Not just Nwaneri & Porter: Arteta must unleash Arsenal’s incredible 17 y/o

After an incredibly tough month of fixtures that saw Arsenal take on Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta and Manchester City, all away from home, the Gunners are now faced with what should be an altogether more straightforward task: a League Cup home tie against Bolton Wanderers.

Now, Mikel Arteta will undoubtedly approach the match with the same level of respect he does for every game, but due to the opposition’s level, he must use it as an opportunity to rest a number of his players who ran themselves into the ground on Sunday evening.

Fortunately, it looks like he will, as 16-year-old goalkeeper Jack Porter, who became the youngest keeper in Champions League history when he made the bench against Atalanta on Thursday, is set to start. The team should also include the sensational Ethan Nwaneri and another of the Gunners’ most promising youngsters, who made quite an entrance on Sunday.

Why Nwaneri should start

So, there are a couple of reasons why Arteta should look to hand Nwaneri his first competitive start for Arsenal this evening, and the first is simply down to necessity.

Martin Odegaard is still out with the ankle injury he picked up on international duty, Leandro Trossard is suspended due to his second yellow card against City on the weekend, and the player who probably would have stepped in last season, Fabio Vieira, is currently on loan with previous club Porto.

Moreover, Kai Havertz will either start up top or, more likely, be rested, meaning the manager has only one option: hand the sensationally gifted 17-year-old his full debut for the club.

That said, the second reason is that, regardless of the squad situation, the Enfield-born gem would be deserving of a start purely off the back of his form for the youth sides, his cameo against Spurs and the displays he put in during preseason.

For example, the “true goalscorer”, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has racked up a seriously impressive haul of 27 goals and ten assists in just 52 appearances for the club’s various youth sides, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.40 games, primarily from attacking midfield.

Moreover, when he came off the bench towards the end of the North London Derby, he looked utterly unfazed by the magnitude of the game and the intensity of the rivalry, which suggests that he’d be completely fine starting a home game against third-tier opposition, even alongside another Hale End graduate.

Why Myles Lewis-Skelly should start

Yes, while Arsenal are blessed with an abundance of talented youth players, as the fans saw during the preseason tour, the one who should be guaranteed a place in the starting lineup tonight is 17-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly.

If the Islington-born gem is in the XI this evening, then it’ll come as no surprise to the fans that watched Sunday’s clash with City, as when Jurrien Timber went down with cramp in the 92nd minute, instead of moving Declan Rice into the backline and throwing on Jorginho for some more big game experience, he turned to the Hale End graduate and threw him into the deep end.

Moreover, the Spaniard did so despite the exciting prospect already picking up a yellow card on the sideline for giving instructions to David Raya and then getting into an argument with Erling Haaland, which just shows that even at his age, the “unbelievable” gem as dubbed by podcaster Will Balsam, isn’t phased by anything.

However, it’s not just his incredible mentality and willingness to throw himself into intense situations that warrant his inclusion from the start tonight; it’s also his technical ability and positional versatility.

For example, while he played in central and defensive midfield roles in the academy, driving forward with the ball with purpose (video below), Arteta has primarily used him as cover for left-back, which is likely where he will start tonight with both Timber and Riccardo Calafiori coming off on Sunday.

Ultimately, while it’s a big step-up for the pair of them, Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly should be handed their full Arsenal debut this evening alongside Porter, and if they can keep up the form they have shown in their cameos, the fans will be in for a treat.

Arteta must axe Martinelli and start "unbelievable" Arsenal ace instead

The sensational star needs game time.

Uncertainty over contracts for India Women as they prepare for England tour

The squad hasn’t been named yet, but players have been asked to assemble in Mumbai on May 18

India Women players will follow a two-week quarantine in Mumbai before heading to the UK•BCCI

The India Women players are without central contracts from September 30, 2020 and aren’t sure if they will have signed new annual retainers by the time they board their flight to the UK on June 2 for a tour comprising one Test (their first in nearly seven years), three ODIs and three T20Is.A BCCI functionary told ESPNcricinfo that the matter was wholly being dealt by secretary Jay Shah’s office. *The squads were announced on Friday night, less than five days before the players are likely to assemble in Mumbai on May 18. ESPNcricinfo understands that the players will follow a two-week quarantine, like their male counterparts, before the entire contingent flies to the UK via a charter flight. The only cricket the women players have played since their runners-up finish at the T20 World Cup in March last year has been the four-match Women’s T20 Challenge in Sharjah in November and two limited-overs series at home against South Africa, which they lost, earlier this year. Those defeats led to scrutiny on WV Raman’s position as head coach, and on Thursday, he was replaced by Ramesh Powar.Related

As per their previous contracts, the women’s retainers, in comparison, were awarded across three categories: Grade A: 50 lakhs, Grade B: 30 lakhs and Grade C: 10 lakhs. In all, 22 women’s players were awarded annual retainers in 2020, with Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur and Poonam Yadav part of the highest bracket. The likes of Pulisic and McKennie have helped to raise the profile of American players a long way outside of their homeland. International colleagues such as Gio Reyna, Tim Weah, Folarin Balogun, Malik Tillman and Brenden Aaronson have been doing likewise as they compete in Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands and England.

There are, however, considered to be barriers that stars from the United States are yet to break down. The USMNT are, despite the obvious potential in a squad that is now coached by ex-Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino, yet to win over supporters outside of North America.

WHAT PULISIC SAID

Pulisic and McKennie believe that is working against them, with the former – who has been catching the eye in Serie A with AC Milan – saying when quizzed about supposed bias on the new documentary from that focuses on Pulisic: “It pisses me off in a way. If it comes down to me or them and it’s a 50/50 for the call from the coach who’s going to play, or something like that, I think it exists.”

Juventus midfielder McKennie added: “There's definitely a bias. It’s just something that you get used to. I go through it most of the time whenever I’m at Juventus. 'Everton deserved more' – Ruben Amorim refuses to get carried away in 'honest' assessment of thumping Man Utd win as he addresses Champions League chances

Two goals apiece from Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee inspired United to a 4-0 victory over the Toffees in what was Amorim's first Premier League home game at Old Trafford. The result pushes United up to 19 points, trailing Brighton by four in the race for the coveted Champions League spots.

When asked about Manchester United's prospects of securing a top-four finish, Amorim offered a measured response.

“I will be judged [on] the place that we finish. If I said no you will say that I cannot be a Manchester United manager,” said the 39-year-old to reporters. “I want to be honest with our fans – so let’s focus on the performance, not the results. Let’s focus just on the next game and look at the performance. Thursday [against Bodø/Glimt] it was 3-2, but I think we deserved more. Today was 4-0 – but I think Everton deserved [more]. So let’s focus on the performance.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Zirkzee had faced criticism for a slow start to his United career. And eyebrows were raised when Amorim decided to give him a start over Rasmus Hojlund, who had scored twice in their recent Europa League clash against Bodo/Glimt.

“It would have been really hard for Rasmus to fight with the two centre-backs of Everton so we tried to push them to a position they are not so comfortable with,” he explained. “Josh did a great job, scored two goals which is always important for the confidence, and more important than that is the performance and how he fought in every situation. It was a good day for him and our team.”

IPL Governing Council yet to meet and finalise dates

Even as teams start to prepare for the tournament, the IPL has not yet announced the dates as well as the venue for the event. Concerned officials have pointed out that a final decision is set to be taken at an IPL Governing Council meeting, but no date for that has been fixed yet.Related

It is understood the meeting is likely to take place around the closing days of the fourth and final Test of the England series, which started in Ahmedabad on March 4. However, none of the BCCI’s top brass as well as IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel have spoken out in public on details of the tournamentAlthough the IPL has chalked out a window for the tournament, the key hurdle for the BCCI has been finalising the venues. Having made up its mind to conduct the tournament in India after successfully organising domestic limited-overs tournaments as well as the ongoing England series, the BCCI had originally earmarked Mumbai along with Pune and Ahmedabad as the venues to conduct the 2021 edition. However, the number of rising Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, where the state government has imposed fresh restrictions including no crowds, forced the IPL to mobilise an alternative plan. That involves conducting the tournament at multiple cities with Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad being put on the potential shortlist. One reason behind the delay is that the IPL was waiting for the Election Commission of India to announce the poll dates of several states including West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, and if it would clash with the tournament. While Tamil Nadu elections are scheduled for April 7, the polls would be conducted in multiple phases in West Bengal between late March and April 29 with results out on May 4.

Man Utd now just one step away from third summer signing after deal agreed

Manchester United are closing in on their third signing of the summer as they look to bolster their squad following a disappointing 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Manchester United transfer news

Erik ten Hag's side have already made two signings this summer, with Joshua Zirkzee arriving from Bologna in a deal worth £34m while centre-back Leny Yoro was signed from French side Lille in a £52m move, with the Red Devils beating Liverpool and Real Madrid to the teenage sensation.

But they may be forced to wait for his competitive debut after the defender limped out of their pre-season defeat to Arsenal after just half an hour of action.

Leny Yoro for Man Utd.

After the game, Ten Hag admitted it is now just a waiting game to find out the extent of the issue: "Of course, it is too short [to know about their injuries], and we have to wait over 24 hours, then we will hopefully know more. We were careful, especially with Leny [Yoro], as he only did 50 per cent of the [training] sessions. He has to come up, but let's be positive and see what comes out."

Should the news be bad, it may accelerate Manchester United's chase of another centre-back, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt both under consideration previously. But some of the focus at present is on departures, especially in midfield where Scott McTominay is subject of interest from Fulham and Casemiro has had previous suitors in Saudi Arabia.

Question marks also remain over Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen, who have both been linked with departures in recent months. And another departure will be needed to secure United's third signing.

Third signing held up by one issue

Now, it has been reported that United have got everything ready to complete their third signing of the summer, in the shape of Bayern Munich defender Noussair Mazraoui.

The 28-cap Moroccan was on the verge of joining West Ham last week, only for the move to collapse and Manchester United to swoop in for his services.

He spent time with Ten Hag when the pair were together at Ajax, and is now set to reunite with the Dutchman at the Theatre of Dreams. As per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the defender has "agreed personal terms" with United and "wants the move", while The Guardian claim that a fee has been agreed for "between £15m and £20m" with Bayern Munich.

However, any deal relies on the departure of incumbent right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is thought to have turned down West Ham United in favour of a move abroad, with Serie A a potential destination for the defender.

It remains to be seen whether that interest formulates, and his lack of urgency to depart Old Trafford could see any potential deal for Mazraoui drag on for much of the remainder of the transfer window.

Newcastle planning to sign international striker to help Alexander Isak

With fresh forward players at the top of Newcastle United's shopping list this summer, one of the Magpies' higher ups has made an interesting claim about their top target during the window.

Toon target new attacking talents this summer

The main story developing on Tyneside this summer is Newcastle's ongoing hunt for new attacking players. With Callum Wilson linked with an exit from the club and Miguel Almiron expected to be replaced, the Magpies are eager to bolster Eddie Howe's forward line.

Imagine him & Gordon: Newcastle battling PL giants for "monster" signing

He has a whole host of Premier League sides after him this summer.

ByEthan Lamb Jul 17, 2024

One name who has been linked with a move to the Magpies in recent weeks is Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The English striker is the subject of interest from numerous clubs with Newcastle reported to have recently put in a fresh bid for the player.

Another player who has been doing the rounds at St James' Park is Italian talent Wilfried Gnonto. The winger looks almost certain to be playing his football away from Leeds United next year with the Toon set to compete with Everton to secure his services.

Wilfried Gnonto

With Newcastle clearly focused on bringing in new forward players, the Magpies' chief has revealed the exact kind of player that they are looking for this summer.

Journalist drops hints about the Magpies' mystery target

As reported by iNews' Mark Douglas, a recent press sit-down with Darren Eales saw Newcastle's CEO drop some interesting information about the Magpies' transfer strategy this summer.

Since joining Newcastle in July 2022, Eales has played a key role in the Toon's transfer business over the last couple of seasons alongside former sporting director, Dan Ashworth. Speaking at Newcastle's pre-season briefing in Herzogenaurach Germany, Eales said that they plan to "attack" the window and have a "big season".

Elaborating on Eales' plans, Douglas states that: "There are exciting targets being monitored. An international forward is one of those being considered for a vacancy for a dynamic, versatile striker to supplement the lethal Isak".

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak

After finding the back of the net on 21 occasions in the league last season, there is a clear reason why Newcastle are looking to build around Alexander Isak next season. Despite missing 8 league games through injury last season, the Swedish striker still ranked as one of the Toon's top players on the attacking front.

With the profile of Newcastle's mystery target now known, it can shed some further light on a couple of the targets most recently linked with moves to the club.

Whilst it is cited that the club are specifically looking for a striker, a forward in the mould of Calvert-Lewin would not fit Eales' criteria of dynamic and versatile. Similarly, the previously mentioned Gnonto is too much of a wide man to be the player that the Magpies' CEO is talking about, so perhaps it could be a more versatile option who can fit in along the front three.

One player touted for a move to Tyneside is West Ham and England star Jarrod Bowen. With 20 goals and 10 assists in all competitions last campaign, the 27-year-old certainly fits the bill to be the Toons' target. Despite being a right winger by trade, Bowen spent much of last season playing as a striker as a result of Michail Antonio's injury issues.

Another player that could be on Eales' mind is Bayern Munich's Serge Gnabry. Much like Bowen, the German is a natural winger who is more than comfortable drifitng central when needed.

With Newcastle wanting someone to support Isak rather than replace him, a winger that can play through the middle may be the best option for the Toon as they continue to play coy about their mystery man.
