Farke could drop 4/10 Leeds man in swoop for "exceptional" star

Leeds United do not yet know whether they will be competing in the Premier League or the Championship when the 2024/25 campaign begins in August.

The Whites are currently in the play-offs in the second tier and will need to come out on top against Norwich City in the semi-finals before winning at Wembley later this month to secure a place in the top-flight for next season.

Daniel Farke's side finished six points off the automatic promotion places and lost four of their last six matches in the league before the end of the regular campaign.

This means that the Yorkshire-based outfit head into this two-legged clash with David Wagner's Yellows off the back of a poor run of form in the division.

Despite the players and coaching staff currently needing to focus on matters on the training pitch ahead of their trip to Norfolk on Sunday, the Whites are reportedly already looking at players to potentially bolster their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Leeds United's interest in defensive midfielder

A recent report from Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad, as relayed by Sport Witness, claimed that Leeds are one of a number of teams interested in a swoop for defensive midfielder Mandela Keita.

The 21-year-old star is currently on loan at Royal Antwerp from OH Leuven, having initially joined the club on a temporary basis in January of last year.

The report stated that there is a mandatory purchase clause if certain conditions are met in his loan deal, but did not reveal whether or not those conditions have been met by this point.

However, it did add that Mandela is interested in making a move away from Belgium to make the switch to England this summer, amid interest from a number of teams.

Mandela Keita

The outlet named Leeds, Blackburn Rovers, and Norwich as three of the sides eyeing up the talented ace, as they are all said to be tracking Keita's situation in the Pro League.

Leeds and the Canaries, of course, face off against each other in the play-offs and the winner will earn a place at Wembley, which will then give them a chance to seal promotion to the Premier League.

Earning a spot in the top-flight could give that team an advantage in the race to land Keita as they would be able to offer Premier League football, and possibly higher wages given the uptick in revenue from getting promoted.

If the Whites can win the race for his signature, whether they are in the top division or the Championship, Farke could brutally ditch Ilia Greuv as a starter for the club, with the Antwerp star coming in to replace him in the lineup.

Ilia Gruev's form for Leeds this season

The Bulgaria international arrived at Elland Road on a permanent deal from Werder Bremen last summer and has had mixed success throughout the season.

He did not immediately force his way into the starting XI under the German head coach as Ethan Ampadu and Glen Kamara were the preferred pairing, with the ex-Bundesliga ace making nine appearances as a substitute during the first half of the campaign.

Ilia Gruev

However, when Ampadu was called upon to play at centre-back next to Joe Rodon, a space opened up in midfield at the start of 2024 and the midfield ace has been a regular fixture in the lineup when available.

Gruev ended the regular season with 20 league starts to his name and he showcased some good and bad qualities in the middle of the park.

As you can see in the table above, his play in possession has had positives and negatives, with a high completion rate and above-average progressive passing, but well below average when it comes to creating shooting opportunities for his teammates and carrying the ball forward.

LeedsLive's Beren Cross awarded Gruev a player rating of 4/10 for his most recent display against Southampton in the league, citing that he looked rusty and off the pace, as the midfielder lost three of his four duels on the day.

Farke could now land an upgrade on the Bulgarian gem and ruthlessly ditch him from the starting XI next season by securing a deal to sign Keita ahead of Blackburn and Norwich.

Why Mandela Keita could replace Ilia Gruev

The 5 foot 11 star could be a fantastic signing to take the former Werder Bremen maestro's place in the lineup if he can translate his form from the Pro League over to English football next season.

Firstly, Keita ranks within the top 38% of Pro League midfielders for assists per 90 (0.12), the top 31% for progressive passes per 90 (5.58), and the top 42% for progressive carries per 90 (1.34), to go along with a pass success rate of 89.4%.

This suggests that the 21-year-old dynamo offers more than Gruev in possession as he completes his passes at a similar rate whilst progressing the ball more, through passes and carries, and assisting his teammates more frequently.

The Belgium international has the quality to progress play on a regular basis from a defensive midfield position, which can help to break down low blocks as he plays the ball between the lines to find his team's attackers in dangerous positions.

As you can see in the table below, Keita, who was lauded as an "exceptional" talent by U23 scout Antonio Mango, also has the potential to be an upgrade on the Leeds dud with his work out of possession.

The Pro League star has won a higher percentage of his defensive duels whilst also making significantly more tackles, interceptions, and recoveries per game to cut out opposition attacks.

Overall, Keita appears to offer more to his side on and off the ball than Gruev does to the Whites, which is why Farke could ruthlessly drop the 4/10 dud to the bench next season by swooping for the Norwich and Blackburn target.

'As if he's prime CR7!' – Chelsea fans turn on 'completely entitled' Raheem Sterling for 'kicking off' after being left out of Premier League opener vs Man City

Chelsea fans have hit out at Raheem Sterling's attitude after the winger was dropped from the squad for the clash against Manchester City.

Sterling dropped for Man City gameWinger's camp call for clarity on his futureFans critical of Sterling's attitudeWHAT HAPPENED?

New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca raised eyebrows by leaving Sterling out of his squad to face Manchester City on Sunday. Sterling's camp responded by calling for clarity on the situation and highlighted how the winger had been expected to play against Pep Guardiola's side. Fans have been left unimpressed by the latest development and have called Sterling's attitude into question.

AdvertisementWHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Chelsea fan @jamesdsmitth posted on X:"All that Sterling statement does is show him to be completely entitled, as if he thinks he has a divine right to be in the squad. It’s the first game of the season and he’s kicking off. That’s not someone who wants to give their best for Chelsea. Get him gone."

Another supporter, @CFCDUBois, compared Sterling to Cristiano Ronaldo: "Sterling put out a statement after being left out of the squad as if he’s prime CR7."

Maresca's decision to drop Sterling was hailed by @rhystakes who posted: "Sterling statement reinforces why dropping him is the right decision. What a disgrace thinks he’s bigger than the club."

Another fan, @falsewinger, also criticised Sterling and the timing of his statement: "Sterling's camp has released a statement just MINUTES after he was dropped from the matchday squad. This is on par with that Lukaku interview. Player putting themselves ahead of the club and it shouldn't be accepted. You have all the time in the world but you choose to do this an hour before kickoff and that too on the first matchday of the season?!"

And @Re7ceRevivaI feels axing Sterling is just one of several good calls made by Maresca: "[Conor] Gallagher sold, [Trevor] Chalobah banned, [Ben] Chilwell and Sterling sent home. Maresca actually got rid of all the sh*t players."

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Maresca has said the decision to drop Sterling was purely a "technical" one but there's no doubt it's a big call by the new boss. Sterling's reaction to the decision is also telling and seems to have thrown his future at Stamford Bridge into doubt. Turin giants Juventus have previously been linked with a move for Sterling, but it remains to be seen if they will reignite their interest after the latest developments.

Man Utd send club official to Portugal as Ratcliffe readies huge offer

Manchester United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly have a huge bid ready to sign one star this summer.

Man Utd’s transfer plans under Ratcliffe

The Red Devils and Ratcliffe may well be planning for the upcoming summer transfer window, which will be their first to make their mark at Old Trafford.

Whether or not Erik ten Hag is still in charge remains to be seen, but a number of new faces may well be required, with United struggling for large parts of the current campaign.

Man Utd want 4-2-3-1 manager who plays “sublime football” to oust Ten Hag

The Red Devils have concrete interest in him.

ByHenry Jackson Apr 3, 2024

Ratcliffe has already addressed his likely transfer policy, hinting that the club may not throw money around. When asked about the possibility of signing either Jude Bellingham or Kylian Mbappe, he said:

“He’s a great footballer (Bellingham) but it’s not where our focus is. The solution isn’t spending a lot of money on a couple of great players. They’ve done that, if you look at the last 10 years. The first thing we need to do is get the right people in the right boxes, managing and organising the club. We must make sure we get recruitment right, such a vital part of running a football club is getting recruitment right, finding new players.”

On the idea of signing Mbappe, who is on course to join Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain over the summer, Ratcliffe then added:

“I’d rather find the next Mbappe, rather than spend a fortune to buy success. It’s not that clever to buy Mbappe, anybody could figure that one out.”

However, one player who has been heavily linked with a big-money move to Old Trafford is Benfica midfielder Joao Neves. Recent reports suggested that Ratcliffe was set to approve a record-breaking offer of more than £100m to sign the 19-year-old, and there has now been a new development.

Man Utd bid ready for Joao Neves

According to reports from Portugal relayed by Sport Witness, Man Utd have more than €100m ready to convince the Eagles to sell Neves, who is seen as a priority target in Manchester.

In fact, it could be a club record move over €105m (£90m), with the story adding that there was due to be a Red Devils official in attendance on Tuesday night for Benfica’s clash with Sporting CP.

Benfica midfielder Joao Neves

Something which could also sweeten a deal for Neves is a permanent exit for United defender Alvaro Carreras, who is on loan at Benfica. There is thought to be a transfer on the cards between United and the Eagles in the summer for Carreras.

United would have liked what they saw from Neves on Tuesday evening, with the youngster playing the full 90 minutes and recording a 7.5/10 SofaScore match rating.

'It hurts' – Kagiso Rabada admits to letting his team down

Kagiso Rabada has admitted that he had let the team down – again – after copping a one-match ban which will force him to miss the final Test against England in Johannesburg with his team trailing 2-1. Two years ago, Rabada had escaped similar punishment, conceding afterwards that he needed to re-evaluate his on-field conduct.Rabada was charged with a Level 1 offence for reacting aggressively after bowling Joe Root in Port Elizabeth. It earned him one demerit point, taking his total number of active points to four over a two-year period, resulting in the ban. While expressing his surprise at the punishment, he refused to comment on whether it was disproportionate keeping in mind the offence. “It’s something that I didn’t expect, whether it was the right thing to ban me or the wrong thing, the reality is that I am banned,” Rabada said in a press conference. “Obviously, it hurts, but I guess it gives me a chance to work on my game and gives me a chance to have a bit of a rest.ALSO READ: ‘I hope ICC don’t take emotion out of the game’ – Mark Boucher”I mean, it can’t keep happening, because I am letting the team down and I am letting myself down. It just can’t keep happening, that is why it hurts so much.”South Africa find themselves under immense pressure having slumped to heavy defeats in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, after starting the series on a winning note in Centurion. They have now lost seven of their last eight Tests, four of them at home. Rabada conceded that the mood in the camp was downbeat, and stressed on the importance of getting into a good mental space before the decider.”Not great (the mood), you know, we know haven’t played well, it really does hurt us,” he said. “Everyone in our change room, I am 100% sure, are strong characters, and we just need to bounce back. I think, mentally, we need to get into a clear space, so that when we get to Wanderers, we can really play without any second thoughts, and have a good idea about how we want to go about our situation.”Meanwhile, South Africa are back to full strength – minus Rabada – for the final Test, with Temba Bavuma, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keegan Petersen and Beuran Hendricks rejoining the squad after domestic duty. Bavuma, in particular, comes with form behind him, having struck 180 in his last first-class innings, which could augur well for a struggling batting line-up, should he make the XI.”We were all together as a squad before the Centurion Test, there was a really good vibe,” Rabada said. “Those guys are coming back now, there’s going to be good vibes again. We are familiar with everyone that was here in the squad, and now when they come back it’s going to be like we are reunited. Yeah, it’ll be good to finish off with the whole squad being around and finishing off with a win.”

GOAL's World-Class Club 2024: USWNT star Alex Morgan loses elite status as Lionesses hero Mary Earps earns inclusion among the best women's footballers

Every summer, GOAL will publish its exclusive list of the 25 players who have proven themselves truly elite by consistently producing top performances

World-class… It's an invisible but important tag, one that separates the good from the great. But it's such a subjective term. Every football fan has their own definition, their own set of criterion, leading to endless but thoroughly enjoyable debates in stadiums, dressing rooms, cafes, bars, pubs and clubs all across the world.

So, last summer, GOAL decided to get in on the fun by compiling a very exclusive list of the 25 women's players that we felt represented the game's elite, the best of the best, the players that had been producing stellar performances over a sustained period of time.

In order to avoid focusing solely on attackers – which, let's face it, nearly always happens when it comes to individual awards and accolades – we stipulated that there must be at least three players from each position group (goalkeeper, defence, midfield and attack), but a maximum of nine from each.

Now, the time has arrived to decide to gets to stay in the World-Class Club – and who must be politely asked to leave. So, who's made this year's 25 strong-list? Find out below, and be sure to express your approval – or outrage – in the comments…

    GK: Mary Earps 🆕

Earps was the stand-out goalkeeper as England won the 2022 Women’s Euro and reached the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, with fantastic performances at events of that level going a long way to mark her out as a world-class player. Underpinned by real consistency at club level for Manchester United before joining Paris Saint-Germain this summer, Earps so often makes saves that both shock and amaze in equal parts.

Widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the very best, for at least the last five years, Endler shows no signs of slowing down. After representing perennial bridesmaids PSG for three years, a switch to French rivals Lyon in 2021 has given her a taste of the very biggest matches and she’s regularly delivered in them, especially in the Champions League.

    GK: Kailen Sheridan

Over the last three years, there’s been no goalkeeper in the NWSL as consistently brilliant as Sheridan. First with Gotham and now the San Diego Wave, the 28-year-old has not only excelled in every area of her game, but probably improved, too, to reach new levels. As such, she’s deservedly become Canada’s No.1, which is no mean feat given the competition there.

    DEF: Selma Bacha

Remarkably still just 23 years old, Bacha continues to be one of the most consistent performers – and a game-changing one at that – for one of the best teams in the sport. Primarily a left-back for Lyon while playing her part in four Champions League triumphs, that she can also excel further forward only adds to her world-class quality. Paine, Siddle played Oval Test with injuries

Australia captain says his thumb is “broken but not displaced”, praises Siddle for pushing through and bowling despite hip injury

Tim Paine has revealed he suffered a broken thumb towards the end of the final Test against England, and praised Peter Siddle for battling through an injury he sustained early in the match. The exact details of Paine’s injury are yet to be confirmed, but he expects to be back training soon and it is understood Cricket Australia’s medical staff are not concerned by the injury.”There’s a bit of recovery to be done,” Paine said in his column for the . “My thumb was broken towards the end of that Test but it is not displaced, so I should be right to get back into training early.”Paine has a history of broken fingers, requiring seven operations on his right index finger after a nasty break in 2010, which almost ended his career. He was already due to be rested for the start of Tasmania’s Marsh One-Day Cup campaign, which begins on September 23; the Sheffield Shield begins on October 10.Whatever domestic cricket he plays this season will only be for Tasmania as he also revealed he will not be taking part in the BBL, in order to conserve his energies for Test cricket. He could have been available for the second half of the tournament – the New Zealand series finishes in early January – but wants to manage his workload. Given Australia have a large gap in their Test schedule after January, that adds further weight to Paine’s comments about wanting to continue in the role for some time to come.”I’m keen to see just how far we can take this team and I’ve decided to give up the BBL so I can concentrate on red-ball cricket and being in the best place to lead them,” he said. “Being captain is draining and I think I should take every chance to recharge my batteries. I’ll go back to the BBL when I’m finished, but for now my focus is on my main job.”Paine also praised the effort put in by Siddle during the Oval Test, after the bowler suffered a hip injury on the opening day. Siddle was preferred ahead of Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson for the final pace-bowling spot and struggled to provide his usual control throughout the match, although produced his best spell towards the end of England’s second innings when he removed Joe Denly and Jos Buttler.”Peter Siddle tore a hip flexor bowling on the first morning,” Paine said. “He has copped a bit of criticism for not bowling as well as he we know he can, but the team knows just how heroic he was. A lot of other people wouldn’t have bowled again in the match, but he pushed on because he didn’t want to leave Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins to do extra work. He’s a warrior, Sidds, and we love him deeply for that.”Australia’s next Test match starts on November 21 against Pakistan at the Gabba. That series will be preceded by three T20Is against Sri Lanka and three against Pakistan, from late October, to begin the international season.

Out-of-shape striker Wolves wanted now upsetting people at new club

Wolves didn't get the striker they wanted in the January transfer window despite trying multiple times. They made a deadline-day push to land Armando Broja from Chelsea, but he chose to accept a rival offer from Fulham instead.

Armando Broja celebrating a goal for Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Wolves agreed a deal to sign Yuri Alberto from Corinthians, but they would then walk away from the transfer when the player's representatives demanded an extra £790,000 in fees.

Earlier in the window, it was reported that Gary O'Neil's side had approached PSG with an offer to sign Hugo Ekitike on loan until the end of the season with an option to buy. In the end, however, he wound up joining Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt instead, and they will be able to sign him for around £26m this summer should they wish.

Wolves target Ekitike out of shape

As it turns out, Ekitike may have encountered some difficulties in his Wolves medical because, according to reports, he's severely lacking fitness. "Muscular problems" emerged in his first training session, and the feedback on the player around his new home has been negative.

The 21-year-old made a 13-minute debut as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat to Koln last weekend, but he's now been withdrawn for the upcoming game against Bochum and it's unclear when he'll be cleared to play a full part. He'd only played eight minutes all season for PSG, which may partly explain his poor condition.

Lucky escape won't wipe away O'Neil frustration

It seems Wolves may have inadvertently dodged a bullet by failing to land Ekitike, who might not have been able to play a significant volume of minutes, or indeed show his best form, between now and May.

O'Neil buzzing: Wolves confirm double boost before Brentford

Wolves have revealed their team news for the upcoming clash, and it’s good news.

However, that will only provide a limited amount of comfort for O'Neil, who has publicly hinted at his disappointment after Wolves came up short: "We didn't manage to get a nine done. There were a few that I really liked and we couldn't afford any. We could afford some, but not ones that I thought would help us. The group is the group and we get to work on trying to maximise it."
