Easterns underline their supremacy

A report on the final round of matches in the 2008-09 Faithwear Cup

Cricinfo staff09-Mar-2009Easterns, who had already retained their Faithwear Cup title going into the final round of matches, finished the tournament with an unbeaten record after beating Westerns by 45 runs at Takashinga Sports Club.Easterns turned in one of the best batting performances, opener Bernard Mlambo’s 66 helping them post 270 for 9. Westerns lost two quick wickets, and although Charles Coventry smashed 75 they were always well off the pace.In the other game, Northerns, who had started the competition so promisingly, slumped to a two-wicket defeat by Centrals at Harare Country Club. It was Northerns third successive loss and Centrals’ first win of the competition.Keith Kondo (58) and Cephas Zhuwawo gave Northerns a good start, but they failed to build as expected and it took a ninth-wicket stand of 36 in three overs between Trevor Garwe (42*) and Tinotenda Mutombodzi to help them reach 229 for 8. Centrals looked beaten when they slipped to 111 for 6, but Ryan Chinyengetere’s 72 not-out from 90 balls turned the game on its head.

Batsmen hold the key – Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly, the former India captain, has said the onus will be on the batsmen during India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand

Sourav Ganguly, the former India captain, has said the onus will be on the batsmen during India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand. “The key for India is to bat well,” Ganguly said at a private event in Mumbai.Ganguly led India on their last tour to New Zealand in 2002-03, where they lost 2-0 in the Test series and 5-2 in the ODIs. The batsmen struggled on seamer-friendly tracks then, and Ganguly said they would need to practice hard in the nets in order to adapt quickly to the conditions.”The biggest challenge is the lack of a warm-up before the series starts,” he said. “Also ahead of the Test series some of the Indian batsmen like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman will need to adapt quickly as they will not be playing any practice games.” Dravid told Cricinfo that the 2002-03 tour was “probably an aberration”, but admitted that no practice game was not “an ideal scenario”.India have been successful in the recent past under Mahendra Singh Dhoni but Ganguly felt the performance on overseas tours would determine how good the present side is. “This will be a serious test for Dhoni, and the next two years very important for India’s progress to the No.1 ranking,” he said. “They play a lot of cricket overseas.”Ganguly also said the association of John Wright, the former India coach, with the New Zealand side should not be much of a concern for the Indian side. “John Wright is a coach, and probably contributes 10% to what happens on the field so I don’t perceive him as a threat,” he said. Wright, now a New Zealand national selector, recently said he had “a few ideas” on how to help the home team.Wright and Ganguly forged a successful association during their tenure as India’s coach and captain, and the former captain felt Kirsten was performing a similar role in the present India set-up. “There is a bit of Wright in Kirsten. Gary is doing a wonderful job. He supports the players. The coach needs to be a friend. The moment the coach starts dominating there will be problems in the team,” he said. “The captain is the most important person in the team. I have worked with John Wright and Gary Kirsten and both have the right mindset and have the right way to coach.”

Sunderland in talks over Leon Dajaku deal

Sunderland have entered into talks regarding a deal to bring Leon Dajaku to the Stadium of Light.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Northern Echo, who claim that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has opened negotiations with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich regarding a last-minute deal for the 20-year-old support striker.

The report continues by stating that Lee Johnson is thought to be keen on signing a forward who can play across the front three prior to the closure of the summer transfer window this evening, with the Germany U20 international looking to be a player who fits the 40-year-old’s bill.

However, it is also claimed that a move for Dajaku could hinge on whether or not Will Grigg secures a move away from Sunderland, with the 30-year-old forward being linked with a switch to Doncaster Rovers.

Louis-Dreyfus masterclass

Considering the sheer amount of potential Dajaku appears to possess, should Louis-Dreyfus go on to get a deal over the line for the Bayern Munich forward prior to Tuesday’s transfer deadline, it would very much seem to be something of a masterclass by the Black Cats chairman.

Indeed, having highly impressed in the VfB Stuttgart youth setup, scoring 23 goals and providing eight assists over 21 appearances for the U17 team, as well as 18 goals and seven assists over 39 appearances for the U19 side, Dakaju caught the attention of Bayern, who purchased the forward in a £1.35m deal back in 2019.

And, while the £1.62m-rated man has so far struggled to break into the Munich first team, predominantly playing for the German side’s second team – for whom the 20-year-old has scored seven goals and registered five assists over 43 appearances – as well as failing to make a real impression while on loan at 1.FC Union Berlin in the second half of last season – featuring just twice in the Bundesliga – both his goalscoring and creativity in youth football would nevertheless suggest the player Pascal Stoffler dubbed “a real street footballer” has the ability to play a key role in Sunderland’s push for League One promotion this season.

As such, if Louis-Dreyfus can indeed secure the signing of the £3.2k-per-week forward on Tuesday, while also shipping Grigg out to Rovers, it would be a highly impressive swoop for the chairman to complete.

India ease to six-wicket win in opener

Half-centuries from Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni outdid a superlative century from Sanath Jayasuriya in Dambulla

Half-centuries from Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni outdid a superlative century from Sanath Jayasuriya as India successfully chased the highest total in a day game in Dambulla. The pursuit never got out of hand for India, despite the early fall of Sachin Tendulkar. Once Gambhir and Raina got going, the asking-rate went above five only towards the last ten overs.India got vital contributions from three batsmen, and were disciplined in the field. Sri Lanka relied on a spectacular Jayasuriya alone for their runs, and dropped both Gambhir and Raina in the initial stages of their innings. Both the chances came in a frenetic first Powerplay of India’s innings, after Kumar Dharmasena erroneously sent Tendulkar on his way as his first umpiring victim, lbw off a ball that pitched outside leg. In the over following that dismissal, Nuwan Kulasekara came up with an athletic effort to catch a low leading edge from Gambhir off his own bowling. But after various replays Gambhir benefited from lack of sufficient evidence, although the take could well have been clean. In the next over Raina cut Thilan Thushara straight to Tillakaratne Dilshan at point and survived. Insult was added to injury in the next over, when Raina unleashed two delightful straight drives and a lofted six off Kulasekara. Two overs later, Gambhir edged Farveez Maharoof, but Mahela Jayawardene failed to hold on to a high chance. Both went on to hurt Sri Lanka – Raina was 6 when dropped, and Gambhir 11. On a slow track, in hot and humid conditions, India needed a quick start, and that’s what they provided. The chances notwithstanding, they took India to 54 in the first 10 overs. After that they settled down. Gambhir took the aggressor’s role, often stepping out to medium-pacers and looking to go over extra cover. He also showed cheek when he upper-cut a Thilan Thushara bouncer over slips. When the two fell within 11 runs of each other, Dhoni was there to guide India through to the target. He negated the threat of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis by playing them extremely late, often taking the ball virtually out of Kumar Sangakkara’s gloves and placing it. His first scoring shot was a slice from in front of stumps, guiding it past the wicketkeeper for four. The slow pitch didn’t help the spinners either. The outstanding feature of Dhoni’s knock was not the power, but the placement: two of his five boundaries came after he had ensured India would win. He nudged and patted his way to 27 singles and seven twos. True to his image, he stayed unbeaten. How Jayasuriya would have wished that somebody in the Sri Lankan batting line-up followed up on his effort, like Dhoni did after Gambhir and Raina’s dismissals. That Jayasuriya played a different game from his team-mates was evident: when he got out in the 40th over he had scored 107 in 114 balls, while the rest had managed 64 in 122 deliveries.Joy for JayasuriyaJayasuriya became the oldest man to score an ODI centuryWhen he brought up his 37th run, he also became the second man to reach the 13,000-mark in his careerHe also crossed 50 for the 95th time to go one clear of Sourav Ganguly, and in second place behind Sachin Tendulkar who has 132His knock was the second ODI century in Dambulla, and the highest individual score as wellJayasuriya’s innings came on the 212th day of his 40th year, making him the oldest centurion in ODIs. He did owe the team a big performance, however, after being implicated in the first over run-out of Dilshan. Jayasuriya responded to Dilshan’s call but stopped after taking two steps, and with Sri Lanka’s in-form batsman out of the equation, what followed was an asphyxiating opening spell by Zaheer Khan. But Jayasuriya targeted Munaf Patel from the other end. He took at least one boundary – choosing to go over covers – in the first four of Munaf’s overs, not letting the scoring stagnate. But the runs hardly came from the other end. By the time spin was introduced, in the 16th over, Sangakkara had scored 18 in 47 deliveries and Jayasuriya 38 in 41. With spin came further shackles, and the slow nature of the pitch made boundary-hitting all the more difficult. In demanding conditions, Jayasuriya showed he was supremely fit at his age – running 18 twos, six of them for Sangakakara and four of those back-to-back. He cramped up, kneeled down between deliveries to recover, but the short cut was not to be taken. He broke the ten-over boundary-less spell, hitting Pragyan Ojha onto the sightscreen, and followed it up with a pulled four off Yusuf Pathan in the next over. But he lost Sangakkara at a stage when one of the two could have gone for an all-out assault. Jayasuriya himself fell at an inopportune time, the second over of the batting Powerplay, but he had lost all his energy by then and lobbed a slower full toss to mid-off. The batting bar was lowered once again, as Zaheer and Ishant Sharma bowled superbly in the final overs. They used the change of pace to good effect, and Zaheer also managed some late swing. Mahela Jayawardene’s struggle continued, and only 82 runs were scored in the final 12 overs.

Pundit Liam Delap move to West Brom would suit all parties

Carlton Palmer reckons that West Brom signing Manchester City youngster Liam Delap is a move that would suit all parties.

The teenager, son of former long throw specialist Rory Delap, has made three first-team outings for City, but has caught the eye of most of the Championship following his exhilarating form in Premier League 2.

Delap, who netted on his senior debut in the EFL Cup for Pep Guardiola’s men, struck 24 times in 20 appearances for City’s Under-23s last term, including three hat-tricks and four braces.

And according to The Express and Star, West Brom are the latest second-tier outfit to register their interest in the 18-year-old, even though he’s currently injured and hasn’t been involved in either of City’s two competitive fixtures this season.

But with Delap desperate for regular first-team football, something that’s unlikely to happen at City, Palmer believes a switch to the Hawthorns would benefit the youngster.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Of course, because he’s a young player. And I have said young players need to play first-team football.

“So yeah, go out and play first-team football, get experience, be in the first-team dressing room – and it’s a benefit for all parties.”

Howey: Grealish will be amazing at Manchester City

Former professional footballer Steve Howey believes that Jack Grealish will be amazing at Manchester City.

Grealish completed his move from Aston Villa to Manchester City for a British record £100m, signing a six-year contract at the Etihad Stadium.

The midfielder, who Transfermarkt actually value at £58.5m, can operate either as a left-winger or attacking midfielder and scored seven goals and provided a further 12 last season for Aston Villa in all competitions. Grealish was part of Gareth Southgate’s England team at Euro 2020, where he got two assists and helped the Three Lions make the final.

After making the switch to Manchester, Grealish told City’s club media: “City are the best team in the country with a manager considered to be the best in the world – it’s a dream come true to part of this club.”

Former Blues player Steve Howey believes that Grealish will be amazing for the Cityzens, exclusively telling Football FanCast: “I think he will be amazing there. I think it was kind of done in the right way as well the transfer, I think he was always just sort of like, listen if I move on, I move on, you know we all know how he feels about Aston Villa.

“But he’s got a massive opportunity to win lots of trophies and to help Manchester City win the trophies, we all know how good he is.”

Grealish made his Villa debut against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium coming on as an 88th minute substitute, with his departure from Aston Villa was emotional as he said: “Everyone has seen the way Messi was at his final press conference. That is the exact way I felt myself. Before I left at the hotel I spoke to the team, the staff and the players and I teared up a bit myself.” [BBC Sport].

Grealish has already featured for City, as he came on as a second-half substitute in the Community Shield against Leicester City and started their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Man City: Phil Foden provides injury update

Phil Foden has provided an update on his injury situation at Manchester City, and it’s not good news for Pep Guardiola as he prepares for the start of the new Premier League season.

What’s the word?

Foden picked up a foot injury on international duty with England with summer, helping Gareth Southgate’s side to the final of the European Championship, although he was forced to sit out the game against Italy after the injury in training.

The 21-year-old has subsequently missed the entire of City’s pre-season and was absent as they lost 1-0 to Leicester City in the Community Shield last weekend.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the City academy graduate provided an update on his injury situation, saying: “It was such a shame to do it just before the Euro final. It was really unfortunate but I am working hard in the gym and hopefully, I can get back as soon as possible. I would say [it will be] around three to four weeks. Hopefully, it flies by and I can just get back on the pitch.”

A blow for Guardiola?

Foden was one of the standout performers in Guardiola’s side last season as they won the Premier League title, so it is undoubtedly a blow to have him missing when you consider that five of Man City’s first seven top-flight fixtures are against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Leicester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Last season saw the England international make 28 appearances in the Premier League, contributing nine goals and five assists, which helped him average an impressive 7.14 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Guardiola made a bold prediction about the youngster’s future at City last season, saying: “He loves to play football, he lives for that and that’s why he’s so nice to coach. And I’m pretty sure he will become an incredible legend of this club. We’re going to take care of him and the rest he will do it.”

Therefore, whilst City have a lot of squad depth, the manager will surely be worried about how his team might cope without a player of Foden’s talent given their tough start to the new Premier League season.

Watson could return against South Africa

Shane Watson could return to the Test team for Australia’s first match against South Africa as the side considers taking a four-man pace attack to the WACA. The Perth Test begins on December 17 and Australia’s captain Ricky Ponting said there was no guara

Shane Watson could return to the Test team for Australia’s first match against South Africa as the side considers taking a four-man pace attack to the WACA. The Perth Test begins on December 17 and Australia’s captain Ricky Ponting said there was no guarantee a spinner would be required at a venue where pace has dominated in first-class cricket this season.Australia took four fast men, including Shaun Tait, into the Perth Test against India last summer and the plan backfired when they lost by 72 runs. But depending on the surface they have not ruled out a similar strategy this year and Watson’s 7 for 69 in the first innings of Queensland’s Sheffield Shield match this week make him the leading contender for a spot.”[Perth] is always a fast bowler’s paradise, particularly if we get to play on one of the relaid wickets that they have been playing all the Shield games on,” Ponting said after Australia wrapped up an innings victory over New Zealand in Adelaide. “We got duped a bit there last year with the game over there.”We heard so much about the WACA being back to its fast and bouncy best and they played us on one of the ones that had not been relaid and we went in with four fast bowlers, so that brought us undone. There would have to be some sort of consideration to playing those guys again, maybe even a line-up similar to Brisbane.”The final makeup of the team will depend on the pitch that is prepared and Ponting said if a change was made an allrounder like Watson would have the edge over a specialist fast bowler. Should a spinner be required Jason Krejza will be handed the opportunity if he is fit, after missing the Adelaide Test due to an ankle injury. But Ponting said regardless of whether Watson played, the position of Andrew Symonds was not in doubt. Symonds has had a slow return to the Test team after not being considered for the India tour, although he was unfortunate to be given out caught behind in Australia’s only innings in Adelaide when the ball appeared to miss the bat.”Symo’s not had a bad game,” Ponting said. “He’s got a decision that probably could have gone either way here and all of a sudden everyone’s asking questions about him. I’m not really sure why that is.”We all back Andrew Symonds’ cricket ability. He’s probably been our most consistent batsmen over the last couple of series anyway at No. 6. In a contest against the next best team in the world I’m pretty happy to have him in the side.”
