McDermott 127 breaks records and Renegades

Hobart Hurricanes opener Ben McDermott become the first player in BBL history to crack successive centuries, firing his side to a comprehensive 85-run win against Melbourne Renegades.McDermott clattered nine sixes and as many fours in a stunning knock of 127 from 65 balls at the Docklands Stadium on Wednesday night. It was the third-highest individual score in the BBL, behind Melbourne Stars’ Marcus Stoinis (147*) and Hurricanes team-mate Matthew Wade (130 not out).It came to an anti-climactic end when he was run-out by Sam Harper on the final ball of Hurricanes’ innings. At the halfway point of their innings, Hurricanes were ticking along slowly at 3 for 66, with McDermott unbeaten on 39 off 31 balls. But the got going during the power surge as he and Peter Handscomb took 44 runs off Zahir Khan in the 13th over and Kane Richardson, who finished with 0 for 63 from four overs on return from illness.Tim David came to the party late with four huge sixes in a nine-ball cameo as Hurricanes belted the most runs ever recorded in the back half of a BBL innings for a total of 5 for 206.In response, Renegades opener Harper whacked the first ball of their chase for six and made a gritty 57 off 35. But the hosts were never seriously in the hunt, bowled out for 121 in 15.5 overs.Tom Rogers and Sandeep Lamichhane took six wickets between them for Hurricanes.McDermott is the first player to hit three BBL centuries, with two of those against the team that delisted him at the end of 2016.Promoted to the top of the order on Christmas Eve, McDermott now has 304 runs in three innings as an opener at a strike rate of 180.95.He clubbed 67 off 43 against Stars and followed it up with an unbeaten 110 off 60 against Adelaide Strikers on Monday. The three monster efforts have led to a hat-trick of wins and put Hurricanes (with four wins and three losses) firmly back in the title hunt after a scratchy start to the season.Renegades (one win and five losses) are staring down the barrel of a third-straight wooden spoon after five consecutive losses.

Heinrich Malan appointed Ireland's new full-time head coach

Malan has previously been batting coach and assistant coach of the New Zealand men’s team

Sreshth Shah04-Jan-2022South Africa-born Heinrich Malan, the 40-year-old former allrounder who has had extensive coaching stints in New Zealand, will succeed Graham Ford as full-time head coach for the Ireland men’s team.Malan is expected to take up the role in March (subject to work permit approval) for three years. He holds a Level 3 Coaching Certificate from Cricket South Africa and his recent coaching stints across 11 years include being the assistant coach and fielding lead for the New Zealand men’s team. He was also the head coach of New Zealand A, and has also held the batting coach role with the senior men’s team. While Malan officially succeeds Ford to the full-time role, he will actually take over from interim head coach David Ripley. Ripley, the former Northamptonshire boss, has accompanied Ireland to their tours of the USA and West Indies after Ford resigned due to fatigue arising from operating in a Covid-19 world.Malan, a former middle-order batter and medium-fast bowler, played first-class cricket in South Africa from 2005 to 2009, and has earned considerable success as a coach outside the New Zealand national team too. Under his coaching, Central Districts Stags won the one-day competition (Ford Trophy) in 2014-15 and 2015-16, the first-class competition (Plunket Shield) in 2017-18 and 2018-19 and the domestic T20 competition (Super Smash) in 2018-19. After switching to Auckland Aces, he won the 2019-20 Ford Trophy as coach. In a press release issued by Cricket Ireland, Malan also credited Ford for creating the “building blocks in place” that will help the men’s team progress further under his coaching.”My coaching philosophy has certainly evolved over time and I am very keen to get to know this group of players and staff to collaboratively shape our environment through the way we want to operate on a daily basis,” Malan said. “The ‘wheel’ in Irish cricket is turning nicely for the stage it is at, but this point in time is a great opportunity to review what – and how – we are operating to not only grow the wheel, but make that wheel turn quicker.”While I came up through the South African system, the opportunity to move to New Zealand in 2013 really enhanced my coaching experiences and created opportunities to progress my coaching career. Hopefully, I can share these experiences and help our players improve and compete consistently across formats. And that is the key – to create greater consistency of performance over the long term.”Richard Holdsworth, the high performance director at Cricket Ireland, said that Malan’s reputation as an innovative coach with an interest in sports science played a role in his appointment. The short-term goal for Ireland, according to Holdsworth, is making greater strides in white-ball cricket.”Despite coming from outside the Irish system, Heinrich clearly articulated an understanding of the Irish cricket identity, and is determined to succeed in bonding the senior squad around these ideals, then flow those ideals down the pathway system,” Holdsworth said. “He fully understands the development stage we are at as a new Full Member, and is clear on the goals of the organisation – but is committed to working hard on building a skilled and confident squad that is competitive with the world’s leading sides.”After the ODI series against USA was called off due to a Covid-19 outbreak in both camps, Ireland are now set to play West Indies in Jamaica for three ODIs – part of the ODI Super League – and one T20I. Malan will join the Ireland set-up in March, just before the team tours Zimbabwe for a series that was postponed from last year.

Ollie Robinson's 112 sets up tantalising final-day title race in Division Three

Tawanda Muyeye unbeaten overnight as Kent eye mammoth fourth-innings run chase

ECB Reporters Network23-Sep-2021The LV= Insurance County Championship Division Three title race is set for a nerve-shredding finale, after Kent reached 275 for 5 in their run chase against Middlesex. The hosts, currently second in the table, need another 98 to overhaul leaders Middlesex, following a pulsating third day at Canterbury.Ollie Robinson hit 112, but he was out to the final ball of the day, caught by John Simpson off Tim Murtagh, who took 2 for 23.Tawanda Muyeye is unbeaten on highest first-class score of 76 not out, after a stand of 128 with Robinson, as Kent recovered from 103 for 4 to give themselves a fighting chance going into day four.Earlier Matt Milnes took 5 for 87 as Middlesex were dismissed for 363, setting Kent a target of 373 to win.The visitors resumed on 298 for 6 and Luke Hollman was out for 29 in the second over of the morning when he chipped Marcus O’Riordan to Nathan Gilchrist at mid-on. Toby Roland-Jones was caught by Jack Leaning at third slip for six, after edging Milnes’ second delivery with the new ball.Related

Milnes then flattened two of Simpson’s stumps to bowl him for 46, cueing an aggressive cameo from Ethan Bamber, who hit 25 from 23 balls before Milnes bowled him middle-stump, leaving Murtagh unbeaten on five.Kent’s chase suffered an early blow when Murtagh had Jordan Cox caught for one at third slip by Robbie White and Daniel Bell-Drummond fell early in the afternoon session, edging Bamber to Stevie Eskinazi at first slip.Martin Andersson had Jack Leaning lbw for seven and Kent’s chances of chasing down the total took a major hit when Zak Crawley was leg before to Roland-Jones for 47.However, Muyeye brought up his maiden first-class 50 when he drove Roland-Jones through cover for four and Robinson was on 75 when he survived a loud appeal when Middlesex were convinced he’d chipped Hollman to Sam Robson at point. Robinson stood his ground and after conferring, the umpires ruled he was not out.Robinson subsequently pushed through Bamber point and scrambled a single to bring up his century, but Middlesex’s decision to take the new ball for the final over of the day was vindicated when Murtagh found his edge and he was caught in the slips.

Maupay arrived instead: Lampard wanted Everton to sign "£100m player"

Everton’s transfer dealings over the years have been questionable to say the least, with their reckless approach undoubtedly contributing to their eight-point deduction last season.

The Toffees were hit with various deductions after breaching the Premier League’s PSR rules, after exceeding the permitted £105m losses over a three-year period.

The combined £47m spent on midfielders Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin proved to be awful dealings, with the pair struggling with injuries during their respective periods at Goodison Park, before both departing the club on free transfers.

Yerry Mina is another example, costing the Toffees £27m back in the summer of 2018, making just under 100 appearances for the club, but also providing no resale value on his big-money transfer.

However, another player in recent times has proven to be a dreadful addition, with his antics off the field tarnishing any relationship he could’ve had with the Everton faithful.

Neal Maupay’s time at Everton

During the summer of 2022, Everton made a surprise move to sign striker Neal Maupay from Brighton, forking out £15m for his services.

everton-neal-maupay-premier-league-fulham

At the time, it seemed like a fair price for a player of Maupay’s Premier League experience, but his move to Merseyside proved to be a disaster for both parties.

The Frenchman only registered one goal in his 32 appearances during the 2022/23 campaign – a disappointing return given the fee paid for his signature.

He subsequently spent last season on loan at former side Brentford, scoring six times in the league for Thomas Frank’s side, returning to Goodison for pre-season this summer.

However, he was subject to abuse by supporters after the 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this season, with the striker speaking out about the incident on social media.

danny-ings-neal-maupay-everton-transfer-news-premier-league

The confrontation would spell the end of his time at the club, moving to Ligue 1 side Marseille during the recent transfer window on loan with an obligation to buy next summer.

On the whole, the move was another example of the club’s poor dealings in the market, but, it gets even worse when the club made the move for the striker over a player who’s taken the Premier League by storm.

The man who Everton missed out on to sign Maupay

Winger Mohammed Kudus joined West Ham United back in the summer of 2023 for a fee in the region of £38m from Eredivisie side Ajax.

West Ham United winger Mohammed Kudus

Since his move to the Premier League, the Ghanaian has thrived, registering 21 goal contributions in all competitions, helping the Hammers cement a top-half finish last season.

As a result of his excellent form at the London Stadium, the 24-year-old has seen his valuation skyrocket, with Kudus described as a “£100m player” by former coach Jeremy Seethal, having also been the subject of interest from Liverpool over the summer.

His move to join the Hammers will be a huge kick in the teeth for Everton, especially considering the Toffees were actually close to signing the attacker during the same summer they pursued a move for Maupay, only for the deal to collapse at the eleventh hour.

Mohammed Kudus for West Ham

Speaking with a Dutch outlet whilst still at Ajax, Kudus confirmed that he wanted a move to Merseyside to gain valuable game time in his career, but that a move never materialised in the end, with former boss Frank Lampard missing out on the addition of a now proven player in England’s top flight.

The club will undoubtedly be kicking themselves that they couldn’t secure a deal for the winger’s services – especially considering his rapid development at West Ham – with Football Insider reporting earlier this year that a deal would have been done had the Toffees’ finances been ‘healthy’.

As for Maupay, the move was a disaster with his transfer fee just one reason as to why the club were docked last season, making the right call in allowing him to depart Goodison this season.

Their goalscoring woes of recent times would’ve been non-existent had they won the race for Kudus’ signature, however, he will always remain one that got away for the Toffees.

As it happened – England vs India, 3rd Test, Headingley, 4th day

Get your dose of analysis, stats and colour from the third Test on ESPNcricinfo’s live blog

Andrew Fidel Fernando28-Aug-2021Day four at Headingley, with Virat Kohli’s India resuming against Joe Root’s England. The visitors still trail by 139 runs. Can they produce another memorable comeback or will the hosts capitalise on their first-innings advantage? Get your updates on ESPNcricinfo’s blog. All timestamps are local time. Ball-by-ball is commentary available here. And here’s our live coverage in Hindi. (Please refresh your page for the latest)It’s all over. IT’S ALL OVER!Overton takes the last two wickets. It’s an utterly emphatic 76-run win for England. What a breathless morning. This was almost more impressive than the first day, when England had substantial help from the conditions. Here, they had blue skies over head, and two batters who were batting comfortably the day before. They had to work a little to open the tap early in the morning, but once they did, the dismissals came like a flash flood. India lost their last eight wickets for 63 runs; their last seven for 41. It was a continuous, rapid unraveling, and they will now have to pick themselves back up.Robinson got the most wickets by a distance, but England hunted as a pack. Anderson was excellent, and was unlucky to get more than his one breakthrough this morning. Overton, who had been good yesterday, came in to wipe out the innings. Moeen Ali produced a wicket with a terrific delivery in the middle somewhere. Sam Curran wasn’t even needed this morning.Head over to our ball-by-ball coverage for presentation details. I’ll be back with the full report a little later.

Robinson gets his fifth!Getty Images

You know the drill by now. It’s fullish, it’s outside off stump, angled in. Ishant doesn’t move his feet, hangs his bat out, the ball takes the edge, the keeper swallows it. This is excellent reward for Robinson, who has been England’s best bowler in the second innings. It’s his second five-wicket haul, to go with the five-for he got in Nottingham, in the first Test of this series.India two wickets away from a big defeat. When will the wickets stop?Moeen Ali into the attack, and straight away, produces a big-spinning beauty, floating it up way wide of off stump, drifting it away slightly, before suddenly the ball dips, grips and rips past Shami’s bat and back into his off stump. It’s all falling apart so quickly for India, who would have begun the day with talk of batting four more sessions, and really gritting out the day. As good as England have been, there have been a lot of mistakes from India too.Robinson strikes again! India lose fourth wicket for 24 runsThis time it’s Pant. He ran at the bowlers a couple of times, attempting to flay them away, but missed. Then he tried a prod outside off stump to a length ball angled across him, and sent the ball to Craig Overton at third slip. India collapsing rapidly and emphatically. Mohammed Shami the No. 8, is at the crease.

Innings victory incoming?India are rapidly running out of wickets and running low on hope. Anderson, who has bowled beautifully this morning, finally gets a wicket for himself. It’s Ajinkya Rahane. This is a length ball outside off stump (you can probably guess I’m about to describe a classic Anderson dismissal). It’s close enough to the stumps that Rahane feels like he has to play, so he pushes his bat out, hard hands. But of course, the ball moves away a touch, takes an appreciable outside edge, and Jos Buttler gobbles it up.England are almost into the tail now. Unless Pant produces something spectacular (and here’s hoping), this could be over by lunch. That wicket, by the way, was Anderson’s 400th at home. There are a lot of all-time great bowlers who didn’t get 400 in total.

But he’s out now! Kohli’s gone. It’s been a scintillating morning, and that over from Robinson – the tenth of the day – epitomised this. First, Kohli whips Robinson through midwicket for four to get to his fifty. It’s not just his first half-century of the series, it’s his first since February. Then he smokes the fifth ball of the over down the ground, beating a diving mid on, suddenly looking like he’s gained some confidence after the nervy early overs. But Robinson has other ideas. Again he goes wide-ish of the crease, and angles a length ball at Kohli which the batter will feel he probably didn’t have to play at. But he prods at it and sends a straightforward catch to Root at slip.India’s two big middle-overs batters are gone. They are still 115 runs behind. England utterly ascendant.

Kohli v Jimmy heats up, and now Kohli’s out… wait, no he isn’t! DRAMA.This is the high-octane battle of the series, has had a high octane over. Second ball, Jimmy pitches it up on a fifth stump line, angled in. Kohli is suckered into the drive as the the ball curves away, only juuuust beating his outside edge (he’d managed to nick the nearly identical delivery that got him out in the first innings.) Next ball, Anderson bowls an inducker and hits him high on the pad, but that one seems to be bouncing over the stumps.Last ball, England think they have him. Anderson is leaping into teammates’ arms, and England are whooping, Headingley in ecstasy around them. The ball was slightly wider, and full, leaving Kohli again. There was a sound as it passes the bat and the umpire has raised his finger. But wait. Kohli reviews, after a quick chat with Rahane. The sound turns out not to be bat on ball, but bat on pad, and it’s clear from snicko and the replay that Kohli hasn’t hit it. He survives. Just. Thrillingly.Biiig shout fourth over…. Pujara’s gone!Getty Images

Pujara’s been leaving dangerously all through the innings, particularly to Robinson, who has frequently angled balls in towards the right-handers’ pads. This time it’s cost him big. This was delivered from slightly wide of the crease and might have nipped back juuust a touch. Pujara is expecting it to swing away and shoulders arms, but it keeps coming with the angle, and hits him just outside off, mid-way up the front pad. Umpire Kettleborough declines to give it out, but this just looked so close on first viewing, it always felt like one England would review. They do. And ball tracking shows the ball crashing into the middle of off stump.Pujara’s going to have to wait longer for that hundred. He doesn’t add to his overnight total. Gone for 91.

Calling for predictions

Personally, I’m hoping for an early mini-collapse from India, before Rishabh Pant comes in and whomps a mindblowing 160 in the company of Mohammad Shami (a-la Angelo Mathews and Herath at Headingley, 2014), to get India about 100 runs ahead. This doesn’t seem like enough at first, but then Jasprit Bumrah gets five wickets in a spell, and we go to stumps with England needing 20 to win and just two wickets in hand, setting us up for a tensest of fifth-day mornings.A boy can dream.Showdown incoming10:40amGetty Images

Three days, 22 wickets, 725 runs, and it’s all led up to this high-stakes morning at Headingley. In the blue corner are India’s two most experienced batters, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli, who had skidded their way through the series on modest scores, but discovered something of their most resilient selves on Friday. They battled through difficult spells under gloomy skies to put on 99 together, giving India some hope of making England bat again. Pujara is on 91 – nine runs short of his first century in over 36 months. Kohli is five runs short of his first fifty since February. Happily for them, the sun is said to be out at Headingley, which technically should make batting easier. In the red corner, though, is the great grump-faced grandaddy of swing bowling, James Anderson, who frequently makes the ball do mocking orbits of the batter before it seeks out his edge then a pair of hands in the slips. He was unplayable at the top of day one, dismissing both Pujara and Kohli with outstanding deliveries. He’ll have a brand new Dukes ball, which whom he has built a partnership more impressive than Lennon+McCartney (and which has lasted longer too). He’ll also have a cohort of right-arm acolytes – Ollie Robinson (who was excellent yesterday), Craig Overton, and Sam Curran in support.Who will triumph? Stick around and find out.

Imagine him & Odobert: Spurs readying bid for "breathtaking" new signing

Tottenham Hotspur do not kick off their 2024/25 Premier League campaign until they travel to the King Power stadium to take on Leicester City on Monday night.

Ange Postecoglou and his team have been able to watch the opening weekend of the division unfold before they take to the field in the last match of the gameweek.

The Australian head coach will surely be eyeing up a minimum target of securing a top four position in the league this term, having missed out on Champions League football last season.

Daniel Levy has dipped into the transfer market to strengthen the squad during the summer transfer window, in an attempt to improve the manager's options across the park.

Archie Gray has been brought in from Leeds United, Dominic Solanke was snapped up from Bournemouth, and Wilson Odobert is the latest recruit from Burnley – with all three joining on a permanent basis.

There are still just under two weeks left to go before the end of the summer transfer window and this means that there could be further additions before the deadline passes.

Tottenham are still reportedly in the market to make further additions to the group, with a defender seemingly on the agenda for the Lilywhites.

Spurs preparing bid for Brazilian ace

According to reports in Brazil, Levy is readying a Spurs bid to sign right-back Vanderson from AS Monaco before the end of the month.

The reporter claims that the Premier League side are prepared to offer €32m (£27m) as an initial fee for the Brazilian defender, along with add-ons and bonuses to take it beyond that.

This shows that the Lilywhites are serious about a swoop for the former Gremio whiz, as they are willing to pay a significant sum of money to add him to their squad.

Andrade does not reveal whether or not that will be enough to tempt the Ligue 1 outfit into cashing in on the full-back, but adds that the two clubs are in ongoing talks over a potential deal for the 23-year-old star.

It had previously been reported that Spurs are looking at Vanderson as a replacement for Emerson Royal, who recently completed a permanent move to AC Milan.

Emerson's exit from the club has left Pedro Porro as Postecoglou's only senior option at right-back, which is why a move for the Monaco defender does make a lot of sense this month.

If Tottenham can get a deal for Vanderson over the line before the end of the window then he could be a dream addition to play behind Odobert, who has just signed from Burnley.

What Wilson Odobert could bring to Spurs

Firstly, it is worth remembering that the French talent is only 19 and it would be unfair to expect great things from him in his first season at the club.

He only has 29 games of Premier League experience under his belt for Burnley and will need time to continue to adjust to the league and to first-team football.

However, despite his age and inexperience, Odobert is an exciting player who could still produce moments of quality in a Spurs shirt when given an opportunity to perform this season.

As you can see in the table above, the teenage whiz did well with the chances that fell his way as he scored three goals from just 2.81 xG for the relegated side.

Meanwhile, his teammates let him down with their wasteful finishing as they could only find the back of the net two times from his seven 'big chances' created.

Odobert ranked within the top 31% of midfielders in the division for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.14) and the top 29% for shot-creating actions per 90 (3.21), which shows that he was an above-average creator in the Premier League.

The 19-year-old sensation also started the current campaign in fantastic form with a goal and a 'big chance' created against Luton Town in the Championship before his move to Spurs was completed.

Tottenham could now land a perfect right-back to play behind the winger, who can play on the left or the right flank, by landing Vanderson this month.

Why Vanderson would be perfect for Odobert

To understand why the Brazilian would be an ideal partner for the Frenchmen, it is first worth noting that the former Burnley man is not the strongest out of possession.

Odobert lost 55% of his duels in the Premier League last season and ranked within the bottom 18% or lower of his positional peers for clearances, aerial battles won, tackles, and interceptions per 90 respectively.

This suggests that Spurs would, before the winger develops and improves that side of his game, need a defensively strong full-back behind him to make up for the youngster's lack of defensive awareness.

Vanderson's form in Ligue 1 for Monaco last season suggests that he would be the perfect player to support Odobert down the flank, due to his ability to compete in and win duels.

The Brazilian defender did not provide a huge attacking threat, with three goals and one assist, in his 20 Ligue 1 outings last term, but did showcase his defensive quality with a whopping 4.8 tackles and interceptions combined per match.

As you can see in the table above, Vanderson was one of the best full-backs in the French top-flight in a host of defensive statistics in the 2023/24 campaign.

The 23-year-old ace, who U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed has "breathtaking energy", also started the current Ligue 1 season in sensational form on Saturday.

He assisted one goal, created two 'big chances', made six tackles and interceptions combined, and won 57% of his duels against Saint-Etienne – showing off his ability in and out of possession.
