West Ham defender Pablo Zabaleta had a day to forget against Allan Saint-Maximin

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Manuel Pellegrini opted to start Pablo Zabaleta for West Ham United’s match with Newcastle United, meaning the 34-year-old was directly up against Allan Saint-Maximin.

The decision seemed a little bit strange at the time due to the skillsets of the two players, especially when it is considered that Ryan Fredericks was on the bench, and the events of Zabaleta’s 72 minutes on the pitch didn’t bring much clarity to the decision.

Saint-Maximin’s biggest strength is his dribbling, as per WhoScored, for which he utilises his speed, power and technical ability to drive at defenders, something Pablo Zabaleta struggled to deal with.

This can be seen by the fact that the Argentinian didn’t even attempt a tackle, while Saint-Maximin went on to make 5 dribbles throughout the game.

Anybody who watched the game would have seen the Frenchman twice sprinting away from the right-back, with Felipe Anderson being forced to come in and make defensive interventions, which the speed he possesses allowed him to do.

There was also an incident later in the game in which the 22-year-old cut inside and got a shot off unopposed, with Zabaleta stepping off, perhaps wary of getting taken on down the outside.

Zabaleta’s game eventually came to an end when he was substituted off for Fredericks in the 72nd minute with his side 3-0 down.

This was the second game in a row Fredericks started on the bench but, due to the speed and dynamism of Saint-Maximin, the decision was much more perplexing against the Magpies than it was against the Blades.

In order to prevent a similar future mismatch, Pellegrini should consider the speed of his right-back’s opposite number before sending Zabaleta to the slaughter.

Leeds United could be left with few defensive options next season and Marcelo Bielsa should be worried

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds United could be left with very few numbers in defence with some top-name players looking likely to depart at the end of the season, regardless of whether or not Premier League status is achieved.

On the chalkboard

The Whites are currently the best defensive team in the Championship, letting in just seven goals so far this term. As a result, the likes of Ben White and Liam Cooper have established themselves as some of the league’s best, with White winning the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month award back in August.

However, White will be returning to Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of the campaign, whilst experienced and versatile defender Gaetano Berardi will be out of contact at the same time. This will leave just Cooper as the only senior out-and-out central defender, with Kalvin Phillips preferred in midfield and Luke Ayling needed at right-back.

With White having such a phenomenal season by averaging a rating of 7.33, it is tough to see Leeds luring him from Brighton permanently, especially considering the club failed to put in an option to buy on the loan deal.

Leeds’ decision not to recruit any more central defenders is already looking questionable with Cooper out injured, which leaves Marcelo Bielsa one defensive injury or suspension away from disaster. Luckily, Berardi’s red card was rescinded last week and the club now still has two fit and ready centre-backs available.

Bielsa playing a dangerous game

If there is any league in European football in which you need to have strength in depth, it’s the Championship. The fiercely and unpredictable competition spans 46 games and still requires teams to battle on the FA Cup and EFL Cup fronts as well.

To survive in the second tier and to even consider yourself a contender for promotion, club’s must have strong numbers across the entire field. Last season, Championship winners Norwich City had up to five centre-backs compared to Leeds’ three right now, and the Canaries purchased the likes of Rocky Bushiri upon promotion to the top-flight to further add to their defensive stability.

Should the Whites get promoted, although they will play eight fewer games in the Premier League, they will require experience and quality more than ever to avoid the immediate return to the division below. Time will tell if Berardi signs on, but with White all but guaranteed to return to Brighton, Bielsa needs to seriously consider delving into the market not just in the summer, but perhaps in January as well.

The Argentine is going to need potentially another three additions to his backline, should Berardi and White leave. If not, the Leeds boss will be playing a very dangerous game.

Birmingham fans divided over how their team played against Blackburn

That’s how you bounce back.

Birmingham City got back to winning ways as they defeated Blackburn Rovers 1-0 on Tuesday night, with the winning goal coming from a rather unusual source, right-back Maxime Colin.

Although the goal was so intricately worked that it wouldn’t have looked out of place if it had been scored by a team managed by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

So how did Birmingham fans react to what wasn’t necessarily a vital three points, but certainly a welcome one?

Well, it looks as if the performance wasn’t enough to please every single member of the St Andrew’s faithful.

There were a couple of people who were pleased with how things played out, taking the opportunity to praise the manager for delivering an entertaining style of play.

A second strike wouldn’t have gone amiss, not just because it would have been better for their goal difference, but because it would have given fans a less stressful last couple of minutes.

But at the end of the day, three points is three points and that’s all you can really ask for.

Here’s how they reacted to the result.

However, it looks as if some people were left disappointed that they only managed to get the one goal.

Leicester City need to be considered as top four contenders, John Motson suggests

Leicester City have made an impressive start to the season under Brendan Rodgers and are currently sitting pretty in third place in the Premier League. You’d be forgiven for drawing parallels between the club’s last taste of glory, with a number of the “top†sides, excluding of course Liverpool and Manchester City, faltering in their own attempts to secure European football.Watch Leicester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Indeed, Manchester United already look out of the running, having recently dropped into tenth place, Arsenal are a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang injury away from crumbling themselves, Tottenham are still suffering from their Champions League hangover and Chelsea, albeit putting in some impressive performances along the way, are undergoing their own period of transition.

With one of the most exciting young teams in the league including Wilfried Ndidi, James Maddison, Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans, Harvey Barnes, and veteran Jamie Vardy (having a party), the Foxes are primed for success.

And who better to cement that sentiment than commentating celestial John Motson, who has made a very bold claim about Leicester’s credentials for European qualification…

Who knew Leicester landing a spot in the top four could sound so good?

Arsenal legend Wenger is once again mugged off by Mourinho in TV advert

Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger had one of the greatest rivalries in Premier League history. With both managers currently out of a job you’d have thought that this feud would have been put to bed, but Mourinho couldn’t help but have a dig at Wenger as he appeared in an advert this week.Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Indeed, the Portuguese manager starred in Paddy Power’s latest advert, and there were a few sly digs at Wenger in there that many won’t have spotted on first viewing.

Towards the end of the attached video you’ll see that the advert included some sneaky digs at the former Arsenal manager with Mourinho’s selection of books.

One of Mourinho’s novels was called ‘The Voyeur’, alluding to the fact that the former United boss infamously used that term to describeÂthe Frenchman a back in 2005.

Another title that sits in his bookcase is ‘Le Specialiste en Failure’. No prizes for guessing what that translates to – as it is, of course, a cheeky nod to Mourinho’s incredible insult aimed at Wenger back in 2014.

Newcastle fans comment on Fabian Schar’s long-range goal

[ad_pod ]

Fabian Schar scored an absolute stunner in Newcastle United’s 2-0 win over Burnley in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Indeed, the centre-back’s long-range effort sent the Magpies ahead on the night, before Sean Longstaff made it two in the 38th minute.

It was another good night for Newcastle, who are showing good form at a vital stage of the campaign.

A number of the club’s supporters took to social media to comment on Schar’s strike as not many could believe what had happened.

Signed to stop the opposition from scoring, the defender took matters into his own hands against a Burnley team who entered the match full of confidence due to their own run of impressive form.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

The Switzerland international’s strike was the story of the match and a lot of Newcastle fans were keen to lavish praise on the 2018 arrival from Deportivo La Coruna.

Southampton’s bold move may have solved a huge headache

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Attacking players win you games, right?

One may argue that you can never have too many quick-thinking forwards capable of that moment of brilliance, the flash that can turn one point into three.

However, having such an embarrassment of riches prompts the question: How can they all fit into the side and get a sufficient amount of game time?

In Southampton’s case, Ralph Hasenhuttl has this same dilemma on his hands.

The former RB Leipzig boss doesn’t necessarily have Lionel Messi, Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann and Luis Suarez at his disposal, but he still has plenty of game-changing attackers who can’t quite all fit in the same XI.

Nathan Redmond, Danny Ings, Che Adams, Sofiane Boufal, Moussa Djenepo and Michael Obafemi.

Six forwards. Just three attacking positions up for grabs – if Hasenhuttl continues with his 3-4-2-1 system which he used last time out against Sheffield United, that is.

It should be mentioned that James Ward-Prowse also took up one of these positions against the Blades, so you could argue that seven players are vying for three positions – however, a bold move from Hasenhuttl looks to have helped solve this huge selection headache somewhat.

Against Chris Wilder’s side, the Austrian boss deployed £15m summer signing Moussa Djenepo at the unnatural position of left wing-back – the Mali international is commonly a left-sided forward.

Whilst some at Southampton may have been scared to see the 21-year-old – making just his fourth appearance in English football – play as part of the backline, Djenepo didn’t let them down.

In fact, he performed brilliantly.

Before being moved further forward later on in the game, the former Standard Liege man registered two tackles, one interception and two clearances, proving to be a capable pair of hands in the new role.

Upon being moved further forward, he then performed a bit of magic to sidestep Oliver Norwood, before dropping a shoulder and slotting home into the bottom corner.

When asked about the tactical decision, Hasenhuttl said: “I tried to have a right-footer on the left side to come inside and create and go into the red zone.

“Moussa showed against Liverpool in the last ten minutes that he can play this position in an offensive way but it was sure a risk, but I wanted to take this risk.”

Although Djenepo won’t be involved against Bournemouth on Friday night due to injury, that self-proclaimed risk may have just solved a huge selection problem for Hasenhuttl in the long-term, especially when all his options are fit.

Let’s just try to sum up how tough this situation is.

In Redmond, the Saints have a man who was their main attacking outlet last term with six goals and four assists to his name, so it would be a questionable decision to drop him.

Boufal has steadily become a starter once again since returning from his loan spell at Celta Vigo, with Hasenhuttl stating how important the Moroccan’s ability to carry the ball up the field is after the 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Elsewhere, Adams – a £15m signing from Birmingham – has got himself into promising positions despite not scoring. it would be a huge call to drop him so soon into his Saints career – especially given the price tag he commanded.

Ings, a striker of real pedigree having turned out for Liverpool and England, commanded a £20m fee this summer and would certainly feel hard done by if he was dropped for a long period of time – the former Burnley man also hit seven goals last season.

Obafemi is an up-and-coming youngster who has already found the net once this term, whereas Ward-Prowse has worn the armband for the club, demonstrating how key he is at St Mary’s.

Every player involved in this selection headache – perhaps excluding Obafemi given his inexperience – has some sort of case to start.

However, by finding Djenepo a spot at left wing-back and discovering that the Malian is a capable option there, Hasenhuttl has freed up more space in attack, thus reducing the dilemma on his hands.

Ironically, it solves a problem at left-back too. With Ryan Bertrand injured and apparently out of favour – Hasenhuttl said he would’ve dropped the occasional England man regardless – Kevin Danso filled in there against Manchester United only to be sent off in the second half.

Djenepo represents a solution there as well, an alternative for the left side of the St. Mary’s defence, albeit as a wing-back rather than a traditional No.3.

The summer signing is already ticking a lot of boxes for the Saints boss, albeit perhaps not in the way he expected when he arrived on the south coast, and much of it owes to Hasenhuttl’s willingness to take a tactical gamble away from home.

Everton target Tetê signs for Lyon

Everton must consider their pursuit of Brazilian forward Tete despite a major transfer development on Thursday afternoon.

What’s the news?

French Ligue 1 side Lyon have completed a move for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Tetê, who has signed on an initial loan, but according to their technical director Vincent Ponsot, they are also looking to sign him permanently.

“Tetê has joined until the end of the season,” announced Ponsot. “We are also working on things over the medium term because we would like him to stay past the end of the season. He’s a top-level recruit for us. I would like to thank his entourage.”

The news comes just a couple days after 90min reported that the Toffees had joined the race for the Brazilian, with Southampton at the time believed to be in driving seat.

However, with the player currently on on loan, there is still hope of a deal being done this summer with a suitor like Everton.

Richarlison heir on the cheap

The club’s financial situation could force them into spending smart in the summer, as well as selling a number of their key players in order to facilitate a much-need rebuild.

With the club currently sitting in 17th in the Premier League standings, they have severely underachieved, and manager Frank Lampard will surely be desperate for mass changes ahead of next season.

Richarlison is one of the players linked with a big-money move away from Goodison Park, however, Tete could be the ideal replacement.

Valued at £18m according to Transfermarkt, the forward had scored nine goals and assisted one more in the Ukrainian top flight, making 17 appearances including 11 from the start before the season ended due to the Russian invasion of the country.

The 22-year-old, who has scored 31 times for Shakhtar, will be available for cheaper in the summer, particularly if the invasion continues, and with Everton struggling financially, a cut-price option is something that Lampard and Farhad Moshiri will love.

Making 0.93 goal contributions per 90 minutes in Ukraine, he has bettered Richarlison’s total considerable, who has managed to make just 0.39 goal contributions per 90 minutes in the Premier League.

Admittedly, the quality of the two leagues are vastly different, but there is no denying his ability – having torn Real Madrid apart almost 18 months ago in Shakhtar’s 3-2 Champions League group stage victory in the 2020/21 season, in which he scored a “stunning” goal as well as setting up another.

Described as “very talented” by scout Jacek Kulig, he could save the Toffees plenty of money on a potential replacement for Richarlison, bringing more skill, pace and direct running that will get the Goodison Park faithful on their feet for the first time in what feels like a very long time.

They will, however, now need to battle hard to rival Lyon for a permanent acquisition in a few months.

Spurs: Romano issues Traore update

Tottenham Hotspur have edged one step closer to sealing Adama Traore before deadline day this month…

What’s the word?

Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano delivered a fresh update on the situation to Twitter over the weekend, where he said:

“Adama Traoré deal not done/fully agreed yet but Tottenham are confident to reach the agreement soon. Negotiations with Wolves will continue in the next hours and days.

“Personal terms already discussed with Adama. Spurs are on it.”

It remains to be seen exactly how much the Spain international will cost the Lilywhites but some reports suggest that it could be in the region of £20m after they had a £15m bid rejected last week.

One step closer

This latest development is sure to leave both manager Antonio Conte and the Hotspur faithful absolutely delighted as it seems as if it’s only a matter of time before Traore becomes a Spurs player.

It’s thought that the Italian head coach does not trust summer signing Emerson Royal at right wing-back and Spurs believe their manager can convert the Wolves star into a solid option in the role, just like he did with Victor Moses at Chelsea.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-thfc-spurs-transfer-rumours-gossip-conte-paratici-levy-updates” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

The 25-year-old possesses the natural speed and strength to thrive in this position and considering his disappointing end product, it really could be the best fit for him and his future.

For instance, this season, Traore has scored just once from 20 league appearances but that’s without factoring in the eye test as he’s often double marked in most outings. That’s because he’s a pacey and strong threat out wide.

He leads the league for average number of successful dribbles per 90 minutes (seven) and that clearly makes him difficult to defend. An average of 1.5 key passes per 90 also suggests that he’s a creative influence, too.

BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand once dubbed him a “machine” who is built like a “powerlifter or a cruiser-weight boxer”, whilst Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has often deemed him to be “unplayable”.

The fact that Spurs have agreed to personal terms is hugely encouraging news and it should have the Lilywhites faithful absolutely buzzing as they close in on the first signing of the Conte era.

AND in other news, Spurs have a “long interest” in £40.5m-rated “beast”, he’s miles better than Sanchez…

Reporter drops Diego Carlos to Spurs news

Taking to Twitter, Italian football journalist Marco Conterio of TUTTOmercatoWEB has made a big Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing defender signings?

One of manager Antonio Conte’s four main transfer priorities at Spurs at the start of January was the signing of a world class, first team-level centre-half to reinforce the Lilywhites backline (Alasdair Gold).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As Tottenham close in on both Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur of Juventus, there has been little progress made in going for a defender this window, although there have been links.

Middlesbrough starlet Djed Spence is apparently a target while the likes of Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger and Serie A star Matthijs de Ligt have been mentioned most recently.

The Latest: Spurs ‘working’ on last gasp Carlos move…

Sharing a big development in their hunt for a capable defensive addition, Conterio claims that managing director Fabio Paratici is now ‘working in these hours’ on a late move for Sevilla star Carlos (Twitter).

He even says that Tottenham have proposed a swap deal, which includes midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, as Paratici aims to snap up the 28-year-old in a surprise late move.

The Verdict: Big…

Signing the Brazil international ace would be a major eleventh hour coup for Conte and the club, not to mention a real statement of intent from the side of Tottenham.

Only in-form Spurs defender Eric Dier has averaged more clearances per 90 (3.7) than Carlos (3.6) over his league appearances this season (WhoScored), potentially highlighting how he would be a solid partner for the Englishman in defence.

Valued at around £40.5m by Transfermarkt, the player has also been called a ‘beast’ by Spanish football expert Domagoj Kostanjšak.

It is a move which could be riddled with difficulties, and perhaps unlikely, but it’s also a display of ambition at the very least.
