Sthalekar aims for more success

Lisa Sthalekar will appear in her 13th consecutive Women’s National Cricket League final when New South Wales chase their fifth consecutive title

Cricinfo staff27-Jan-2010Lisa Sthalekar will appear in her 13th consecutive Women’s National Cricket League final when New South Wales chase their fifth consecutive title against Victoria at the MCG on Saturday. Sthalekar is the most capped player in the history of the competition and will be a key figure as the Breakers attempt to hit back from their 52-run defeat in the Twenty20 decider in Adelaide last weekend.”We didn’t play to our potential in the final and were outplayed by Victoria,” the coach Richard Bates said. “By Saturday we’ll have had seven days to turn things around and we’ll make sure that we are up for another tough match. We have a very strong team who have been playing some very good cricket over the last month. The players have a lot of faith in each other and are confident heading into this match.”Victoria have retained the 12 that secured top spot on the ladder after the regular rounds. The Spirit are looking for two trophies in a week, but they have not won the 50-over competition since 2004-05. However, the win last Saturday took them to three victories in four matches against New South Wales this summer.”We already had a lot of belief, but winning the Twenty20 final reinforced it – it proves to the girls what they’re capable of,” Victoria’s coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick said. “We’ve got a balanced bowling attack, a strong batting line-up and the best thing is that everyone contributes and chips in when they need to.”New South Wales squad Lisa Sthalekar (capt), Alex Blackwell, Sarah Aley, Sarah Andrews, Kate Blackwell, Sarah Coyte, Alyssa Healy, Sharon Millanta, Erin Osborne, Ellyse Perry, Leah Poulton, Angela Reakes.Victoria squad Rachael Haynes (capt), Emma Inglis, Kelly Applebee, Kristen Beams, Briana Binch, Jess Cameron, Sarah Elliott, Naomi Fullwood, Julie Hunter, Renee Melton, Clea Smith, Elyse Villani.

Sunderland fans slam O’Brien

Taking to Twitter, these Sunderland fans slammed the performance of attacker Aiden O’Brien as their side dropped vital points away to Shrewsbury Town.

Lee Johnson’s men travelled to Montgomery Waters Meadow in search of a victory as Sunderland aim to continue their chase for promotion and finally climb out of England’s third tier.

The Black Cats got off to a fine start mid-way through the first period when Alex Pritchard opened the scoring and originally put Sunderland in cruise control of the contest.

However, as the contest progressed, Sunderland failed to put the result beyond all doubt and Shrewsbury came back into it – with attacker Daniel Udoh netting a 64th minute equaliser.

Sunderland fans slam O’Brien…

Sunderland went on to drop points in their quest for promotion as supporters unleashed on social media, with some taking aim at O’Brien during the contest.

According to SofaScore, the 28-year-old ranked in as their lowest rated player on the night (6.3) whilst taking the least touches out of any outfield player – leaving little wonder some supporters thought he was ‘anonymous’.

The forward also completed just one out of four dribble attempts, managing zero shots on target and winning just 1/6 ground duels (SofaScore).

Here’s how supporters reacted to his display on Twitter:

“I’d have Bailey Wright at 7, Gooch 5, Broadhead 5 and O’Brien 4. Otherwise we would have beaten 10 men surely!! Gooch tried but other than that left foot effort saved by the keeper nothing came off, Broadhead and O’Brien completely anonymous. Subs terrible.”

Shoaib Akhtar six-for seals Leopards win

A combined batting effort and a six-wicket haul from Shoaib Akhtar sealed Federal Areas Leopards’ second successive win in the Pentangular One-day Cup

Cricinfo staff21-Apr-2010
ScorecardA combined batting effort and a six-wicket haul from Shoaib Akhtar sealed Federal Areas Leopards’ second successive win in the Pentangular One-day Cup, as they beat Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Panthers by 77 runs at the National Stadium in Karachi. After opting to bat, the Leopards were boosted by half-centuries from four of their batsmen. Opener Rahil Majeed and Umar Amin scored at a brisk pace in a 65-run second wicket stand, Yasim Murtaza scored a quick 55-ball 63 including six fours and a six and wicketkeeper Naeem Anjum provided the late flourish, finishing with an unbeaten 53 off 36 balls to lift the Leopards score to 305. Left-arm spinner Zohaib Khan was the pick of the Panthers bowlers, taking 3 for 46.In reply, none of the Panthers batsmen managed a score of 50 or above as Shoaib crippled them with early strikes, and returned to finish off their innings and seal a thumping win for the Leopards. He dismissed openers Imran Nazir and Rafatullah Mohmand cheaply, broke a 46-run sixth wicket stand by getting rid of wicketkeeper Ahmed said and nipped out two of the tail-enders to end with 6 for 52.

Johnson must start SAFC’s Broadhead

Sunderland are back in action on Wednesday evening with a clash against League Two club Oldham Athletic in the Papa John’s Trophy.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players Sunderland manager Lee Johnson could pick to take on Oldham, one individual that started their previous league game against Cambridge United at the weekend that should be in the team once again on this occasion is Nathan Broadhead.

Given the worrying number of defensive injuries Sunderland have at the moment, it’s safe to say that Johnson will have some thinking to do about who he plays at the back in midweek.

However, with Broadhead managing to grab a goal against Cambridge, Johnson should have no doubts about including him in the team to face Oldham, leaving one less issue for him to worry about.

In the clash last weekend, as well as scoring Sunderland’s second goal of the game, Broadhead managed to make himself a real nuisance for Cambridge by having a total of three shots at goal, making two key passes and proving himself as a useful defensive figure by making one clearance and two tackles as well.

This performance earned the on-loan attacker an overall match rating of 7.1/10, making him their second-highest rated player on the day according to SofaScore.

Since joining the Wearside club on a season-long loan deal from Premier League club Everton, the 23-year-old, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £2.9k-per-week has made 11 appearances for the Black Cats across all competitions, trying his hand at different attacking positions in the process.

Even though Ross Stewart managed to earn a higher match rating (7.4/10) than Broadhead at the weekend, the fact that Oldham are in League Two could persuade Johnson to give Stewart a rest ahead of their next league game against Oxford United. That would allow Broadhead to prove himself once again in a game where he could terrify the opposition with his offensive abilities.

The Everton youngster’s clear talents across the pitch in an attacking and defensive sense could make him a terrifying prospect for Oldham’s players to come up against if he’s in the right mood.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for the 25-year-old but any team preparing to make a bid will have to start off high. Sporting coach Ruben Amorim said in January that the Primeira Liga side would not sell him unless his €100 million (£86m/$108m) release clause were triggered.

Gyokeres represented Brighton and Coventry before joining Sporting last summer. He has been in insatiable form ever since, scoring a whopping 31 goals in 31 games in all competitions for the Portuguese giants.

Singapore win, USA stumble in Kuala Lumpur

Round-up of the ICC World Cricket League Division Four matches in Kuala Lumpur

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Sep-2012Singapore registered a comprehensive 112-run win over Malaysia, thanks to Christopher Janik’s 106 and Munish Arora’s half-century that took them to 230 for nine in their innings. Janik, who struck eight boundaries and two sixes, and Arora put on 138 runs for the fifth wicket, the defining and the only productive stand of the innings. Their first four wickets fell for 35 runs, and the last five collapsed for 29; the fifth wicket stand and a couple of other small partnerships took them past the 200-run mark.Malaysia too stumbled in their innings, except that there wasn’t any batsman to stage a recovery. They slipped to 14 for four and a partnership of 25 which followed proved to be their highest one, the chase of 231 looking beyond them. At 91 for 8 in 29 overs, Singapore’s victory was confirmed as the players walked off due to rain. The major damage was done by fast bowler Pramodh Raja, who took three wickets.Tanzania suffered a similar collapse to be bowled out for 82 and lost to Nepal by eight wickets in a match that spanned only 51.2 overs. Issa Kikasi’s 33 was the only score of note, as wickets kept falling regularly, courtesy seamer Paras Khadka and Basanta Regmi, who shared seven wickets between them. Tanzania were in danger of being bowled out for a far lower total as they were reduced to 19 for 5, but Kikasi and Benson Mwita briefly led a recovery.Nepal reached their target in the 20th over with Gyanendra Malla and Subash Khakurel scoring 28 and 20 respectively.Fast bowler Aftab Ahmed’s initial strikes were followed by offspinner Bashir Shah’s three wickets to help Denmark restrict USA to 86 for five, giving them victory by 56 runs (D/L) in a rain-shortened match. After having raced to 40 for no loss in the fifth over, they fell to 71 for 5 in the 20th over, as the Denmark bowlers bowled economically. Michael Pedersen, especially, kept a tight leash on the USA batsmen, giving away nine runs in his five overs.Denmark’s innings revolved around fifties by No.3 Andreas Lambert and Pedersen. The innings started slowly, and after being reduced to 57 for 3 in the 18th over, Lambert and Freddie Klokker, who scored 39, put on 65 runs in even time. A couple of wickets fell in the 38th over to leave them in a tricky position at 167 for seven, but Pedersen and Bashir added 60 in less than nine overs to take them close to the 250-run mark.

Celtic: Hoops eye Albert Gudmundsson

Celtic are keen on AZ Alkmaar’s Albert Gudmundsson, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf (via FC Update).

The lowdown

Gudmundsson is out of contract at the end of the 2021/22 season, and so as of Saturday, the Hoops could approach him about joining on a free transfer next summer.

Discussions over an extension have gone ‘quiet’ for a ‘while’ now, he says, and while he hasn’t ‘locked the door’ on staying put, he doesn’t know if negotiations will reopen.

He’s been at AZ since 2018, when he arrived from fellow Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven.

The Iceland international has started 12 of his side’s 18 league games so far this season, as well as five of their six Europa Conference League matches. Overall, he’s contributed six goals and two assists (via Transfermarkt).

Gudmundsson has been capped 29 times by his country and was part of the squad that went to the 2018 World Cup.

The latest

The report reaffirms previous claims in the British press that both Celtic and their arch-rivals Rangers view Gudmundsson as an ‘ideal’ addition.

That’s largely because of his versatility, with the 24-year-old capable of playing as a no. 10, a striker and a winger.

As his comments about his contract situation suggest, Gudmunsson is considering leaving AZ.

The verdict

Celtic need to improve their strength in depth. Ange Postecoglou has said as much when discussing the club’s injury pile-up.

Gudmundsson would be especially useful in that regard because of his capacity to play in multiple positions.

And he boasts a decent record too, with 29 direct goal contributions (17 goals, 12 assists) in 81 appearances in the Eredivisie – the seventh-strongest league in Europe.

There could be a scenario here where both Glasgow clubs make overtures in January, trying to convince him that their project is the more attractive – perhaps the prospect of linking up as a duo with Kyogo Furuhashi could tempt him to Parkhead?

In other news, Celtic have been backed to complete this triple swoop.

Guardiola believes Man City will win title againConceded eight goals in last three league gamesPhillips could play a part against Aston VillaWHAT HAPPENED?

The Catalan manager feels his side are still capable of winning the Premier League title for a fourth consecutive season despite a host of defensive errors in their last few league matches. The reigning champions dropped points in their last three outings in the Premier League against Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, conceding a total of eight goals. They were held to 3-3 draw by Ange Postecoglou's swashbuckling Spurs side on Sunday as the Cityzens squandered the lead twice in the match.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference, Guardiola said: "If you ask me today, my feeling is that we're going to win the Premier League. If we play at the levels that we showed against Liverpool and Tottenham, we're going to do it again – knowing that it is not easy of course."

The manager also hinted that out-of-favour midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is being linked with a move away from the club in January, could play a part in their upcoming league clash against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

On the midfielder's chance of playing the match, the former Barcelona coach said: "There's a chance [for Kalvin Phillips to play against Villa]. Today, I have to see training in the afternoon and see how the players are and feel. The decision will be made tomorrow."

15 fun facts about Allan Saint-Maximin

Everything you need to know about Newcastle United maverick Allan Saint-Maximin!

Allan Saint-Maximin is a French professional footballer who currently plays as a winger for Newcastle United in the Premier League. He was born on March 12, 1997, in Châtenay-Malabry, France.

Saint-Maximin began his football career at the age of six with local club Les Ulis. He then joined the youth ranks at Saint-Etienne in 2013, where he developed his skills and caught the attention of scouts from across Europe. After making just one first-team appearance for the French outfit, he was snapped up by Monaco in 2015.

However, they loaned him out immediately to gain regular first-team football, first to Hannover 96 for whom he featured in 18 games, scoring once, in a relegation campaign. Then on to then-Ligue 1 outfit SC Bastia, where he made 36 appearances and scored three times but they were relegated anyway.

He returned to Monaco, who had just won the league title, so regular minutes were difficult to come by, and he only played two games before being sold to OGC Nice.

Here he played under Lucien Favre for a season, and then Patrick Vieira, finishing seventh and eighth.

His speed and direct play attracted Newcastle, and they bought him for a reported fee of £16.5m in August 2019.

The 26-year-old has made a strong impression at St. James' Park, quickly becoming a fan favourite thanks to his fearless dribbling and natural flair. He went on to make 26 appearances in his debut season, scoring three goals and providing four assists.

Since then, he continued to be a key player for the club, helping the Magpies stave off relegation in the last two seasons before playing a vital role in their climb up the table in recent times as Eddie Howe's men recently reached their first cup final in 22 years and remain in contention for a place in the Champions League this season.

What are the 15 things you absolutely need to know about the Newcastle trickster?

Street football running in his veins!

Neither of Saint-Maximin's parents were involved in the game. He was raised in a reasonably affluent family, and didn't have financial troubles in his formative years. His mother was the director of education at a renowned school in the Paris outskirts. Meanwhile, his father worked as an office administrator at Paris Diderot University.

Athletics arrived first among all sporting alternatives for the youngster, thanks to his innate passion for running and explosive activities. Later, he transferred his athletic abilities to football and started playing alongside his elder brother, Kurtys, who at the time aspired to be a footballer.

He used to play with boys his brother's age, and developed a reputation in street football.

The largely uncoached freestyler was luckily offered trials with Verrieres-le-Buisson, from where his professional journey began.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesFriends with Hatem Ben Arfa 🤝

It’s easy to see the similarities between Saint-Maximin and Hatem Ben Arfa. They’re both French, terrific dribblers, a nightmare for defenders and fan favourites at St James’ Park.

When Ben Arfa was at his best, he was unstoppable. His time in the North-East ended on a sour note, but Newcastle streets will never forget him, or his spectacular solo goals.

Indeed, the French duo happen to be friends. What's more, before joining Newcastle, Saint-Maximin rang his compatriot for advice.

“I remember Hatem Ben Arfa played here,” he told the Telegraph. “He told me to sign. He is a good friend, we grew up in the same area. He had some of his best days at Newcastle and wished he had stayed longer."

Saint-Maximin has acknowledged Ben Arfa is a player he looks up to for the latter's dribbling ability.

“For dribbling, I love Hatem so much,” said Saint-Maximin. “I love a lot of players, but, for me, it’s Ben Arfa. He scored a lot of good goals.

"He had an injury one time, and maybe this was a bit difficult for him, but everybody knows he’s a great player.”

Could've signed for Arsenal 🖋️

What if we told you that Saint-Maximin could easily have been plying his trade for Arsenal had things turned out differently for him in the past?

The Gunners have been one of the most consistent suitors of the Frenchman, who grew up idolising Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. However, for his development, regular gametime was of paramount importance, as he turned down interest from the north London club not once, but twice.

First was when he left Monaco to join Nice. There were also reports in the media that Saint-Maximin had been a transfer target for Arsenal during the summer of 2019. However, the French winger ultimately opted to sign for Newcastle, who were ready to give him a prominent role in their project moving forwards.

He's absolutely loving life in the North-East, and is well-adored by a passionate set of supporters, with the club back on the rise since the Saudi-led takeover.

Gives back to Newcastle community

From his appearance and fashion focus, one may assume he's a flashy and egoist personality, but you'd be wrong. Saint-Maximin is a smart and humble guy who knows what he's doing, which is putting others before himself.

He arrived at Tyneside with reports stating he's a spectacular talent, but with a bad attitude. However, the Magpies faithful have discovered it to be otherwise.

His parents and teachers instilled in him all of the principles of generosity he needed to stay grounded despite his riches. From being a regular contributor of the NUFC Foodbank to making significant donations during COVID-19 to taking 100s of young Newcastle fans to a toy shop and buying them a toy of their wish, he gives a lot back to the Newcastle community.

Needless to say, he shares a special relationship with Toon faithful, and is hero-worshipped by many of them.

Torres, Suarez & January transfer deadline day deals

Goal takes a look at the most memorable Premier League deals that were finalised on January transfer deadline day over the years

GettyFernando Torres | Chelsea | £50m

Fernando Torres’ £35 million deadline day transfer to Chelsea from Liverpool was a then-British transfer record. ‘El Nino’, a former Kop darling, infamously left the Reds to join Chelsea in 2011 in search for silverware and success amid a period of deep turbulence for the Anfield side.

While he had endeared himself to the Merseyside faithful with 81 goals, forming a prolific partnership with Steven Gerrard and earning a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most feared strikers, he was considered a flop at Stamford Bridge.

He scored his first Chelsea goal against West Ham on April 23, 2011 after a 903-minute goal-less run, though he did lift the Champions League trophy with the Blues in 2012.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLuis Suarez | Liverpool | £23m

The Uruguayan international’s time at Anfield was marred with controversy, but he will be best remember for his scoring prowess and lethal attacking skill with the Reds. Luis Suarez was initially brought to Liverpool to Ajax in a view to partner Torres in attack, and scored on his debut against Stoke in February 2011.

He scored just four Premier League goals in his first half-season for Liverpool but became his side’s most valuable asset over the next few years, steadily increasing his league tally to 11 goals in 2011-12, 23 goals in 2012-13 and 31 goals in 2013-14.

He played a key role in Liverpool’s 2014 title push under Brendan Rodgers, and left for Barcelona later that summer.

GettyAndy Carroll | Liverpool | £35m

If there’s anybody who embodies the idea of a ‘panic buy’, it’s Andy Carroll. Liverpool acted swiftly to purchase the forward from Newcastle as a replacement for the outgoing Torres in January 2011, with Carroll’s club-record £35m signing confirmed on deadline day.

Carroll endured a challenging time at Liverpool, struggling to fill in for Torres. He managed to score just 11 goals in his two seasons for the Reds before leaving for West Ham in 2012.

Getty ImagesPierre-Emerick Aubameyang | Arsenal | £56m

The Gunners had their eye on Gabon star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a while, but his move was only confirmed on deadline day 2018 – as Arsenal, along with Chelsea and Dortmund, were involved in a player merry-go-round. Arsenal wanted Aubameyang, but Dortmund couldn’t sell the player without having a replacement, who they identified in Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi. The Blues, in turn, wanted to bring in Olivier Giroud from the Emirates, which rounded out the transfer triangle stand-off.

All three clubs finally confirmed all three deals on January 31 – Aubameyang to Arsenal, Batshuyai replacing him at Dortmund, and Giroud signing for Chelsea from Arsenal.
