get a bit of deterioration as the game goes on with some cracking, and then those footmarks will dust up for the spinners.”While similar things have been said of other surfaces Tahir has played on, he has more reason to believe it is true about this one. Sixty-eight reasons actually. That is the number of wickets Shane Warne took at the Gabba, his most successful ground. It includes his best of 8 for 71 against England in the summer of 1994-95.

Tahir has been a discipline of Warne’s in the past. When he played at Hampshire, he remembered Warne travelling from London especially to see him and offer advice. One of the lessons Warne shared was never to be afraid to put fielders on the boundary and get hit a bit.

That, with Mitchell’s thoughts, would discourage the teams from taking the all-pace route. South Africa hinted they would not choose that path. “If you ask any coach or captain they will say they always like a spinner in their team,” Gary Kirsten, South Africa coach, said. “A spinner always plays a role, especially in my experience.”Australia’s coach, Mickey Arthur, was even more convinced that the spinner would be useful at the Gabba. “This ground offers bounce, and bounce is a bowler’s best friend,” he said. “You’ve still got to land it in the right area, and you’ve got to build enough pressure. But bounce gives you an opportunity.”In the end, it may be Warne’s mantra that means the most to Tahir. “If its seams, its spins,” he would say. The Gabba is certain to seam – at least for a bit early on – and by Warne’s logic, it is also sure to turn then. Tahir has been a discipline of Warne’s in the past. When he played at Hampshire, he remembered Warne travelling from London especially to see him and offer advice. One of the lessons Warne shared was never to be afraid to put fielders on the boundary and get hit a bit.Australia’s young quick, James Pattinson said yesterday the Gabba is a ground where bowlers are encouraged to “bowl without fear”. Tahir has spent his entire Test career so far gripped by expectation that has led him to either use too much variation or to bowl within himself. If he is finally allowed to let go of that anxiety, his Test career could take off here, a little like Warne’s did.

North savours satisfying century

The middle-order batsman has had starting trouble, but once he gets set he usually makes a big score

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Oct-2010Forrest Gump’s momma thought life was like a box of chocolates. “You never know what you’re gonna get”. Australian cricket fans must get the same feeling these days when Marcus North walks to the crease and marks his guard. His superb 128 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium was North’s fifth century in just 19 Tests, but he’s also been out an astonishing 16 times for scores of 10 or less [31 innings]. English fans who have been willing him into the Ashes side should be careful what they wish for. When he gets a start, North can really hurt you.His press conference after the day’s play was as calm and composed as most of his innings had been. “Been asked that question maybe 20 times,” he said with a smile when the starting trouble was mentioned. “Do you blokes have any ideas? It’s a difficult one for me. It’s been like that my whole career and it’s highlighted at the Test level because every innings is there for everyone to see and comment about. I’m trying my best to work with it.”That work involved sessions with Tim Nielsen, the coach, where they focussed on getting a positive stride down the wicket. There was also attention paid to his on-drive. “The work I did with Vinny [Nielsen] … having a really positive foot movement. It sounds simple, but it’s not that easy. That’s something I’ll take away from this innings. When I’ve struggled to get started, my feet [movements] perhaps haven’t been as sharp. Most batsmen are like that, but I’ve been more vulnerable than most.”North was nearly 30 when he made his debut, and he reckons that the late start has made him cherish every opportunity to wear the baggy green. “I made my debut so late that I thought I probably wasn’t going to play for Australia,” he said. “I try to enjoy every Test match and make the most of it. It can be difficult at times, the pressures of the game and the standards you set yourself. This is my 19th Test and the main thing for me is to try and contribute to a win.”After a week of raging debate over whether he’d be part of the Ashes equation, North was just content to savour what he called a “satisfying hundred”. “You have to ask the national selectors that,” he quipped when asked about the Ashes. “I knew that I was under pressure going into this game. I’ve had a couple of disappointing Test matches, so I thought it was a great opportunity to go in on a pretty good batting surface and get a score. I got a start yesterday and it was nice to go on and make the most of it today.”Having come in with the scoreboard showing 198 for 4, North scored nearly half the runs added before his heave at Harbhajan Singh found the fielder in the deep. “After walking in yesterday against Zaheer Khan, my feet were moving as well as they have been for a while,” he said. When play was called off, he was on 43, having just survived a swinging yorker from Zaheer. “It was a bit of luck,” he said. “It was dark there. My whole innings, I felt like I was hitting the ball pretty well straight. It was something me and Tim had worked on.”In his case, the familiarity with the venue bred confidence, not contempt. “I was walking off after the last training session and JL [Justin Langer] said: ‘Make sure you visualise scoring some runs here’. I’ve played here three or four times, made hundreds for WA [Western Australia] on pre-season tours and also played for Australia A here. Scored a few runs here, but a Test match is a completely different scenario.”

North’s record of five centuries in 19 Tests compares favourably to some of the game’s greats. It took Rahul Dravid 29 Tests to score five hundreds, though his average was much higher, and it took Steve Waugh as many as 56 games

North’s record of five centuries compares favourably to some of the game’s greats. It took Rahul Dravid 29 Tests to score five hundreds, though his average was much higher, and it took Steve Waugh as many as 56 games. It wasn’t until after he’d played 60 games that Waugh consistently averaged over 40. Maybe the selectors do know something that the average punter doesn’t.When his place in the side was being queried, his team-mates had rallied round North and Ricky Ponting, his captain, had spoken at length about the experience and composure that he brought to the side. North insisted that the rough patch had not shaken his self-belief. “You might think that’s quite strange,” he said. “Other than talking with Vinny, I didn’t change anything mentally. The week before last, I got a hundred in the warm-up game. I felt I was in pretty good touch. I’ve felt pretty comfortable this tour and maybe that’s why, under a lot of pressure, I’ve come through.”Australia have never lost in Bangalore and now have the advantage of runs on the board, but North admitted that it would take some special bowling to prise the Indians out twice. “It’s a pretty good batting surface and should hold together,” he said. “It was pretty tacky and moist on day one, and is probably going to take a few days to dry out. There is a bit of deterioration, and it may be harder to bat on days four and five. We’re going to have to come out tomorrow and be very disciplined to build pressure and get into the middle order.”The bowler to most catch the eye in the session that India batted was Ben Hilfenhaus, who gave little away and also dismissed Virender Sehwag with the short-ball bait that he has fallen for in three successive innings. “Since Hilfy’s made his debut, he’s been very impressive in all conditions,” said North. “He’s a natural swing bowler and suited to the English and Australian swinging ball.”Coming over here, he’s proved that there’s more to his game than just swinging the ball. He’s banged it in hard, bowled cross-seam and tidily. He’s adapted his game to Indian conditions pretty quickly and had some success.”The biggest barrier in Australia’s path, with VVS Laxman unavailable for this game, could be Sachin Tendulkar, and North couldn’t hide his admiration. “He’s a pretty amazing player,” he said. “To be on the same ground when he brought up his 14,000th Test run is pretty special. It’s a credit to his career. We talk about the pressures of Test cricket. This guy’s got the pressure of a nation on him. He’s someone we’re going to try and remove pretty quickly tomorrow. To see him score 14,000 in the same game in which I went past 1000 puts things into perspective.”Perspective is certainly not something that North lacks. A late entrant to the Test game, he may play a few more yet.

An update on your online orders: We know you are eager to get your books, and we’ve been hustling to get them to you. Though this assembly of carts may look daunting, we’ve made a variety of adjustments to accommodate the surge in volume. The good news is that we’re turning a corner and feel optimistic that we can soon get orders out the door in a more timely fashion. In the meantime, we can’t thank you enough for your patience and loyalty as we navigate this extraordinary situation. Your kindness and enthusiasm keeps us energized and focused on our shared love of books.

Ben Brown gatecrashes Alec Stewart's feast: keepers for starters, pastel de nata for dessert

Hamsphire fight back after Surrey dismantle top order

Surrey 37 for 0 trail Hampshire 254 all out (Brown 95, Lawes 4-58) by 217 runsIf you come to this part of south London, you’re guaranteed at least two things – Portuguese restaurants and wicketkeepers. There is a high concentration of both in this corner of Lambeth. As many as 10 of the former within a one-mile radius of the Kia Oval and four of the latter within the ground as part of Surrey’s XI for the visit of Hampshire. Probably more coincidence than anything else, but who could blame you for indulging the fan fiction that Alec Stewart’s penchant for a pastel de nata bred an Iberian culinary turf war?Nevertheless, if you want the best of either, this is a good part of the country to seek it. Usually, anyway. On Thursday, patrons of the Kia Oval for the defending champions’ 2023 homecoming were informed that one of the best wicketkeepers around was not part of the four. Ben Foakes, England’s incumbent behind the stumps – a position surely reinforced by 76 and 103 not out against Lancashire last week – was out with back issue. Not enough to raise concern, but enough to urge caution and bring a sense of disappointment no amount of custard tarts could overcome.Shorn of theirs and England’s number one, locals made do with Jamie Smith, a long-term international prospect, as deputy. Ollie Pope, who did it twice on the Test tour of Pakistan, was also a potential option, though he seemed happy enough standing at second slip. Skipper Rory Burns was once considered a capable understudy many moons ago. Trawl through the annals, and you’ll even find under-17 scorecards of allrounder Jordan Clark with a dagger by his name. By stumps, however, the leading wicketkeeper turn came from the opposition.Ben Brown stood above his peers with a diligent 95, holding Hampshire together on day one of this first battle of the summer between two title rivals. That the visitors made it to 254 in their first innings was a minor miracle, and Surrey’s score of 37 for no loss at stumps put the under-performance of Hampshire’s top-order into perspective.Brown arrived at the crease on 39 for 4, after James Vince had won the toss and chosen to bat first under bright blue skies. Kemar Roach worked over Felix Organ for his 50th first-class wicket for Surrey, then fortuitously bowled Nick Gubbins – the left-hander defending a ball that bounced and spun back onto his leg stump – for 51. At the other end, Vince had poked at Sean Abbott’s first delivery before Tom Lawes knocked out Liam Dawson’s off stump.Alec Stewart – a case of mild indigestion perhaps?•Getty Images

The 14th over hardly called for a “traditional” wicketkeeper in the modern sense. There was little to riff off beforehand and counter-attacking against a bowling group as rampant as they were relentless would have only gone one way. Just as well then that Brown strolled out.He is more batter-keeper than keeper-batter, and thus something of an anomaly among his full-time contemporaries. One who gets bowlers to come to him rather than the other way around, rarely straying from a self-imposed box, whether punching drives off the front foot or swivelling off the back foot to anything short. There are not many misjudgements, which makes the life he got on 3 all the more noteworthy.A hook off Sean Abbott burst through the hands of Lawes out on the square leg fence. Lawes would profit from Brown’s next error 146 deliveries later when the right-hander drifted across his stumps and was trapped in front, missing out on a 24th career century. The 20-year-old seamer made further amends to remove Keith Barker, the only other batter to offer resistance, before yorking Kyle Abbott to finish with 4 for 58.Brown used the time between his errors wisely, ticking over the scoreboard without taking undue risk, even for the 11 boundaries he managed. Even with the losses of Fletcha Middleton – caught behind for 32 after Smith had dropped him on 0 – and Ian Holland, Brown did not panic and go into cavalier mode. In Barker, he found an accomplished ally for a ball shy of 35 overs before their stand ended on 95.Brown has a degree of misfortune in that the gloves seem to distract from his batting, which is worthy of merit on its own. The straightforward methodology and average of 40.45 suggest he could have done it as a full-time pursuit, something lost by being a first-choice gloveman. That average has been steadily improving since 2015 and ticked over the magic 40 mark at the end of the 2021 season, where it has remained ever since. All the while, his keeping remains tidy, and in turn his value to Hampshire rises in tandem with the frustration of Sussex supporters. It remains a mystery why he was managed so poorly back in that 2021 summer when he was stripped of the captaincy. A mutually-agreed release from Hove two years ahead of time came to pass at the end of the year, ending an association that began as an under-11.Aged 34, international honours for a former England under-19 are probably gone, even if Brown has publicly stated he will keep pushing for a Test cap even when he’s 40. That he has rarely been mentioned in the numerous conversations around England’s keeping position over the years is best reflected in the “Foakes or Bairstow” one happening at the moment. The reliability of Foakes’ conventional batting is taken as read rather than a tick in his box.Brown falls into the same category. But, like Foakes, taking that for granted would be a mistake. Without his efforts, Hampshire could have been staring at a similar innings defeat they suffered here last season. Now, thanks to Brown, they will return with something to work with on day two.

Manuel Neuer backed to make Germany return as Bayern Munich legend sees no other solution amid Marc-Andre ter Stegen injury absence

Bastian Schweinsteiger believes Manuel Neuer is the only solution for Germany's goalkeeper crisis ahead of the World Cup.

  • Schweinsteiger advocates for the return of Neuer
  • Says veteran’s experience will help Germany
  • Ter Stegen sidelined with a serious back injury

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Amid Germany's ongoing goalkeeper debate, former German international Schweinsteiger has publicly advocated for a shock return for Neuer. Schweinsteiger made the comments ahead of Germany's World Cup qualifying match against Slovakia. The public discussion has been reignited due to a back injury that has sidelined Germany's regular number one, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who has also lost his starting spot at Barcelona.

    WHAT SCHWEINSTEIGER SAID?

Speaking on Schweinsteiger was clear and direct about his solution to Germany's goalkeeping predicament, stating that there is only one logical choice in his opinion.

"When it comes to this topic, I always look around the world to see who has a German passport," he said. "And then I end up with Manuel Neuer. He recently demonstrated his exceptional performance at the Club World Cup. I would bring Manuel Neuer back, he has that certain aura. Once you've been a World Cup champion, you want to experience that feeling again. To have the chance to experience it a second and a third time."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The German Football Association (DFB) is facing a goalkeeper dilemma with the 2026 World Cup approaching. Ter Stegen's back surgery and a previous knee injury have severely limited his playing time, a situation made worse by him losing his first-team place at Barcelona. This has created an opportunity for others to stake a claim for the number one shirt.

While Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has stated that a fully fit and match-experienced Ter Stegen remains his first choice, the Barca keeper's long-term availability is now in doubt. This has led many, including Schweinsteiger, to look to Neuer, who officially retired from international football in the summer of 2024. Despite his age, Neuer has recently demonstrated his world-class form for Bayern Munich, most notably during the Club World Cup.

    WHAT NEXT FOR GERMANY?

With Ter Stegen out for the foreseeable future, Nagelsmann has entrusted Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann to fill the goalkeeping void. However, the discussion surrounding Neuer's potential comeback is unlikely to go away, especially if Germany struggles in their upcoming qualifying matches.

Schweinsteiger's 2014 World Cup teammate retired from the German national team after 124 international appearances following the European Championship on home soil in the summer of 2024. Schweinsteiger does not believe it would be a problem to convince the Bayern captain to make a comeback: "He's fit, he plays at a top level – why not?"
