Bellingham, Vinicius and Carvajal have all been tipped to potentially win the Ballon d'Or in October, after Madrid won La Liga and the Champions League. The England international enjoyed a sensational debut season and guided England to the final of Euro 2024, Vinicius registered 35 goal involvements in 39 games for the Spanish giants, and Carvajal won the European Championship with Spain after his trophy-laden club campaign.

Ancelotti has weighed in on the prospect of one of his players winning the Ballon d'Or once the ceremony rolls around. Lionel Messi is the current holder of the award, but Karim Benzema was the last Madrid player to win the award, doing so in 2022.

WHAT ANCELOTTI SAID

Ancelotti told the Obi One podcast: "My opinion on who's gonna win, Vinicius Jr because he is a talented player. He did really well last season. It's true that Carvajal was also really well because Carvajal won the league, won the Champions League, scoring, and won the European Cup. And Jude did a fantastic season, winning the Champions League and winning the league. It was a big surprise, the best player of the league. I think it's not the most important. Try to ask the player, if you interview the player, 'do you prefer to win the Champions League or the Ballon d'Or'? Champions League!"

Liverpool’s 8/10 star has made himself undroppable after Man City

At its best, Anfield projects quite a noise, but break that noise up and it will reveal itself in several parts. There is the obvious, deafening roar of the Liverpool faithful. This is the crash of a sea of red, described as a "tsunami" by Pep Guardiola on Saturday evening.

There is also the other, ineffable noise, threaded into Liverpool's very core and brought to life under Jurgen Klopp's leadership. This is the noise that subdued a Manchester City side with a fitter squad and, ostensibly, better available players.

Jurgen Klopp embraces Pep Guardiola.

The Premier League saw its final showdown between the two great managers of a generation yesterday, and while a draw was the outcome, Liverpool proved themselves worthy of the title once again with a stunning display, with Alexis Mac Allister's second-half penalty turning the tide.

Alexis Mac Allister's stats vs Manchester City

Virgil van Dijk's captaincy is so important for Liverpool but multiple leaders were missing for the home side, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota injured (among others) and Andy Robertson starting from the bench.

Mac Allister, though, once again proved himself to be the centrepiece of Klopp's machine, netting the all-important equaliser and controlling the fluency of a second half that can only be put as a barrage of Liverpool assaults – punctuated, in fairness, by some near Citizen misses.

Praised for his "outstanding" display by football writer Josh Williams, the Argentine general took 82 touches, completed 82% of his passes, succeeded with his one attempted dribble, won eight of his 13 ground duels and made four tackles, as per Sofascore.

Mac Allister's brilliant; he's really blossomed into a world-class star after a promising but fluctuating opening to his Merseyside career, but for all his brilliance, it might just be anchorman Wataru Endo who was the biggest winner after a sensational effort against the best midfield in the world in Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.

Wataru Endo's performance in numbers

Liverpool signed Endo from Stuttgart for £16m back in August after bitterly losing out to both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea, and while there were some bemused faces initially, the Japan international has proved to be one of the shrewdest signings in recent memory.

His task on Saturday, quite simply, was staggering. Manchester City assert themselves like no other outfit on the planet and while Liverpool were on the back foot initially, they grew into the game and Endo's presence at the core was indeed vital, completing a mightily impressive 96% of his passes and losing just one duel.

The 31-year-old won Liverpool's Player of the Month for December before jetting off to the Asia Cup, but he's since returned to continue a brilliant maiden campaign in England that has already bred silverware and could yet see more illustrious heights reached.

Writing in his post-match comments, The Independent's Karl Matchett handed Endo an 8/10 score – the same as Mac Allister – and said: 'Combative, non-stop energy in the centre. Impressive against De Bruyne as the Belgian faded.'

Of course, he wasn't perfect, failing to negate De Bruyne's threat in its entirety, but then, a player of the Belgian's quality will fashion openings regardless of opponent and he did as good a job as good have been imagined.

Endo has proved himself an invaluable member of Klopp's trophy-chasing unit and must continue his placement in the holding midfield for the looming run-in. He might just play a defining role in a grand send-off for his soon-to-step-down manager.

Newcastle could soon bin £55k-p/w outcast who earns more than Wilson

Newcastle have had something of a hard time this season. That is, in comparison to their triumphs the campaign prior. It now feels as if they have taken two steps back rather than forward as they would've hoped.

The team currently find themselves ninth in the Premier League table and have lost a total of 11 games so far.

The amount of defeats that they have suffered this season is more than double that of the amount they suffered throughout the entirety of the 2022/23 campaign.

Granted, the amount of first-team injuries they have suffered needs to be taken into account. However, they should have more than enough quality within the depth of their squad to be placed higher in the table.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

One player who provides that depth is a certain Emil Krafth, but it may well be time to sever ties with the defensive outcast in the next window.

Emil Krafth's wage at Newcastle

As per Capology, the defender currently earns a whopping £55k-per-week at St James' Park, and although for a Premier League player, this weekly wage may not seem too over the top, it does place Krafth's earnings higher than that of Newcastle's star man, Callum Wilson.

Remarkably, Wilson earns a total of £46k-per-week, which is £9,000 less than what the Sweden international earns despite his lack of regular football lately.

The right-back was signed by the Magpies back in 2019 for a reported fee of £5m. Upon joining the Tyneside club, he signed a five-year deal which was set to keep him in Black and White colours until summer 2024.

However, on 14th February 2024, the 29-year-old signed a one-year extension with Newcastle, perhaps rather surprisingly.

Indeed, since arriving at the club, Krafth has amassed a total of 73 appearances in all competitions. During this time, he has also managed to contribute to a total of three goals, each of which came in the Premier League.

Despite the injury crisis Newcastle have found themselves going through this season, the right-back has still only managed a total of nine appearances and was even left out of their Champions League squad.

What makes matters worse is the fact that he has only started two games this season, which came in the Carabao Cup, and he hasn't even been injured to force him to miss any games.

This begs the question, why keep a player around if they're not a regular starter for your team?

Indeed, Krafth is a solid backup, but the fact he is now earning more than Wilson is nothing short of incredible.

Callum Wilson's season in numbers

Throughout the entirety of his career, Wilson has fallen victim to the injuries he often sustains. This season has been no different, as the England international has missed a total of 18 games so far through injury.

Despite often being injured, the striker has managed to score a total of seven top-flight goals in the league to date.

Although by his standards, these are rookie numbers, this return still places him in the top three goalscorers in the Premier League for Newcastle this season.

So, the fact that Krafth, who has been minimally involved this season, is on more money than the 31-year-old seems confusing.

Additionally, now the Sweden international has signed an extension, Eddie Howe could get a decent fee for the right-back, which makes now as good of a time as any to get rid of him.

Another rejig in Vijay Hazare Trophy schedule following spate of abandonments

Vadodara, like Bengaluru, has been affected by wet weather, with none of the games in Group B producing a result so far

The BCCI has reworked the schedule for the rain-hit Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20 again, while still keeping some room for more matches affected by the weather.ESPNcricinfo had earlier reported that a schedule change was in the works for Group B in Vadodara and the Plate Group in Dehradun after the Group A games in Bengaluru were rescheduled. That allowance made in the new schedule for further rain-affected games will prove crucial with matches on Saturday being hit by rain once again.ALSO READ: Rain-affected games in Bengaluru leg of Vijay Hazare Trophy rescheduledESPNcricinfo understands that a provision was made in the new schedule to make sure that if there were more than three matches abandoned before October 8, they would be fitted in as far as possible from October 9 to 17, but in such a way that no team plays more than two back-to-back games. If no suitable slot can be found for a match, it will stay abandoned. All three matches in the new schedule, effective from September 28, for Group B in Vadodara were washed out on Saturday without a ball bowled, meaning that not a single game has produced a result in the city so far. There was no play on September 24 and 26 in Vadodara and on September 25 all three matches had to be abandoned midway. Those nine games are part of the new schedule, though with the weather continuing to be bleak in Vadodara, getting all of them completed may yet prove to be a challenge.Reworking the schedule for games in Group B in Vadodara has proved particularly tricky, with some of the grounds available only after specific days, and it needed more than one iteration to arrive at the final order of play. That exercise meant the reworked schedule for Group B took longer to come out, to the extent that even players seemed unaware till late on Friday who they would be playing the next day. ESPNcricinfo spoke to a number of players from Group B in the second half on Friday, but none of them were aware of the tweaks made.As for the Plate Group, it is understood that games that are abandoned going forward will not be rescheduled as there are no reserve days in this group.

Matthew Lamb turns wolf with 173 to dent Essex hopes

Young batsman turns maiden first-class hundred into a daddy as Warwickshire pile up 517

Jon Culley at Edgbaston11-Sep-2019
Essex have not conceded so many runs since Hampshire piled up 525 for 8 in the first innings at Southampton in the opening match of the season, when they lost by an innings and 87 runs. Having gone unbeaten since, chalking up eight victories and eyeing up a second County Championship in three years, this would not be a timely moment to become reacquainted with defeat.Such an eventuality is some way off. Unless Jeetan Patel can coax a greater response from a slow pitch than Simon Harmer achieved in 60 overs of trying, the likeliest result is a draw. Nonetheless, with leaders Somerset building a considerable advantage against Yorkshire at Taunton, this could be a critical moment in the race for the title. For Warwickshire’s part, a draw and a handful of bonus points would do very nicely, almost certainly banishing any lingering anxiety about relegation with Nottinghamshire heading for yet another defeat. At the heart of Warwickshire’s rare prosperity was a magnificent innings from 23-year-old Matthew Lamb, who turned his maiden first-class century into a seven-hour marathon that eventually saw him out for 173, which is, after Dom Sibley’s double-hundred at Canterbury in June, the highest score by a Warwickshire batsman this year.Lamb’s potential has long been waiting to blossom. Warwickshire identified his talent when he was only 11 and he made his Birmingham League debut at 13. His first-class debut for the county came in 2016 but although he made a couple of half-centuries the following year he has not been able yet to nail down a place. Although he made a good impression in T20, his first six first-class innings this year yielded just 29 runs in total and he would not be involved in this match but for four batsmen being injured. There is a fair chance he will be picked for the next one, having batted with a solid technique and considerable maturity in the face of an Essex attack not helped much by a slow pitch but who nonetheless offer one of the bigger tests he will have faced thus far. Jamie Porter and Sam Cook had bowled well without much luck on the opening day and Simon Harmer, as he has demonstrated time after time in taking 200-plus wickets in three seasons with Essex, tests a batsman’s skill in any conditions.Lamb had some moments of fortune, although not before he had recovered from the setback of losing Sam Hain’s company in the seventh over of the day and held his nerve to complete a 211-ball hundred with his 15th boundary. He was caught at slip off a Ravi Bopara no-ball on 104, survived a huge appeal for caught behind off Porter on 106 and was dropped on 110 in an incident that also saw Essex appeal for a run-out, which was upheld and then rescinded.Alastair Cook, moving to his left at first slip, spilled the chance when Porter found the edge. Harmer, standing next to him at second slip, retrieved the ball and threw down the stumps. Lamb was well out of his ground but, after the umpires conferred, was invited to continue his innings, the apparent conclusion being that he had deserted his crease only under the misapprehension that he was out caught, in which circumstances under a recent tweak to the Laws, a batsman can be deemed to be not out.Harmer said later that he had been happy to withdraw the appeal and Lamb confirmed that the Essex fielders had made it clear to him that, as far they were concerned, he should not be out.How he made the most of that let-off, adding a further 10 boundaries and, having helped Hain add 150 in 49 overs for the fourth wicket, enjoying the benefit of another resilient partner in Henry Brookes, with whom he shared a 105-run partnership for the seventh wicket that was the key passage of the day in securing such a strong position for their side.Immediately before they came together, three wickets had fallen for seven runs in the space of 22 balls. Michael Burgess had followed Hain in edging into the slip cordon, Harmer grabbing a superb catch low to his left at second slip, before the debutant Ethan Brookes – Henry’s younger brother – popped a ball from Harmer into the hands of leg slip.Brookes the elder proved to be the perfect partner, although Lamb ultimately repaid him by calling for a risky single to leg and running him out four runs short of what would have been his fourth career half-century. “I owe him an apology for that,” Lamb said after Harmer had gathered and scored a direct hit with his throw. “It was my fault completely.”Patel further turned the screw with a half-century of his own before Harmer, who had only once bowled 50 overs in an innings for Essex and never 60, dismissed Olly Hannon-Dalby and George Garrett to finish with 6 for 143.”It was a pretty frustrating day for us,” Harmer said. “There is not much in the pitch. If we can bat well then you would expect the match to end in a draw but you never know what could happen when we get to day four.”The Essex reply, though, did not get the start they wanted in the 15 overs they had to negotiate before the close, Patel striking an early blow when Cook edged him to second slip.

Fallouts on TV & ‘different role’? What to expect from Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2024 as record-breaking Portuguese GOAT enters 11th international tournament

Cristiano Ronaldo has been warned that he may have to accept a “different role” at Euro 2024, but there are not expected to be “fallouts on TV”.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The five-time Ballon d’Or may be part of the long-running GOAT conversation, alongside eternal rival Lionel Messi, but there is no escaping the fact that he is now 39 years of age. Most players have hung up their boots long before reaching that age, but Ronaldo is still going strong in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr.

    WHAT BROWN SAID

Having hit 50 goals at club level in 2023-24 and has 130 for his country through 207 appearances, Ronaldo is showing no sign of slowing down. However, former Manchester United team-mate Wes Brown has told the podcast of what CR7 should expect from another European Championship quest: “I think he will start, but ultimately I don't think he's going to play the whole game. I think he'll understand that. He's a great player to have coming off the bench, someone who is a shoo-in for goals, with his scoring record. It is as simple as that. I do think he will play a different role. And it will be good for him to not play a game. He will just come on for 20 minutes, and then see how far they can get.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo, who is entering his 11th major international tournament, has never been one to settle for second best or a standing outside of the limelight. Brown is, however, confident that any debates regarding bench duty at Euro 2024 will be kept away from the cameras. He added on the potential for drama in Germany: “You've got to respect the manager and the manager will respect Ronaldo. It's as simple as that with what he's achieved in football, and they will have that discussion at some point. So I don't think you'll see fallouts on TV because that is what people will be talking about. That will all be done behind closed doors and before the tournament starts.”
