Leeds star who was sold by Bielsa now plays in Turkish 2nd tier

Leeds United ended their three-year stay in the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 campaign as they were relegated back down to the Championship.

The Whites had been promoted to the top-flight back in the summer of 2020 after Marcelo Bielsa led the team to the second division title in his second season at the club.

Former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.

He was a huge success at Elland Road and made a number of impressive decisions over the course of his stay in Yorkshire, including the sale of former Leeds star Samu Saiz, who he played a blinder with.

Samu Saiz's career at Leeds

The club swooped to sign the Spanish maestro from Huesca in the summer of 2017, and he caught the eye throughout his debut season in England under Thomas Christiansen and, then, Paul Heckingbottom.

Often deployed as a number ten in a 4-2-3-1 system, the right-footed whiz offered quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals throughout the 2017/18 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the Whites midfielder was a star for the club with contributions at the top end of the pitch, given that he led the team in dribbles per match and was second only to Pablo Hernandez in key passes per game.

Bielsa then arrived in the summer of 2018 and described Sainz as the "most skilled" player in the squad. However, the Spaniard failed to hit the same heights in front of goal with a return of zero goals and four assists in 19 Championship appearances during the first half of the campaign.

The Argentine boss was ruthless in his approach as he allowed the attacking midfielder to leave on loan to join Getafe for the second half of the season, before cashing in on a permanent basis in the summer of 2019.

Where Samu Saiz plays now

It was reported that the talented gem was not settled in Leeds and wanted a return to his home country. Instead of trying to convince the 5 foot 9 star to remain at Elland Road, Bielsa – and sporting director Victor Orta – allowed him to sign for Girona on a permanent deal ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Saiz went on to produce 12 goals and 17 assists in 119 appearances for the Spanish outfit, with the majority of those games coming in the second division in Spain, before his move to Sivasspor in Turkey in January 2023.

Former Leeds midfielder Samu Saiz.

He racked up an eye-catching nine goals and seven assists in 35 outings for the club, and then made the switch to Eyupspor in January of this year.

The former Leeds whiz is, therefore, now playing in the second tier of football in Turkey, with his current club sitting at the top of the table as it stands.

Saiz has contributed with one goal and zero assists in seven league outings for Eyupspor, and lost 72% of his duels, since his move from Sivasspor in January.

Overall, Bielsa played a blinder with the sale of the Spanish wizard as his career never really kicked on after his spell in Yorkshire, with a long spell in Spain's second tier before a transfer to Turkey – outside of Europe's major leagues – and now their second tier, whilst Leeds went on to win promotion to the Premier League.

Ten Hag must start Man Utd’s “sensational” gem over Antony

Manchester United progressed to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup on Wednesday evening, as they narrowly defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0.

This was an important victory, not just in the sense of the game in isolation, but because they simply had to bounce back from the 2-1 home defeat to Fulham last weekend.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after a Premier League game.

However, the Manchester derby awaits Erik ten Hag’s side on Sunday, with the Red Devils going into the tie as the heavy underdog against imperious rivals, Manchester City.

That said, the return of one individual who barely featured against Forest could just give them a much better chance of victory than if Antony was to start from the off.

Antony’s performance versus Forest

It’s well known that Antony has performed way below the potential he once showcased at Ajax and even during the start of his United career.

The Brazilian has yet to register a goal contribution in the Premier League this season, despite playing 20 games, and because of that, he’s lost his spot in the side to Alejandro Garnacho.

Manchester United's Antony.

However, the 24-year-old did show glimpses of improvement against the Tricky Trees on Wednesday night, his first start against a Premier League club since December.

The winger retained the ball extremely well and combined nicely when drifting inside from the right, as shown by his 95% pass accuracy and 58 touches.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, unlike what we’ve seen for most of this season, the number 21 was willing to take a few risks, shooting three times and registering four key passes.

Despite it being an improved performance, he didn’t quite do enough to warrant a start on Sunday, and he should drop to the bench for a very special prospect.

ByTom Lever Mar 1, 2024 Why Kobbie Mainoo must return to the starting XI

Kobbie Mainoo earned himself a well-deserved rest on Wednesday after being thrown in at the deep end and starting all 12 games prior.

But there’s no doubt that the 6 foot 18-year-old should return to the team ahead of the huge clash against City, despite his lack of experience.

Earlier this season, Ten Hag’s team held Liverpool to an impressive 0-0 draw at Anfield, becoming the only team to keep a clean sheet against the Reds all season, and a very similar game plan is expected this weekend.

Mainoo started that game alongside Sofyan Amrabat, where he showed his defensive abilities as well as his composure in possession, as can be seen in the table below.

At the Etihad, Pep Guardiola’s side is guaranteed to dominate the ball, which means that when the visitors do get hold of it, they simply cannot be wasteful, which is where the “sensational” Mainoo will help, as called by journalist Liam Canning.

The number 37’s role in the team could mirror the task that Fred used to undertake when playing City, marking Kevin De Bruyne from the first whistle to the last.

This could see Scott McTominay keep his place in the side and Bruno Fernandes move to a right midfield role, like he played in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

Despite his age, Mainoo is more than up to the task of frustrating City, and he simply has to return to the side on Sunday.

Can the Sheffield Shield answer these Test questions?

The openersDavid Warner is coming off the worst Test series for any opener who batted at least 10 times. However, all indications are that Warner is a lock for Brisbane based on his phenomenal overall record compared to those vying for his spot. Marcus Harris will be under pressure as the incumbent having made just two half-centuries in nine Tests and the selectors will think long and hard about a left-right combination.Cameron Bancroft lost his place after four failures in the Ashes and would need a string of huge Shield scores to earn a recall. Joe Burns will be the most intriguing man to watch. He made 180 in his last Test match, and then another century against Sussex during the Australia A tour of the UK prior to the Ashes after recovering from post-viral fatigue, yet he missed the Ashes squad entirely. With four Test hundreds in 16 Tests, it is hard to fathom how he has not earned an extended run. Matt Renshaw is the forgotten man following a lean summer last year but runs in the Shield games will put him back into the equation. The other question surrounds Usman Khawaja. There seems little doubt he is among Australia’s best six batsmen in home conditions but given Marnus Labuschagne’s impressive performances at No. 3 in the Ashes, does Khawaja open with Warner given his outstanding record in his brief opening stints at Test level?

The middle orderLabuschagne and Steven Smith look set to become Australia’s permanent combination at three and four unless the selectors wish to return Khawaja to No. 3 for home assignments which would mean Labuschagne would need to be shifted down. Matthew Wade probably did enough to keep his spot for the start of the home summer but, as he articulated after his century at The Oval, there are no guarantees.Australia are desperate for an allrounder at No. 6 to support the fast bowling cartel on the flatter Australian surfaces. Mitchell Marsh is the preferred option and while he bowled superbly at The Oval he did not answer any of the ongoing questions surrounding his batting at Test level. With two day-night Tests in the first three matches this summer, the selectors may opt for a specialist at No. 6. Tim Paine made it clear Travis Head had not necessarily been dropped on form but rather squeezed out for the allrounder. Head is one of the vice-captains and the selectors would love to get him back into the side sooner rather than later to continue his development. He would likely be the first cab off the rank.Kurtis Patterson should be in the mix given he made a century in his last Test while Will Pucovski is a watching brief. Runs in the first four Shield rounds will send the Australian public Pucovski crazy and could force the selectors’ hand, maybe before they are ready to introduce him.The preferred fast bowlersProvided Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are fit, they are locks for the first Test and beyond. Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson and Jhye Richardson will be vying for the third spot. The next couple of months could indicate whether the Ashes was a last hurrah at Test level for Peter Siddle. Starc and Pattinson could be selected in alternate games in order to manage their workloads and maximise their effectiveness while Richardson appears the understudy for either Cummins or Hazlewood. He is almost back to full fitness now having overcome his shoulder injury but he is still unable to throw without inhibition.

Who is Nathan Lyon’s understudyOne of the threads that got lost during an Ashes series with endless talking points was the fact that Australia did not pick a second spinner for the tour. The selectors had incredible faith in Nathan Lyon’s durability and form that no one was selected as cover. Jon Holland was the spinner on the Australia A tour after playing in the UAE last year, but whether he is Lyon’s understudy should the offspinner suffer an injury is a different question. By all rights, he should be but Ashton Agar’s return to fitness and his ever-present lure as an all-round package of sorts will keep the selectors interested, even if his bowling alone isn’t at Holland’s level. Steve O’Keefe’s file appears to be stamped but he will continue to take wickets for NSW when he plays.Australia are set to tour Bangladesh next year and one or two spinners will need to accompany Lyon as Agar and O’Keefe did in 2017. Can a legspinner like Mitch Swepson or Lloyd Pope bolt from the blue with a big home summer? For these reasons the development of Labuschagne’s legspin is also important.

Mignon du Preez takes Loughborough to Finals Day

Mignon du Preez scored an unbeaten 48 for Loughborough Lightning to send her side to a second successive Kia Super League Finals Day, while knocking holders Surrey Stars out the competition.South African du Preez is Lightning’s highest scorer in the KSL this season with 246 runs, having previously made unbeaten scores of 70 and 38, before clattering 48 in 25 balls at Haslegrave Ground, Loughborough on Friday. She finished the job with a four down the ground with nine balls to spare, after Chamari Atapattu had brilliantly notched 45 from 35 balls.Stars had scored what seemed like a competitive 147 for 7, thanks to Nat Sciver’s first half-century of the tournament and Sarah Taylor’s second fifty in a row.But the hosts chased well to set up a date with either Southern Vipers or Yorkshire Diamonds in Hove – with unbeaten Western Storm waiting in the final.”We are super excited to go to Finals Day,” du Preez said. “It was something we really wanted to do and to get there with two games to spare is super special. The key thing will be to keep the momentum into Finals Day, we want to keep the winning ways going.”Big hitting isn’t something I had been known for. In my ODI career, I have only hit three sixes in over 100 games, so to actually hit them frequently in games shows I have been working on that area of my game. I also usually struggle with staying to the finish, I usually get in and then get out, so to get those not outs and score runs consistently was one of my big goals.”Loughborough’s response had started in poor fashion as Amy Jones was run out by Dane van Niekerk, before Marizanne Kapp bowled a maiden.Having been involved in the Jones run out, Hayley Matthews seemed to feel some responsibility to score quickly, as she helped thunder 24 runs off the third and fourth overs. But the West Indian was stumped off Mady Villiers in the fifth.Georgia Elwiss and Atapattu settled things down and added 49 in exactly six overs for the third wicket before the former was stumped.Sri Lankan Atapattu used her power to take Lightning up to, along, and then above the required rate – with six boundaries and a straight six, before she was bowled by Laura Marsh.Du Preez, who had put on 41 with Atapattu, clubbed a quartet of balls over the ropes, and despite seeing Georgia Adams run out, saw her side to a comfortable five-wicket win.Earlier, the Stars only managed 29 runs in the Powerplay, after winning the toss, and had already lost both openers Lizelle Lee and Dane van Niekerk within the first 32 balls.Lee was lbw to Kathryn Bryce to the first ball of the game before South African teammate van Niekerk was bowled by Jenny Gunn. But Sciver and Taylor ticked the score along and slowly started to accelerate – the former playing conventionally, while keeper Taylor utilised her supple wrists to claim five flicked boundaries behind the bat.Skipper Sciver was the first to fifty, off 31 balls, having tickled Atapattu for a boundary before arriving at the milestone with a hoicked single into the leg side. It was the first time she had scored a KSL half-century since the semi-final against Western Storm last year.Sciver departed when she offered a catch to extra cover for 53, having put on 87 with Taylor – the third time the duo had added more than 48 together in this season’s competition.Taylor arrived at the 50 landmark in 45 balls with back-to-back boundaries off Bryce, but the Scotland captain had the last laugh next ball with a slower ball yorker. Surrey lost Kapp, Bryony Smith and Villiers in the last seven balls but managed to reach 147 for seven, despite Gunn’s exceptional 2 for 19.

"Massive blow" – Pundit reacts to West Brom exit rumour on star player

One pundit has been giving his reaction to the news that a West Bromwich Albion regular could be leaving The Hawthorns before the end of the month.

West Brom transfer news

So far this month, Carlos Corberan has added to his attacking ranks after losing the loan services of Jeremy Sarmiento. The 21-year-old has since joined Championship rivals Ipswich Town, however, the Baggies have raided second-tier side Bristol City for Andreas Weimann.

The Austrian has put pen to paper on a loan deal until the end of the season, whereas Callum Marshall has also arrived from West Ham, and there could be further additions before the deadline on February 1.

Celtic wingers Liel Abada and Mikey Johnston have emerged as winter window targets, but there is also the possibility of a number of exits. Reports have claimed that West Brom are in talks with Trabzonspor over a move to allow Okay Yokuslu to return to his former club, whereas youngster Tom Fellows is being looked at by Leicester City and Southampton.

Kyle Bartley is another who has been linked with an exit from the Midlands.

Luton Town eyeing move for West Brom’s Kyle Bartley

According to recent rumours from The Telegraph, Bartley is on a list of targets for Premier League side Luton Town in the final days of the January transfer window.

“West Brom defender Kyle Bartley is on a shortlist of centre-backs on Luton’s radar to strengthen Rob Edwards’ back line. Bartley, 32, has experience in the Premier League with Swansea and his current club and has six months left on his deal at the Hawthorns, where he has been a regular this season in the club’s bid for promotion to the Premier League.”

Reacting to the rumours, BBC pundit Carlton Palmer claimed it would be a “massive blow” for West Brom and Corberan if he does leave. Talking to Football League World, he said:

"Bartley is one of the best defenders in the Championship, and has Premier League experience with over 50 appearances. Luton Town have identified Bartley as a potential signing, but with West Brom fifth in the Championship table, in a play-off place and aiming for a play-off spot, they would be reluctant to let the player go in January.

"However, Bartley is out of contract in the summer, and with the club no further ahead with the takeover, any suitable offer, you would assume, would be accepted by the West Bromwich Albion board. This would be a massive blow for West Brom and Carlos Corberan, in his attempts to achieve what he is trying to do this season."

The 32-year-old, hailed as “incredible” in 2022 by pundit Kevin Campbell, has been a regular under Corberan and has made 185 appearances for West Brom, more than any other club during his career.

Crystal Palace line up Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna as Roy Hodgson replacement

Crystal Palace have been a mixed bag in the Premier League this term and look to have identified a potential long-term successor to Roy Hodgson, according to a report.

Roy Hodgson's future at Crystal Palace in doubt

Despite speculation that Crystal Palace could sack Hodgson if they were to fall to defeat against Brentford last weekend, the Eagles recorded a comfortable 3-1 victory at Selhurst Park, prompting the 76-year-old to hit back at recent rumours in his post-match press conference.

Hodgson stated: "I'm 76 years of age. I've been working 47 years, I've got a CBE for my services and I've got a CV which is incredible. So, my final answer to you is that it makes no difference [talk of potential Crystal Palace departure]."

Crystal Palace leading race to sign "outstanding" player ahead of rivals

The Eagles could receive a January boost…

ByTom Cunningham Dec 24, 2023

The Sun claimed last week that former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper is said to be on Crystal Palace's wishlist as they look to replace Hodgson and he is supposedly "open-minded" to the possibility of stepping into the Selhurst Park dugout.

One source told the publication when explaining the permutations of the Welshman taking over in South London: "Palace are very interested in Steve Cooper, but there are no immediate plans to part ways with Roy Hodgson. Roy’s a legend at the club and will be treated with the respect he’s earned and which he merits. One option being looked at is whether a deal can be agreed for Cooper to join in the summer and for Hodgson to stay on until then."

Nevertheless, new reports suggest that an up-and-coming star in the coaching world could be next in line to succeed Hodgson at Selhurst Park once the veteran departs the club.

Crystal Palace eye Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna

According to The Sun, Crystal Palace could battle it out with rivals Brighton & Hove Albion to try and appoint Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, who has directed his side into an automatic promotion battle in the Championship this campaign.

The report states that a summer move would be most likely in the event the 37-year-old ended up at the Eagles, given that they are still behind Hodgson and also factoring in the difficulties that would arise trying to finalise a deal with McKenna while he is in the middle of a battle for promotion.

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna.

McKenna left Manchester United to take on his first venture into senior management with Ipswich Town in 2021 and achieved promotion at Portman Road in 2022/23 after his side finished runners-up in League One.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, pundit Gary Lineker labelled the former Red Devils' coach as the best manager in English football outside of the Premier League, stating: "I’m going to go with Kieran McKenna from Ipswich Town. I think he’s done a brilliant job with them. He’s young, he was a youth coach at Manchester United, and was at Tottenham a bit before that."

Crystal Palace will be keen to ensure the future after Hodgson is clear and McKenna would be a fantastic appointment who would fit the bill as an exciting hire at Selhurst Park.

But while relations between the two parties are reportedly good, Milan will likely have to up their bid as Sesko's performances have seen his release clause increase to €65m (£56m/$70m) – and it could go as high as €73m (£63m/$79m) before the window opens. Milan may have to cough up even more if Arsenal hang on in race as the Italian club look to find a replacement for Olivier Giroud, who will join Los Angeles FC as a free agent on July 1.

  • WHAT'S BEEN SAID ABOUT SESKO?

Despite the fact the fees being quoted are fairly large, Slovenia manager Matjaz Kek believes Sesko would be a bargain for any top European club. When asked whether the striker would be a good fit at Milan, he told : “It’s not a question for me. Let me explain: I am happy with how he is growing at Leipzig and in general, his evolution as a footballer. This is why he is becoming increasingly important to Slovenia as well. The point is whether he will change club. All I can say is that whoever signs him will make a bargain. Sesko does not disappoint.”
