Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat changes nothing about their chances for success

It’s the petty child inside that screams ‘well, I never wanted it anyway’ when faced with rejection. If such a petty child were an Arsenal fan, he might be screaming the same thing right now.

As Arsene Wenger’s weakened side succumbed to an FA Cup third round defeat for the first time in the manager’s long reign at the club, and against a struggling, managerless Championship side to boot, it’s hard to see too many bright points.

With the Premier League’s top six far consolidating their power as English football becomes about the 1% versus the rest, trophies will be at a premium for the next few seasons. With the Premier League title all but heading to Manchester, the others have to fight over the League Cup and the FA Cup as something of an inadequate alternative. European glory would sate the hunger, but that’s an even riskier bet. For Arsenal, they don’t even find themselves at the top table on the continent, but could well find themselves under severe pressure to land the second-tier trophy just to return to the top one next season.

Already five points behind Liverpool who are currently in fourth, the Gunners aren’t in an enviable position. But with the club having stagnated over the last few years – and with frustration only getting worse year after year – you have to wonder just what difference it makes if Arsenal are out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.

Winning the competition three years out of four doesn’t appear to have granted Arsene Wenger much good felicity in the last few seasons. Victory at Wembley last season, as with the two other triumphs in recent times, has essentially been seen as a salvage operation on an otherwise disappointing season. If Tottenham or Liverpool were to win the FA Cup this year, for example, it might be seen as a step in the right direction. For Arsenal, it would be taken as yet more evidence that the club is stagnating, suffering the same failures – and the same tedious successes – year after year.

That’s unfair to the FA Cup, and probably even demeaning to the competition that Arsene Wenger’s side lifted only just six months ago. But it’s clear that if three in four didn’t scratch the itch that Arsenal have had since last winning the league in 2004, then even four in five is unlikely to do it, either.

Instead, Wenger is in a similar position to one in which Jose Mourinho found himself last season.

Still alive in the EFL Cup, the Gunners have the chance to win a trophy to give their floundering season a timely kick-start in February with another Wembley victory. That won’t be easy: Chelsea are the opponents in Wednesday night’s semi-final first leg, whilst the all-conquering Manchester City will likely lie in wait for the final.

If they were to win that, the Europa League would also present the opportunity not just to win another trophy, but also to gain entry to next season’s Champions League. Mourinho’s United finished sixth last season, which is where Wenger’s Gunners currently sit. Indeed, win the League Cup and Europa League and Wenger could even instruct his celebrating players to give three-fingered salutes to the TV cameras proclaiming their Community Shield victory as the first leg in an historic treble.

There are fundamental differences between where Manchester United were this time last season and where Arsenal were, though. Mourinho had just taken over his Red Devils’ side, who were beginning to improve under his management. They were also much further into the Europa League as a competition before sacking off the league in order to win it. And in the EFL Cup, they faced Hull City in the semi-final before Southampton in the final.

But there are also similarities. Arsenal are a club who shouldn’t be scrambling for a backdoor into the Champions League, just as United shouldn’t be either. And these days there is a very fine line between a season we consider a success and one we think of as a failure. Had United lost the final of the Europa League, come sixth, and won only the EFL Cup, that would have been seen as a failure. It all came down to Europe, and the Champions League qualification.

Perhaps that’s what makes the FA Cup, the League, and even the League Cup (though winning it would surely be an achievement) secondary to the Europa League for the Gunners this season. Because where they are at the moment – already five points off a Champions League spot – means only winning in Europe looks likely to see Arsenal back in the Champions League again next season.

Defeat in the FA Cup means no change whatsoever for Arsenal’s success or failure this season. Just as the last four years have all been seen as failures despite winning the competition three times. This year, success will be measured by other competitions – and in two of them, Wenger’s side are still alive.

In Focus: Windass has potential but big fee will be hard for Rangers to turn down

As reported by The Daily Record, Rangers attacker Josh Windass is a target for English Championship side Leeds United this January.

What’s the story?

Windass has shown good progress this season at the Light Blues, being one of their stand-out performers in the first half of the campaign. With transfer activity at Ibrox high this January, it could mean that former regulars find themselves on the fringes of Graeme Murty’s side after the winter break.

Murty has already added the likes of Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings to his squad, who both play in positions that Windass has been deployed in so far this season.

The Daily Record report that Leeds United are set to test their resolve to hold on to the attacker with an offer than improves on the £500,000 bid that Rangers rejected from Preston North End earlier this month.

Should they sell?

Windass arrived in Glasgow from League Two side Accrington Stanley with a remit to score and provide goals, something he managed to do consistently for his former club.

In his debut season at Ibrox though, the player struggled, failing to score a single goal in the Scottish Premiership. This term there’s been a definite improvement with six goals and five assists in 20 top flight appearances.

That’s an attacking contribution that Rangers should get rid of lightly, but with the arrival of Murphy and Cummings, who both have the potential to provide greater numbers than that, they also shouldn’t dismiss bids out of hand.

A seven-figure fee for the player would be fair compensation and perhaps one that would be difficult to turn down, as popular as Windass is with supporters.

Rangers fans loved Sean Goss’ debut against Aberdeen

Rangers moved into second place in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night, defeating rivals Aberdeen at Ibrox in a 2-0 scoreline.

The Light Blues knew victory would see them leapfrog the Dons in the table and the result never looked in doubt as the side returned to action after the mid-season break.

Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier were the goal heroes, netting in each half to secure all three points on a night that Graeme Murty chose to hand a debut to a number of new signings.

Russell Martin, Jamie Murphy and Sean Goss all made their competitive debuts for the club after a busy start to the January transfer window, with Jason Cummings also coming off the bench in the second half.

Fans were delighted with the performance of Sean Goss in particular, believing he had a big influence on the match in the heart of the Rangers midfield. They’re even already talking about signing him permanently when his loan from Queens Park Rangers expires.

Aston Villa fans react to Birmingham tweet ahead of Second City Derby

In one of the most anticipated games of the calendar year, Sunday will see Aston Villa take on fierce rivals Birmingham City in the second city derby.

While the Villains have had an impressive start to 2018 and are sitting pretty in third place in the Championship table, cross-town rivals Birmingham are struggling at the bottom end of the league, currently occupying 19th place.

In the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign, the two teams played out a goalless draw. This may not be the case on Sunday, with both teams desperate to claim three vital points.

Ahead of the Sunday’s game, Birmingham City’s official twitter account uploaded a post, using the famous television show Peaky Blinders, set in Small Heath, the location of St. Andrew’s, to generate excitement among the fans…

After seeing the tweet, Aston Villa fans took to social media to mock their arch rivals…

Tottenham fans want club to extend Erik Lamela contract

It has been a pretty good week for Tottenham. A comfortable victory in the North London Derby last Saturday was followed up with a mightily impressive draw against Juventus in the Champions League.

Now, Mauricio Pochettino’s men look to have found top gear and are still competing on a number of fronts, in the hope that this season will finally be the one that ends in silverware.

Now, according to ESPN, Spurs are considering extending the contract of one of their in-form players – Erik Lamela.

The Argentine, who is valued at £22.5million by Transfermarkt, has been superb since returning from an injury that saw him sidelined for a year.

His current contract runs out in 2019, but Spurs have the option of the extending his stay at the club by a further 12 months; something that the Tottenham hierarchy are reportedly debating at the moment.

Southampton fans want Slavisa Jokanovic to replace Mauricio Pellegrino

According to reports in The Mirror on Monday, Southampton are considering Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic as a potential replacement for Mauricio Pellegrino who looks set to get the sack this summer, and Saints fans are backing a potential move for the 49-year-old.

The Mirror reports that the unpopular Pellegrino will get the boot whether the south coast outfit stay up or suffer relegation to the Championship, with the club currently lying just one point above the drop zone ahead of their huge clash against 16th-placed Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Cottagers extended their unbeaten run to 14 Championship matches and maintained their bid for automatic promotion to the Premier League as they beat Sheffield United 3-0 at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night, with the Serbian boss even receiving admiring glances from West Ham fans.

Southampton supporters have been quick to have their say on the possibility of Jokanovic replacing Pellegrino via social media, and while one said “get in my club Slavisa Jokanovic”, another simply said “Jokanovic in”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Aston Villa fans desperate for Grealish return

A calf problem has seen influential midfielder Jack Grealish miss Aston Villa’s last three matches in the Championship.

Indeed, the 22-year-old, who is valued at £4.5m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has not represented Steve Bruce’s side since the 2-0 win over Birmingham City on February 11.

Villa have lost to Fulham, drawn with Preston North End and beaten Sheffield Wednesday in the absence of a player that has one goal and six assists to his name this season.

It is thought that Grealish has a chance of being fit for Villa’s Championship clash against Queens Park Rangers this weekend, and the club’s supporters are desperate for that to be the case.

Villa are currently third in the Championship – four points behind second-placed Cardiff City as the battle for automatic promotion hots up. Derby County, meanwhile, are just three points off Villa in fourth position.

A selection of the Twitter reaction to Grealish’s potential return can be seen below:

Some Manchester United fans are growing impatient with Anthony Martial

Manchester United will play Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-finals after progressing against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday night.

After exiting the UEFA Champions League mid-week, the pressure was on Jose Mourinho’s outfit to deliver a victory and they did just that thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.

Given the FA Cup represents their best chance of a trophy this season, it was a huge win for the Red Devils and while fans were pleased to progress, not every player got pass marks.

Some supporters took issue with the display from Anthony Martial who was largely ineffective across the 90 minutes.

The Frenchman’s only direct goal contribution over the last eight matches has been a solitary assist and it’s clear that United are currently failing to get the best out of him.

While many are backing the player over Mourinho, believing the manager is to blame, plenty are also growing impatient with his performances and took to Twitter to share their thoughts…

Three reasons Southampton must forget Joe Allen and sign Kurt Zouma instead

New Southampton manager Mark Hughes is reportedly lining up a summer move for Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen.

Even though the Welshman only signed a contract until the end of the season when he replaced Mauricio Pellegrino last week, it seems as though he is already putting plans in place for next term if the club stay in the Premier League and if his stay at St Mary’s is extended.

Both situations are certainly still up in the air despite the fact the 54-year-old led the club to the semi-finals of the FA Cup in his first match in charge, with the club slipping into the top flight relegation zone following Crystal Palace’s win against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The south coast outfit now lie two points from safety and one above 19th-placed Stoke, for whom Allen has been a key performer since he signed for the Potters from Liverpool in 2016.

Hughes was the man that brought the Welshman to the Britannia Stadium, while he also sealed a season-long loan deal for Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma, rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, last summer.

The Frenchman has been able to play regularly for the Staffordshire-based club after his first-team appearances were limited at Stamford Bridge following a long spell on the sidelines because of injury, and he may well be available either on loan or permanently this summer.

Here are three reasons Southampton must forget Allen and sign the 23-year-old instead…

If Southampton do survive and keep their Premier League spot this season, there would certainly be a big argument against them needing to sign the 28-year-old Allen for the following campaign.

The south coast outfit already have plenty of options in the middle of the park with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oriol Romeu, Steven Davis, Mario Lemina and James Ward-Prowse – as well as Harrison Reed when he comes back from his loan spell with Norwich City – and it would be difficult to find a spot for the Wales international.

While he could play a bit further forward in a 4-2-3-1 system, Saints fans will perhaps be hoping for a more fruitful central attacking midfielder than one that has two goals and six assists in 29 Premier League appearances for Stoke this season.

While Wesley Hoedt and Jack Stephens have stepped up well as the first-choice central defensive partnership in recent months and are both good with the ball at their feet, they do often struggle from a physical point of view and winning aerial duels, with Saints fans wanting the former to be dropped after the loss to Liverpool last month.

While both looked far more comfortable playing alongside the dominant Virgil van Dijk before he departed for Liverpool in January, it hasn’t been the same when they have been deployed together and you get the feeling that it will be an area that Hughes will target for improvement should be stay on at St Mary’s.

Considering he brought him to Stoke last summer, the 54-year-old will know all about Zouma and the qualities he brings – one of which is his strength and aerial ability.

Chelsea sent the Frenchman out on a season-long loan deal last summer when he was finding first-team opportunities hard to come by as he looked to get back to his best following a serious knee injury, and he could easily find that he is surplus to requirements this summer.

With Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta all set to be at the club next season – and Gary Cahill and David Luiz potentially too – the Blues have plenty of options there, including youngster Ethan Ampadu, while they have also been heavily linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, too.

Zouma may well find himself down the pecking order on his return to Stamford Bridge, and a permanent move away could be on the cards if he is to play regularly, with Hughes sure to be interested.

Do you agree, Saints fans? Let us know below.

Aubameyang shows clinical edge to hand Arsenal flattering result

Arsenal’s clash with Stoke was a sleepy encounter, played out in front of a far-from-full and apathetic Emirates crowd and it certainly wasn’t a 3-0 game.

Paul Lambert’s Potters did not play with the urgency of a side looking to avoid relegation or sensing that their hosts have more than one eye on the Europa League, on which the success of their season realistically rests on.

Nevertheless, the scoreline ended up 3-0 and January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang  – who has 56 caps for Gabon – was the man who netted the first two goals, showing Champions League class and a clinical edge to take the game away from the visitors.

His game was about more than goals but four shots, three on target and two goals are good numbers for a man who needs to start hitting the back of the net on a regular basis to please the Gunners fans.

Two dribbles and one key pass show that the frontman is more than just a poacher and that is further good news for Arsene Wenger, who demands that his forwards get involved in all elements of the play.

Aubameyang is cup-tied for the Europa League but if his team-mates do manage to qualify for next season’s Champions League via that route, on this form he will be a valuable, clinical weapon.
